ok, so heres the motor out of the car...

hmmm, somethings missing.........

well, lets flip this puppy over and see what we have here....... can you find the rod nut shaped impression in the pan? i can

alright, the moment of truth, so your saying to yourself  - how bad could it possibly be? right? riiiiiiiiight...............

heres the front 4 cylinders.......

cant see it here but the bottom of a few cylinders are busted, note the broken piston skirt between main #2 and #3

the rear 4 cylinders.......

note that the main webbing in #3 is cracked and twisted

the crank, i've heard of 2 piece cranks and 1 piece cranks - but a 10 piece crank?

5 pieces here, another 4 pieces in the block attached to twisted remains of rods, and of course the snout still attached to the balancer.

pretty

i think this pushrod zigged when it shoulda zagged.........

check em out, custom made in the late 70's from some bolt manufacturing company in chicago before you could just buy proper bolts for 351w heads on a 302 - i think they were like 100 bucks even back then.....

lastly, as if the car gods hadn't given me enough grief...... somehow the force of all this busted an ear off my starter

honestly, i think this may be the most intense fragging of any motor in the history of history.

holy hell

guess that puts my "wheel falling off my car" to shame. but ya i havnt seen that happen to a blown motor. usually a rod will blow thru or just one piece fail but....ya i feel horrible but thats impressive. kinda makes u wanna see a cut away of the engine to see what happened right when the hampsters decided to break loose of the cage

HOLY POO!!!!!

Here's my .02¢

Bronze the whole motor the way it was when you pulled it. You know, like you do with your kids first pair of shoes. Either that or sell it to an art gallery. I swear to you, I could stare at that thing all day long!! I could see it now.

Artsy-fartsy #1 (in Harvard accent) "It shows raw power and no allowing itself to be confined."

Artsy-fartsy #2 "It screams 'touch me'. Shear brillance"

Artsy-fartsy #3 "Full of pent up, sexual frustration. Stunning."

Redneck passerby "Na, ally'all 're wrong. Looks like whet my brother did ta his Cramaro last year racing that wicked fast 77 Stang."

Here's a test: J B Weld vs. Gorrilla glue. Who will be the victor?!

thats EXACTLY what i was thinking..... do i win an award or something? free stroker kit from fullauto?

what really chaps my ass is it happened while sitting in park with a quick blip if the throttle revving nor higher than 2500 or 3000 (i was mucking with the vacuum advance trying to finish dialing in my timing)

Man - that is something!  Imagine if you were revving it under power on the drag strip!?! That thing would have scattered parts all over the track. Yard sale!

What can you salvage from it?

heads look ok, may be a slightly bent valve or two but i have to pop em apart tomorrow and see. rocker arms and such are ok, most pushrods were good but they'll get tossed. intake, carb, dizzy,  and timing cover is ok. umm..... oil puckup tube survived (can you believe that?) and i'll clean out the oil pump and reuse since its low miles and a really good pump. contemplating keeping the lifters in order and reusing them and the cam in the next motor - it had a wicked sweet lope and crazy power for a 302.

i wonder if i can reuse the arp main cap bolts? all of the caps held tight. would any of you reuse them? (no way on the rods, just the mains)

Out of all the scattered engines at the track, I must say that thats the best one I've seen......sorry about your luck....You can make the new one better, faster, stronger...

What condition is the basic block? Is it cracked anywhere? If you plan on re-using anything, it should be Magna-fluxed before you put it back in a used block, or even a new one for that matter. I wouldnt use the main cap bolts over again after a detonation like that, even if they check good, just wouldnt trust 'em. Same goes for the rod bolts. An oz of prevention is worth a lb of cure.

I have seen an intake manifold come off at the drag strip and drop 100 yards away. It was not that bad! WTF???

actually my buddy had a ear of a starter come off his 84 yota truck. called me and couldnt figure out what the problem was with his truck. told him to try it when i had the hood opened and thought i saw spark so went underneath and got showered with sparks when he did it that time. just kind pushed the starter with my finger and it just rolled over. he just used it as a daily driver and never went offroading with it or ne thing. guess those things arent as strong as they appear....weird

H-S! .  Any ideas as to why it went down the way it did?  Seems a bit odd.  Is it possible that in trying to tune it the timing and other adjustments (can't think of what other adjustments would have such an influence) got so out of whack that it caused this?

That looks scary, It makes you wonder if the parts were defective from the beginning, was it stock parts?
