Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics)

TacoBill -> Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (4/17/2007 11:52:56 AM)

Current axle-back exhaust: FRPP/Borla Stingers

Pypes tubing diameter: 2.50"
Pypes H slip fitting diameters:
Female OD (drivers side): 2.150"
Male OD (passengers side): 1.990"

When the box was delivered, it looked like it was in bad shape. I was worried that the pipes were dented or something, but everything was okay.

Here's the H-Pipe layed out straight from the box.

Note: On Automatics, the rear O2 sensor plugs are conviently plugged right next to each other.

Next came time to unplug the (passenger side) forward O2 sensor (colored GREEN). This proved to be a royal pain in the butt. I tried to reach the connection plug from the bottom (impossible) and from the top (barely touching my fingers on the plug). Not to waste anymore time, I yanked the battery and tray out. Problem solved.

Now it was time to break loose the exhaust manifold bolts. You need a swivel, deep socket, and a long extension to accomplish this, especially for the upper nuts. After fighting the nuts for several minutes (wouldn't budge for the life of me), I sprayed some penetrating oil on the nuts and like magic, they came off with minimal effort! Who knew...

Now it was time to loosen the mid-pipe clamps. They loosed up no problem, but would not slide back onto the over-axle side of the pipes. After wasting more time messing with them, I discovered that you have to lift up on this little tab that indexes with an alignment rivet (just like the muffler pipe to over-axle pipe). Use a screwdriver and gently lift up on the tab.
[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/Pypes%20Off-Road%20H-Pipe%20install/IMG_0206.jpg[/image]

Once all is loose and ready to drop, carefully pull the hanger rods from the rubber mounts and it'll come down.

A 22mm open end wrench was used to remove the O2 sensors. I moved them over one at a time. I used a dab of anti-sieze lube on the O2 sensor threads before screwing them into the threaded boss of the H-Pipe.

Because I just wanted to install this thing, I chose to use the included saddle clamp. I orientated them facing aft at first, but discovered that it'll interfere with the mid-pipe clamps when tightening. So, I face them forward. A drop of red Loctite was used on the clamp nuts.

Everything gets re-installed like it was. I put some Anti-Sieze on thet threads of the O2 sensors and on the manifold nuts. And don't forget to reconnect all 3 O2 sensors! I left tightening the the 'H' saddle clamp until last so there's no preload in that section. That clamp is a piece, you can't really crank down on those nuts because they'll start to slip. I'll definately keep an eye on this clamp for any loosening or slipping.  ** UPDATE: after 8 months, clamp is still on tight. **

Installation complete!

The sound is raw and pure!  Be forwarned though, if you dislike any droning sounds at all, this O/R-H may not be for you.  However, if you're into loud and obnoxious, this is most definitely for you!

Here's some vids (the camera mic doesn't even come close to what it actually sounds like, but you get the idea.)

video 1:  Launch; windows up
video 2:  From a roll; windows down
video 3:  Start and revs

great write up! this should be a sticky.

Brute03 -> RE: Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (4/17/2007 12:08:06 PM)

great write up man. so s-197's only have one upstream o2 sensor?

Yes, only one upstream on the passenger side (green wire).

Actually they have two upstream o2 sensors and two downstreams. The drivers side front o2 is located on the exhaust manifold, so it doesn't go on the mid pipe like the passengers side does.

Yes, you're correct.  However, I just thought the question was pertaining to the mid-pipe.

SonicBlue05GT -> RE: Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (4/17/2007 1:00:32 PM)

i just got the same H-Pipe for mine, but with Flows on there.

damn your engine bay is spotless....

UrS4 -> RE: Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (4/17/2007 1:06:29 PM)

Tacobill,

Why did you chose to disconnet the O2 sensors instead of just unscrewing them from the mid pipe, installing the new mid pipe and then screwing back in the O2 sensors?

Was it because it is hard to get a wrench to them while still connected to the mid pipe?

i did it the same way as he did. i imagine if you left them plugged in and unscrewed them, it would twist the wires and possibly break them.

Stoenr -> RE: Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (4/17/2007 6:40:53 PM)

I thought you did this along time ago Bill?  Just now a how to?  I swear I read this before?

jettaflavor -> RE: Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (4/17/2007 6:47:56 PM)

Dang - good job. Cops say anything about the noise?

Just as bboren described, I found it easier to transfer the O2 sensors off the car rather than attempt to strugle a wrench up there (and also wanted to avoid any excessive wire twisting).  Not to mention, applying the anti-sieze.

Hey Stoenr, yup, you read this a while back (in TMS).  I'm rewritting a few of my How-To's here in MF for all to enjoy!  [sm=smiley20.gif]

Well, I rolled up on a couple Sheriff's (nervous as heck!), but I layed off the gas and just cruised by them.  If I was on the 'Go Pedal', I'm sure they'll have plenty to say!!  [sm=smiley36.gif]

haha, ive gone by plenty of cops and had them right behind me. not one has pulled me over yet. as long as im going the speed limit i just let off, or if im at a stop just dont gas it too much.

Jackies Stang -> RE: Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (4/29/2007 8:17:26 PM)

How long did this project take, including battery removal and replacement? Also did you change the over axel pipe or leave the stock over pipes in place?

TorchRed04GT -> RE: Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (4/29/2007 11:09:58 PM)

Do the 05-07's need MIL eliminators like the 99-04's do?

sw07gt -> RE: Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (4/29/2007 11:17:30 PM)

Nice write up.

Well after doing a couple, I can swap it out in an hour.  First timers can expect a couple hour job.

I still have the stock mid pipes.  Besides that little pinch right over the axle, the stock set up isn't too bad.

Only if you're not running a custom tune.

Without either the eliminators or tune, the MIL's will come on anywhere from 50 miles to several hundred miles (that I've been told).

Also if anyone is interested in purchasing the H-pipe they are on back order for a few weeks according to Brenspeed today when i placed my order :(

I see that you're currently running the LM's and waiting for the Stingers.  Good call from what I've read everywhere.

The O/R-H with the Stingers are 'crazy loud'... but, with the L/M's, they're INSANELY loud!  [:D]

blaven -> RE: Pypes Off-Road H-Pipe Install (w/pics) (5/1/2007 3:59:14 PM)

Yeah i was watching your Easter vid and thats what sold me on the stingers to go along with the H [:D]
