Tomorrow I plan to lay out 42k for a used 05 Saleen 281 SC Silver in Color, 1750 miles, upgraded wheels,14"brakes and HID light, oh and it's an automatic.
Why shouldn't I buy this car? I'm located in NH, and because of this these car are very limited up here and to beable to actually view one is a hard thing to do. My first time.
One other question? What can I expect for a 0-60 time and 1/4 mile time.
Regards,
Jeff

I believe the '05s will do 0 to 60 in just under 5 seconds and the quarter mile at about 13 seconds. The '05s have 400hp, which can easily be upgraded to 475hp by a Saleen dealership for about $1k. I would highly recommend the upgrade as the difference is night and day in how the car pulls off the line, also, the upgrade will give your a safer tune.
As for why you shouldn't buy the car, I can see no reason not to. It is a low-mileage car and you should still have over a year left on the factory warranties. I would have an independent mechanic check it out first. Also, I think $43k is the high retail value for the car, and I have seen EBay auctions for low mileage Saleens end at or below $42k for S281 SCs. So depending on how badly you want it, I would try to negotiate something around $38k-39k.
Thanks for your input, but why do you say the hp upgrade is safer? Isn't it safe way it is? 42k is on the high side, but to go were the 38-40 would be would involve some travel, but again I appreciate your input.

Saleen will say the tune for its ’05 and ’06 cars is safe and point to the fact that no customers have reported a blown engine. Those who have put their '05-'06 SC Saleens on a dyno have seen the air/fuel ratios vary greatly between about 11.0 to over 13.0 in many instances. Although my stock ’06 SC engine (before the 475hp upgrade) never went above 12.5, if I recall correctly.
I raised this issue some time ago in the following thread: http://www.mustangforums.com/m_2263602/tm.htm
I have been told that 11.8 to 12.0 is the optimal a/f ratio for a supercharged engine and that anything higher than 13.5 may be too lean and put you in danger of a blown engine. If you're never really getting on your carat wide open throttle (WOT), this may all be academic. But after you've had your S281 SC for a few days, you'll want to be driving at WOT fairly often.
The stock tune is just fine in my opinion, I had my on a dyno and only saw 11.8 on my 2006 S281 SCat 6,000 RPMs. The tune is safe although the 475Hp upgrade kit is a nice added bonus if you want to unleash more potential from the engine, however I recommend waiting until you have her properly broken inat 5000 milesor so and the warranty is up. Just my thoughts on the issue. I have the 475 Hp upgrade kit awaiting installation once my warrantly is up.
Regarding the safety of the tune... not all Saleen tunes are created equal. Put it on a dyno after you purchase it. If it is running lean get the hp upgrade kit (well ok do this anyway!), install it, and dyno it again.

Nitehawk, you are lucky. My stock AF ratio was 13.9 when we shut it down at 5900 rpms. It went over 14 with the 475. Mr. Bomb is correct, not all tunes are created equal from Saleen. As long as the car is not modified itsSaleen's problem if the af causes issues,so buy the car if the deal is good. When the warranty is up get it custom tuned and enjoy it for 25+ years. These cars are fantastic!!!!
That actually sounds like a nice deal for a clean car with under 2k miles. Bumper number 900 looks cool too! That would actually be two Jeff's with silver supercharged cars on here.
Anyway, the only thing I can think of that is a small negative is the auto. There are plenty of people out there that would like the auto. I personally would rather shift that beast myself but.....
good luck with it. and bring your trailer. Is it not still snowing there?
Automatic is getting a series respect boost out of all of us at Saleen since we started dealing with JDM. FYI, all of their drag cars are automatic and they are no joke (plus all of us with daily driver sticks are getting sore feet and feel like we are burning our clutches in everyday traffic).
