Default 1973 351C mach1 will not run right after a winter sit...

Hey guys... this is my first post here, I came acroos a lot of threads from this site whilst searching solutions to my troubles. Any help will be appreciated. When I put my car in storage for the winter, she ran fantastic. Took it out this year, it ran fine the first run, until I shut it off. After the first drive it started hard, is idling unevenly, and backfiring when I roll the throttle on slowly, with a general unevenness about the running. Up to now, I've flushed the motor and changed the oil (with 20% lucas oil; 80% syntec 10W30), changed the plugs and wires, and I'm now on to trying the timing. My problem here is that all I've been able to find for a btdc number is 18 degrees, and I cannot see that far up the markings on the block to mark my balancer for the timing light, so I'm wondering if 18 is in fact the right number for a 4v '73 351C, and if it is, what the best way to get to the markings is. Any help will be greatly appreciated guys, this car is my baby but right now I simply cannot afford the heinous $100 an hour for mechanic work here in edmonton. Thanks in advance!

id start the car and take a screwdriver and while its running slightly rub it over the timing surface this will reveal the timing marks(since they are lower than the surrounding area) is the gas the smae as when you stored it if so that might be all the problem id do a filter change for the fuel and dump the old gas. check all the plugs and make sure all the vaccum connections are good and not dryotted etc. basicaly do agood tune up and start from there

The gas is fresh, and I can see the marks, they look like this:

ATC 10|||||0|||||10|

but that 11th mark on the right side (drivers) is the last I can see

Edit: also the vaccum connections are fine, and I changed the fuel filter in the engine compartment. I have minimal (seriously, the least possible) amount of tools for this work, not even a jack (I just moved away from dad's enormous garage) so I haven't done the filter under the car yet...

On my 351W the starting point for timing adjustments is 6 degrees BTDC. I know nothing about the 351C but 18 degrees BTDC sounds too high to me.

I may be thinking of my father's car for the second filter.
