How to upload a tune file into your XCal2

This tutorial was written for the ‘First Timer’ dealing with Tunes that were e-mailed to them or received them on a CD and have no clue on how to upload them into their SCT XCal2 handheld tuner.

Note: Before you get started, be aware that you cannot download any of your existing tunes from the XCal2 handheld to your PC. Only your SCT Dealer (Tuner) can provide you with back-up copies of the tunes that you purchased.

From your CD or e-mail, download your tune(s) into your PC (remember the location where you download them).

Install the SCT Live Load 3 and the SCT Windows Drivers from the supplied CD. If you don’t have one, you can download the latest versions from the SCT website.  Current version is 1.3.1 as of April 26, 2007.

Plug in your XCal2 into an open USB port using the supplied cable (or if your printer/scanner utililizes a USB connection, unplug the USB cable from it, then plug it into the XCal2).

Once plugged in (for the first time), you’ll see ‘Found New Hardware’ message appear in the lower right taskbar and the XCal2 window will display the Main Menu.

Click open the Live Load program icon on your desktop. You’ll see a pop up window telling you to make sure the Main Menu is displayed in the XCal2. Click ‘OK’.

This is the main screen of Live Load. On top, it’ll display the 3 tunes (under File Position) you currently have stored in the 3 banks of the XCal2.

In Step 1 of the window, click the ‘Browse’ button and go to the location where you saved your tunes. From my example shown, I have selected TJF1BillS91raceK_N.ll3. Click on the file you wish to upload then click ‘Open’.

Choose which File Position you want the new tune installed. It will replace whatever tune is currently in that bank. In my example, I chose File Position 1.
NOTE: After completing the load for (in my example) Position 1 and you want to load a second or third file, you must move the black dot to Position 2 or 3.

Rename your Description for that File Position (15 characters max). I chose to name mine ’91 Race K&N’.

Once renamed, click on the ‘Add File’ button in Step 3. Now, just sit back and relax and let the computer do its thing. You can view the upload progress in the vertical bar on the right.

Below are some screenshots on the XCal2 as it erases the current file position and uploads the new tune file in its place.

When the upload is complete, the Live Load window will display ‘Programming was successful!!!’ and the XCal2 screen will go back to the Main Menu.

 All that’s left is to unplug the USB cable from your XCal2 and close the Live Load program.   Note:  I am currently running Version 1.1.6 of Live Load. If you have downloaded (or currently running) a newer version, the screen titled "Main Menu" no longer appears with the newer versions of Live Load.

When uploading tunes to your Xcal2, ignore the warning "Make sure it says Main Menu, then press ok.," but be sure "Program Vehicle" is highlighted before proceeding.

This info was found on sctflash.com forums.
  Now that the tunes have been uploaded into your Xcal2, let's go out to the car.   I know a few of you out there wants to know where you plug it into, how to download a tune file, and what's all involved. Wonder no more! Note:  It's suggested in the SCT instructions that you should pull the fan and fuel pump fuses prior to re-flashing the PCM.  It's a precaution against a weak battery causing the PCM to become corrupted during the re-flash process.  The fuel pump and electric fans run constantly on some Ford models (not the Mustang) while the PCM is being flashed, which on some models can take as long as several minutes.  Unless you have a suspicion that you're battery is weak, there's no need to pull these fuses.  An alternative is to hook up a battery charger and set it to it's lowest setting during the programming.
Upload time of factory tune: 2 minutes (approx)
Download time of new tune: 1 minute

LOCATION OF OBD-II PORT (UNDER DASH, ABOVE CLUTCH)
NOTE: XCAL2 PLUG IS KEYED, ONLY FITS INTO PORT ONE WAY

KEY OFF
WHEN FIRST PLUGGED IN, HANDHELD UNIT WILL BEEP TO INITIALIZE.
THIS IS THE MAIN INTRO SCREEN YOU WILL SEE.

USE THE DOWN ARROW TO GO TO THE NEXT SCREEN (PROGRAM VEHICLE)

CHOOSE FILE YOU WISH TO UPLOAD (IN MY CASE, 91 TORQUE)

KEY TO ON POSITION (DO NOT START)

NEXT SCREEN, 'OPTION PARAMETERS'
I CHOSE 'NO' (CANCEL).  I ONLY WANTED TO DOWNLOAD THE TUNE.

READY TO PROGRAM
1ST STEP WILL BE TO UPLOAD THE FACTORY TUNE INTO THE HANDHELD.

UPLOAD OF FACTORY TUNE COMPLETE
VERIFICATION AND PREP FOR NEW TUNE DOWNLOAD

DOWNLOAD AUTOMATICALLY INITIATED

DOWNLOAD COMPLETE
AFTER PRESSING 'SELECT', UNIT WILL PROMPT YOU TO TURN KEY OFF.

LASTLY, SCREEN WILL RETURN TO MAIN MENU.

  Real Time video of tune download    VERY IMPORTANT!!! If after you install any SCT Tune, and you need to take your car into the dealer, follow the instructions below on how to retreive your Strategy Code first.  There have been situations that even when you returned the vehicle to stock (program) and went to the Dealer, they would sometimes reflash or update your calibration.  Then, when you got home and reloaded the custom tune into your vehicle, it wouldn't start!!  To make things worse, if you tried to return the vehicle to stock it won't start either!!

Explaination....

When the dealer updated their computer it then changed the Calibration Code inside the PCM. Unlike 04 and earlier models the X-calibrator didn't see this as a new vehicle and simply deleted the tune that the dealer installed and wrote the old program on the PCM. This old tune doesn't have the same settings and this causes the car not to start, to put it in simple terms.

Now for the bad part, being that it deleted the tune file that the dealer has installed it wont start. Returning the vehicle to stock doesn't work either because all you are doing is returning it to the factory program from the intial tune.

In other words, the dealer would have to reflash the new code into the PCM again.

Prevention.....

The first thing you need to do when you get your X-calibrator is to go to " Read DTC menu" and then scroll down to "Read Strategy" and read this information from your car. Then write this down somewhere secure, like inside the X-calibrator box.

Then, if you have to take your car in for service, first check your strategy by doing the above after returning it to stock. Take it in for service and when you get the car back, BEFORE uploading a tune, read the strategy again and compare it to the one you had before taking it in for service.

If they match, then simply install the tune and drive away happy.

If they do not match, then DO NOT install the tune, but rather contact your SCT dealer and give them the new Strategy code and get some new tunes for your new code.

Below are a few Strategy codes and the Calibration codes for which they stand for.....

Strategy = Calibration

06'S

FBNF1G3 = TJF1 = This code updates to= FBNF1GA = TSG0 ** Updated 2/7**

FBNE0G5 = GYX1

FBLF152 = VDX1 = This code updates to = FBLF1G2 = SRV0 **Updated 12/06*

FBLE0G3 = FTV1

07'S

FOAF054 = TZZ2

FPAF053 = TNJ2

FOAF0A4 = KHK2

FPAF0A3 = XZE2

Nothing has been updated for 07' yet....

The above codes apply to all GT's,  if you have a V6, contact your tuner.

NOTE:  If your X-calibrator will not read your strategy on your 05-up Ford, then your version of the operating system or Firmware on the device may be out of date.  You can update the firmware by going to www.sctflash.com/downloads.php and downloading LiveUpdate 2 (the newest version of the firmware, V.2.2.0 as of April 26, 2007).

NOTE:  If you haven't updated your Live Load 3 version to the latest V.1.3.1 (as of April 26, 2007), then you may want to do this or your new tune files may say "Invalid LiveLoad file".  Go to the same link as noted above to fix this.

Bill,

What does this mean?:

" FBLF152 = VDX1 = This code updates to = FBLF1G2 = SRV0 **Updated 12/06* "

My catchcode is VDX1.  Does this mean the dealer may have reflashed to SRV0 if my car's been to the dealer since 12/06?  I just ordered by CAI and X2 from B a m achimps and I want to be sure I'm ok.  I listed my catch code as VDX1 when I ordered.

Your Dealer may have updated the Calibration Code.  Really depends on what reason you took it in.  For example, for an oil change, I doubt it.

Best bet is to check the code when you get your Xcal2.  Do this before downloading any tune into your car.

Got me there... Personally, I'd rather not mess with any of those adjustments.  That's what I pay Doug for.

Because of you I have learned so many things about upgrades.  Now there are some things I have to tell my husband to do and he's been working on cars since he was 13!    Not that I really know what I'm doing now, but at least I have an idea.  Still waiting on getting my CAI & tuner.  That's the part I was worried about because my husband has never dealt with a tuner, & I don't really know any place to take it.  (& the whole money issue)  Thanks again for all your great write ups!
