ORIGINAL: andykbob Hey, I seem to have a problem starting my 351 when its warm. It turns over fine when it's cold, but when it's hot, it barely turns over and sometime it just won't turn it over. I had the battery checked and was told it was fine. The batterey, voltage regulator and alternator are new. I was told that my timing could be too advanced so I backed it off. It seemed to work for a day but then it did it again. Any thoughts? [/quote Start all over guys. andykbob said the engine will not turn over when hot. Not fuel, not coil - starter. Jim]

go to autozone with the engine hot and have them test the starter on the car that will answer the question of the hot starter, which I would bet is the problem.

i had the same problem with my 351w it turned out to be the ground wire from the block was too small. i added another ground wire (4ga) from the ear of the starter straight to the neg terminal on the battery. no more problem.

What carb and intake are you using? If it is an edelbrock/carter carb on a no air gap intake, it is usually vapor lock. This can be fixed with a heat insulator gasket. A one inch is usually not necessary, and will effect where you engine liks to run(usually at higher rpm since the velocity is higher entering the runners).

OK Lets see. The Alternator and Battery are nre No there is no Spacer under the carb The Carb is a Holly 750 No Idea about the compression thing The New coil is the actuall measuring 2.5 volts now. I think I should test is with a different meter. I think thats it

How does it turn over when its hot ? If it sounds normal, the starter is fine, it could be pulling high amps, but it is doing the job of turning the engine over, the problem is something else. With that said, it can still be electrical When wiring or electrical components like a coil or condenser get hot, the wiring has a higher resistance to the free flow of current. But it this were the case, you should be having some performance problems when the engine gets hot while driving, like stalling, or just quiting without warning. How long have you had this problem? You can test for vapor lock with the help of a friend, get a squeez bottle and put some gas in it. Remove the air cleaner and have someone turn the engine over, and squirt some gas down the carb...if it fires up, you have vapor lock. If it dosnt, you have either a distributor or ignition problem.
