To start off, I am not a forum person so I probably am not doing something right.  But due to the incident that happened to me this past Monday on my way to work, I had to register to settle this ongoing battle I hear about with the mustang vs. the 350 z.  I am not up to date on the 350's too much, so I am not sure if it was a track, a touring, or whatever else they offer, but on my way to work that day, I sat at the first redlight around the corner from my house, and damned if a 350 z didn't pull up beside me and rev up the engine.  I am not scared of any car within the same category as my gt, so I let him hear the good ole' 40 series open up a bit.  It was obvious we were gonna race.  I brought the car up to about 1750 and waited patiently for the green light.  At launch, I broke traction for maybe 10-15 feet, but wasn't lighting them up and was still pulling hard.  I had about a 1/2 car on him as I shifted into 2nd.  Then, I got approximately 1 car on him and thats how we finished that race until we were forced to let up.  Thats not it, it just so happened that this guy had to get on I-4 and go the same direction as me, so we played all the way to my exit for work. It just didn't impress me that much considering they are more expensive than the gt. .  I just hope there is someone out there thats as happy as I am about burrying the hatchet on this battle.  If anyone has encountered this matchup before, I wanna hear about it!!!   Thanks for reading!

Great story, thanks for the info.  I think the new Z cars are pretty neat looking, especially on the inside.  Glad you waxed him :)

they're handling cars, that just happen to be decently fast.  Could it have been an automatic?

Not sure if he was stock, sounded as if he had exhaust, and possibly had headers, but thats a guess.  My friend here at work has headers on his z, and it sounded identical to his.  Just guessing though, my car is fairly loud too, causing it to be difficult to hear.  Hopefully, he hasnt put too much into the car considering the finish by him.  I agree that they are awesome looking inside and out, but I believe people may have expected a little more juice out of them stock.

Oh, and yes he was shifting gears with me, so he was manual. I searched the net for some numbers and most are showing  the 03 gt to be .1 sec faster to 60mph, and also .1 sec faster in the quarter and that sounds about right, I may have had him by a bit more than that because I luckily launched it out of the hole perfect without smoking them completely.

All Zs and G35 Coupes sound like they have exhaust work.. it's just the way they sound.

Yeah, thats very true.  Kinda makes it hard to tell.  So, is there a faster and slower version of the z, or is it mostly interior and maybe some suspension.  I do know there is about a 100 pound weight difference  in some of them.

The base model 6spd is gonna be the quickest in a straightline, but no dealers stock those, because they're cheaper.  The track model is exactly that; built for the track.  18" wheels (which aren't as good drag racing), larger brakes, and some other stuff that is meant for road racing/auto-x/aggressive street driving.  They are quick in a straightline, but a road course is where they belong.

My friend has an 03 350z and he paid $28,000 for the base model.

We raced (my GT has FR headers & Magnaflow exhaust and a bigger MAF housing) and I pulled alittle more than 2 cars on him from a 20mph roll. We messed around a couple more times and he couldn't do anything with me. He ran 14.0 stock, but with some practice he ran 13.8. I ran 13.8 with my current mods, but the last time out to the track - traction didn't exist and I was a second slower.

Dan, I appreciate your story.  That just lets me know I didn't just get lucky.  The Z is a quick little car, but its so hard to hang with a GT, especially from the start.  I think a z would eventually catch a GT, but its gonna be too late to count.  I am looking into a Roush short throw shifter for my car because I am not too happy with the long travel of the stock shifter.  That will definitely give me a better feel of the gears once I find the gates of the new shifter.  I am impressed that you ran a 13.8 with the few mods you have!  GO STANG!!!

With great traction (lower than 2.0) on a stock GT, you can run high 13's in stock form.

I might of left alittle on the table off the line with my 13.8. I think with a 2.1 or 2.0 60' I could see 13.7-13.6 assuming I get traction for 2nd & 3rd.

Thats quick.  I am going to the track this Saturday, so I will post my results if I get a chance.  This will be my first time with this car, so I may have to run a couple passes.

I had a friend with a '01 V6 5spd that ran 13.2s @ 107-108mph... not too shabby.
