Overhead cam, maybe i need more understanding on engines, did engines in the 60's and 70's come with overhead cams, maybe i need to spend more time on mustangs and less on trying to get my god dam crx to work.
Modular means that the same parts from different engines are the same, the 4.6,5.4,and the 6.8 V-10 are all part of the Ford modular engine family. The 6.8 is just a 5.4 with 2 more cylinders added, the rods, pistons, valve train, and front and rear of the block are the same. Also many parts from the 4.6 and the 5.4 are the same.

but the f**king ford ones are
i shouldnt have assumed that people knew i meant that...
and whys everyone jumping my ass on this almost 2 week old thread? i was just trying to help someone with a very basic explanation and then it gets more attention two weeks later when someone jumps my ass. i dont see either of you nitpickers trying to explain it

ya very basically. im not even claiming that that's 100% right, but he just basically wanted to know what modular was, not every last anal detail of the differences
The concept of modularity allows the engine designs to share commonization between concepts and engine hardware. The four modules are: *intake module *cylinder head (RH) module *cylinder head (LH) module *Lower engine module
The modular engine concept supports efficiencies during repairs by allowing the removal and installation of these modules. While not all in vehicle repairs can take advantage of the modular concept, most out-of-vehicle repairs benefit in reduction of time and labor needed to repair the engine
In addition to this, the 4.6, 5.4, and 6.8 are very similar engines because they are all "modular" with each other. The 4.6 and 5.4 share many of the same parts, much closer than the 5.0 was with the 5.8, and also the 5.4 modular engine is identical to the 6.8 if you added 2 more identical cylinders. So, there you have it guys, the true meaning of modular.
(P.S. I didn't sh!t this outta my head, I actually had to look most of this up)

cool, thanks for 1. not making fun of me 2. actually saying what it means instead of bitching at those who generalized what it was.
once again i gotta clarify, when he asked what modular meant i was just saying basically enough a modular is the overhead cam ones, though i neglected to say basically ford only

I was just stating that over hard cam does not mean it is modular. If some one read your first post they may leave here thinking all over head cam motors are modular.
