I am emailing a guy who is selling a 9" w/ 4.11 on Craigslist...  He also wants me to buy his 351 w/ 40k miles along with it for 800 bucks as a combo deal-not a bad deal at all but I just do not need the engine.   Anyway.  He says that the width from drum to drum is 59".  So this must mean that the flange to flange width is either 52 1/4" or 52 3/4", right?  Does anyone know for sure if this axle will or will not work?  I searched through pages of results on Google but couldn't get a definate answer.

Email him back and ask him to measure from flange to flange. The 65-66 axles are 57.25 measuring from flange to flange.

I did email him back...

Are you sure that the axle for the 65-66 is 57.25"

I have seen in many places that it is 52 1/4"

http://www.ultrastang.com/Rearinfo.asp?Page_ID=1

Wow, I just realized that I've been making a mistake while looking for rearends >_<
After reading that page I kept thinking that 52 1/4" was measured from flange to flange, not housing end-end

Yeah, you always want the flange to flange length.  Here, print this out and take it to a junkyard.

So basically the 59" outside drum-outside drum measurement he gave me would be from flange to flange?

if its anything like the 80s rangers/bronco 2's then the axels are different lengths

The axle flange is where your lug nuts are stuck into a round thing,  Maybe this pic will help.  Just scroll down a couple of clicks to see the pic of where the flange is on your axle. http://www.jegs.com/customerservice/CustomAxleForm.pdf

I know what the flange is >_<

According to one site, the 84 Bronco did have a 9 "  Weren't the offset differentials only in the front though?

I was asking if the outside drum-outside drum distance was basically the flange distance because the flange meets right at the brake drum:

So it's basically 59" - 1/8"x2 for the drum material.  Correct?

No need to get sweaty Stephen.
The 8.8 was first introduced into the 1986 Ford Ranger pickup.

Once again, I am having difficulty find info on a rearend.  I am searching for '66 Ranchero rearend width, but I can only find info for up '59 and then '70 and on.  I swear!  8 pages of Google and I can find the width of the other years' rearends, but not the '66.

I had a '76 F150 with a 9" and the rear wasn't offset but the front was.

ok now its a 66 ranchero it should fit if not then u might need some different offset wheels because the ranchero is basically a fairlane which is a little wider than a mustang

Yes I did the backing plate where it mounts to the tube flange. I am using a 9" from an early 60's van. I just have to change the spring perches. That measures 54 1/8 '' from th esame point.  Jason
