Install Procedure

1. Shift knob removal & leather boot.
Pull down on the leather boot where it meets the shifter knob. It’s on fairly tight, but once you get it to peel away, the rest comes off easily.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3003B.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3005.jpg

Once the knob is off, the leather boot simply unsnaps away from the center console with minimal effort.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3006.jpg

2. Remove center console.
Open the center armrest to access the (2) Phillip screws.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3009B.jpg

Carefully lift up on the rear section of the console to release the push-in clips near the shifter opening.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3011B.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3011A.jpg

Once free, angle the console around the e-brake handle (must be in the UP position). Use caution to avoid scratching any of the cosmetic plastic trim pieces near the center dash.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3014.jpg

3. Remove dust boot.
Simply peel away at the edges of the rubber dust boot until it’s free from the shifter assembly.

4. Jack up car.
Use your preferred method to achieve this. If using a hydraulic floor jack, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use jack stands for your safety.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3024.jpg

5. Remove 13mm (This and all subsequent mm sizes will be the socket/wrench size) lock nut from trans link arm to shifter linkage. Save nut.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3029E.jpg

6. Remove (2) 10mm nuts from rear threaded studs (use deep socket).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3032.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3033.jpg

7. Pull down on shifter to clear threaded studs (2 metal clips may fall).
In my case, only 1 metal retaining clip was installed on the Drivers side from the factory.
Pulling the shifter down can be a little stubborn because of this clip, so be firm at freeing it away from the studs.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3033.jpg

8. Remove 10mm bolt from forward part of trans link arm to trans. Save bolt.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3039.jpg

One small issue I encountered with the type of ratcheting wrench I used was that the head of the wrench hit the tunnel as I was unscrewing it. Being non-reversible (unless you flip it), I had no choice but to muscle it out. It wasn’t a big deal, but just making note of it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3042.jpg

9. Remove shifter from inside of car.
Note: MGW’s instructions has you remove the rear bracket of the shifter to facilitate to removal of the shifter from inside the car. I left it on and was still able to free it from the car using a little finesse.

MGW includes new blue bushings in the shifter block.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6263.jpg

13A. Cut a rectangular piece off the Dynomat sheet to sufficiently cover both holes. Position this piece just forward of the shifter opening.

(Location of the 2 holes to be Dynomatted)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6551.jpg

14. Set throw setting on MGW linkage block (0-10 turns max out)
MGW’s instructions will have you adjust the throw adjustment from under the car, but I found it easier to adjust it on the table. There’s moderate resistance screwing in/out the block, so there’s little chance of movement when positioning the shifter in place.
Just incase, I temporarily taped it down to prevent movement.

Turn calculation
When the linkage block is screwed all the way in (bottomed out), throw reduction (from stock) is approximately 15%. When screwed out 10 turns (max allowable), reduction is 50%.
At 5 turns out, reduction will be 33%.

Formula
((35% / 12) * X) + 15% = Y

X= number of turns out
Y= % of throw reduction of X

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/th_MVI_2997.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/?action=view&current=MVI_2997.flv)

14A. Install MGW supplied upper dust boot around shifter center shaft and square base prior to dropping it down into the tunnel.
This step is a deviation from the MGW instructions which has you install the upper dust boot after the shifter is locked down in the car.
Reason: To make installation of the boot easier from better access outside the car.
NOTE: If you're installing the shift stop kit, do not install dust boot in this step; you'll install it in step 24.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3086.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3089.jpg

15. Insert MGW shifter down from top, triangular rear section FIRST!

NOTE: Disregard Dynomat shown.
NOTE: No Dynomat required on the INSIDE of the car. Replaced by a thin rubber insulation pad that rests on top of the trans tunnel, then the thicker foam insulator pad on top of it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3092.jpg

16. Re-attach (2) 10mm nuts to shifter and rear studs (from step 6) – SNUG ONLY!
Do not forget to use the supplied large flat and lock washers under the nuts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3094A.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3094B.jpg

17. Dynomat bottom of shifter opening; cut and trim to fit.

Cut pieces in such a manner where it makes a 90deg fold ('L' shape flashing method) to the shifter assembly base to the body, completely sealing off any heat/noise from entering the cabin.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6577.jpg

18. Connect the forward part of trans link arm support to trans using the 10mm bolt (removed from step 8) – USE SUPPLIED LOCKWASHER UNDER HEAD OF BOLT.
Trans link arm support goes on PASSENGER SIDE.
As stipulated in the MGW instructions, start this bolt by hand for at least 6-8 threads to ensure no cross-threading (blue Loctite optional). Tighten all the way.

19. Using the supplied clamp, connect the link arm (rod) to shifter main body support.
Main body support has 1/2 round groove, may have to slightly rotate either assembly to align the rod into the groove (MUST ALIGN PERFECTLY).
Once aligned, use socket/wrench to evenly tighten down both 13mm bolts in clamp. (Blue Loctite optional)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6576.jpg

20. Tighten the (2) 10mm nuts on the rear studs (from step 16).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3094B.jpg
21. Remove temporary tape (on linkage block) and insert link arm stud through linkage block and reinstall the 13mm nut (from step 5).

NOTE: Ensure large BLACK ARROW is pointing to the DRIVERS SIDE when attaching the trans link arm to the linkage block. If throw is being adjusted from underneath the car, it can be used as a reference on how many turns the linkage block is screwed out.

IMPORTANT note from MGW: The lock nut on the linkage should be locked down firmly. It is designed to actually seat against the rod just prior to locking down on the urethane bushings. You should get on them as if you were tightening down a bolt normally. Do not leave it loose.
In addition, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN IT! The stud on the link arm may strip or break off if overtightened.

The nut also is a lock nut which is why Ford did not need a lock washer. Look at the end of the nut carefully and you will see 3 little prongs sticking inward into the threads. The blue loctite is definitlty a good added safety measure.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6007.jpg

Wipe off any grease off the link arm stud threads after pushing it through the blue bushings.

22. SKIP

23. Install shift stops at this point if desired (not recommended by MGW). See included directions on installation.
No picture.

24. SKIP

25. Laydown the sound and water barrier plate (black thin rubber piece).
Orient the plate so the 2 round holes are positioned over the studs in the rear.
Stretch the plate around the base cap of the shifter so that it goes under and lays flat on the topside of the transmission tunnel.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6586.jpg

25A. Install the rubber dust boot at this point in the installation if haven't already done so.
Must go all the around the square base. Blowdryer/heatgun may facilitate installation, but be cautious of overheating the rubber, goal is to just make it more pliable.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6588.jpg

25B. Install Dynomat sound plate barrier around shifter and boot.
Note the (2) slit cutouts for the studs in the rear, also used to correctly index the sound plate.
Work edges under the boot and square shifter base. Objective is to have the sound plate as flat as possible.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3128.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3129.jpg

Carefully tuck the sound barrier under the shifter base. Caution! Don’t use anything sharp or risk cutting into the rubber dust boot!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3130.jpg

26. Re-install center console removed from step 2.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3135.jpg

27. Install shift handle bracket to shifter center stud using the supplied (2) cap screws and long 3/16 Allen wrench.
Position the handle bracket so the MGW LOGO is facing the DRIVERS SIDE.
Bolt heads used on the handle bracket must be on the PASSENGER SIDE.
Rotate the handle bracket so the back handle stud hole is centered in the console shifter opening, then temporarily snug up.
IMPORTANT! Engage 1st and 2nd gear slowly and check for clearance between the handle bracket and the side of the console. If too close, loosen and rotate the handle bracket accordingly.
After final positioning, tighten the (2) cap screws down.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3138.jpg

28. Install the shift knob shaft into the handle bracket.
Height of shift knob can be adjusted at this time. Make sure it’s within the range of the slit.
Rotaional positioning (clocking) of the knob can also be adjusted (after knob is installed and tightened down).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3142.jpg

29. Reinstall leather shift boot by snapping it in.
Depending on which handle configuration you opted for, if it’s like mine, you may need a small putty knife to work the leather shift boot shifter hole opening around the rubber grommet of the shift knob shaft.
Note: That lock nut you see on the threaded shaft is part of my Hurst ball kit, not MGW’s.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_3147.jpg

31. Check for gear engagement for all gears including reverse prior to first test drive.

Installation complete! http://forums.bradbarnett.net/images/smilies/banana.gif

all i can say is WOW. that took a lot of effort on your part and a fine job also. i was going to keep my stock shifter but after reading this thread and the other one i seen yesterday, i might just have to go with a new MGW shifter. awesome writeup and pictures.

Awesome wrtie up as usual Taco Bill!! I'm still waiting for mine to come in. Did you order it with the shift stops? Also, did the white shifter come with the kit?

I ordered the shift stops with mine. I'm glad you showed pictures of the shifter handle. It looks like it is the same finish as on my hurst T shifter handle. It's going to be sacriligious to put a hurst shifter handle on this superior shifter but I like the way the T handle feels.

I can't wait to get mine. Thanks for the great write up, I have a real good idea as to what will be involved now.

Outstanding!

It's easy to write an off-the-cuff b/i/t/c/h post, or my favorite: the I-did-it-so-obviously-you-should-do-it post. But it takes a lot of time to put together the photo tutorial that you did. It's obvious.

Thanks a lot - we all learned something from this. What a great job!!! Best of all, it is exactly why these forums are so great. Kudos.

I found the following video at MGW's web site. Pretty nice!

http://www.mgwltd.com/george/MGW%202...eo(medium).wmv

All vendor's should do this. George is the man!!!

The only thing that worries me a little bit is that the shifter handle shown in the video is not the same as the one Taco Bill showed. The one in Taco Bills write up is much nicer. I hope that's the one that comes with the kit. I can't wait. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas.

There is no shift knob in the kit to my knowledge.

You should have been asked when you ordered which shift handle you wanted...Either the stock / MGW Gripper Ball thread, or the Hurst thread. I believe the one in Bill's write up is the Hurst handle......

Thanks Mike, that explains it.I wasn't asked which handle I wanted when I placed the order. I did tell them that I had a hurst shifter knob. I hope I get the right one. Just for referrence, this is a picture of your's Mike, it's the same as in the MGW video:

Thanks everyone for the kudos!

Replaced a couple of the completed install pics.

I edited step 21 withan important note from MGW.

Also edited step 14A to note the shift stops.

Some demo videos are also up at the end of the install post.

Some answers/clarifications..
Odiaz- Yes, the shift stop kit was included. However, MGW does not recommend the installation of stops kits after consulting with Tremec. Our transmissions have internal stops that are more than adequate. It's suggested that if you do install the stops, the supplied instructions must be followed to the tee, or risk damage to your transmission.

No shift knob is included in this kit. You are given thethe choice of which shift handle you want at the time you place your order, SAE or Metric. The stock shift knob uses the Metric, while almost all aftermarket knobs (MGW Gripper and Hurst included) uses the SAE Standard threads.

The Dynamat and sound barrier are extra assurances to keep the sound and heat from entering past the tunnel opening. A nice touch from MGW. I do not notice any vibrations, noise, or feel any heat for that matter.

This is the Hurst ball I got, part number and thread info can be seen in the pic. Should be able to order it from any Hurst Dealer.

I got my shifter in the mail today. Woohoo!!

This is the best packed prodcut I've ever received. After getting through all of the wrapping, the quality of the product is totally amazing. The completeness of the kit is unbelievable. This product is by far the best product I have purchased in a very long time. It includes all the nuts, washers, and small tools you will need to install. All the pieces are individually wrapped and labeled. The dynamat is an added plus to reduce the noice levels. None of the other shifter on the market do this. Every piece in the kit that makes contact with another metal part is coated in rubber to reduce noice and vibration. You can tell George wants his product to be the best on the market.

I can't wait to get it installed tomorrow.

The only comment I have to make is to make sure you specify which shifter lever you want when you order. George offers two. If you want one that will work with the stock shifter just tell them you are using the stock knob. If you want the shifter lever exposed as in the hurst, tell them that you want the shifter lever that will work with the Hurst shifter knobs. I sent George an email and I'm hoping he can accomodate my request and exchange the shifter lever for me.

For any of you thinking this shifter is a bit more expensive then the others, believe me, IT IS WORTH IT!!! I haven't even installed it yet but from looking at it and comparing it to the others out there, this is defineitely much better engineered and manufactured. The quality is absolutely amazing!

So, apparently they didn't pick up the fact about the shift handle when you commented about the hurst ball.....bummer.....But I am sure George will get you taken care of no problem.....

Look forward to hearing your impressions with install and function. You will love it.....Also, did you receive the new bushings with your shipment? What about the new progressive springs??

Hi Mike,

Yes, it did come with the new bushings. They look different then the ones in these pictures. They appear to be made of a thicker material and they are black.

The shifter came with the original springs but I read in another forum that George will be shipping all of the shifters invoiced after today with the new spring.

I was out of town all week and just got home around 8:30 PM. It was all I could do to control myself and not go into the garage to install it tonight. I can't wait to get it in. Unfortunately they're saying we're getting a noreaster starting tomorrow with heavy wind, lots of rain and maybe even some snow. This has been the worst spring, I've hardly had a chance to drive the car at all.

Sorry to hear about the weather. Won't go into what it's like here in So Cal......;) I read that same info on the other forum. I may try the other springs when George sends em to me, just for comparison. Depends on what's involved with removing the current ones. I will go ahead and swap out the bushings, just because I know my current ones have a little wear from using with the Saleen adaptor....Good luck. Hope you get to install this weekend. Let me know what you think.....

Well, inspite of the noreaster, I installed the MGW shifter today. The install was fairly simple, thanks to TacoBill's excellent intructions and Gerorge's video on his site. I ordered the shift stops but after reading the instructions and the warnings, I decided not to install them. If you are thinking about ordernig this shifter, make sure you specify what type or shifter handle you want and talk to george about whether or not you need the shift stops. His instructions warn that if you install the shift stops, there is no warranty and you may damage the shifter, the transmission or both.

Tha rain is falling sideways here on LI so I'm not taking the car out. I installed the shifter adjusted 12 turns out, which is the max. At this setting, the throws are reduced by 50%. My shifter came with the stiffer spring and although I have not driven the car yet, it feels just right. The shifts are really tight. I may have to adjust the throw a little further but I won't know until I actually drive the car. I can't wait!! This is the tightest shifter I've felt thus far. The throws are much shorter then the tri-ax, the Roush or the hurst. This is an excellent piece of equipment.

Obviously I'm not going to do this mod to my auto trans GT but as a retired graphic artist I have the greatest admiration for your professional production and the attention to minute detail that you incorporate in your "How To Do It" series. For the modestly mechanically inclined individuals, you make it possible for them to do their own mods and experience the sence of achievement in doing it themselves. I have read your write-ups and watched your videos with much interest even if I don't intend on doing the mods.

Bill, I have to ask, are you a graphics pro of any kind?

Thanks so much for your entertaining instructional write-ups. I look forward to seeing the next one.

Thanks guys for the kind words and support!

For those wanting to know how all this startedout for me,way back when, when doing research for my first mod (the Steeda Ultralite drop), I knew that I wanted to do the install myself, but found limited resources in the Forums on how to actually install the lowering springs. All assumed some level of experience orthey simply had written instructions, but no photos. It was like, "Lower the pumpkin and replace the springs.. now do the fronts."
So,I took a bunch of pictures mostly for reference, just incase I had torefer back to something during the install. Then I thought, since I had all the pics in sequence, why not jot down some install notes for each pic and post it? The rest is history.

No matter how simple a mod or install may seem, I do it anyway. There's always someone out there looking for the step by step that I was looking for back in my springs day.

Which btw, ifI don't have it up on here in MF, I'll post it up soon.

Bill.

I took the plunge today (Sunday)and installed a new in the box MGW shifter I purchased from another forum member. My sincere thanks for your patience, pictoral step by step process, and explanation, boy did it help. Here are some obervations to assist future DIY weekend project specialist:

MGW included an update kit with a new shifter block and spring (max turrns out now are 10 not 12), bushings, and rubber gasket that goes between the Dynomat and foam gasket. These guys are absolute Pro's!
When MGW says using a lift facilitates the job, LISTEN. I did it like you did with 2 jack stands, BUT when your 6'1" and 265 it becomes a challenge that left me with a scraped back, a neck that craves Aleive, and a shortage of band aids for all the cuts on my hands.........
The FWD tran link arm installation was a FPITA. I ended up finger tighting the rear mount of the arm just so I could get the FWD bolt started.
Having a 10mm deep socket is a must for the backmounting nuts.
Other than the above it went exactly as you described. Took me 4 hrs. (including the required trip for the deep 10mm socket, invariable 15 trips back and forth from under the car to check your descriptions and try different wrench combinations). Incredible difference! I went 6 turns, but I think will go back in 1 turn after being cleared by my orthopedic surgeon LOL......

Thanks again,

Keith

Yes, I too installed the updated shifter block (but not the rubber insulator) and I have it currently set at 5 turns out.

Thanks for the install tips, I'll update the install thread with the new block and insulator once I get some good pics from a friend's upcoming install.

I noticed you said the mgw gripper ball fits the sae 3/8th shift stalk. From what I read on the mgw site it fits the stock metric 12mm threads. Also the Roush shift balls fit the standard stock 12mm threads. I just found this out the hard way. I ordered my shifter with 3/8th and it wont fit my roush shifter, so now I gotta send it back for the 12mm ones...bummer since I wanted to install it tomorrow on my day off. Guess I'll have to wait another week or two.

TacoBill
09-19-2007, 06:24 PM
Sorry LuckyD.
I do have the MGW Gripper and it does thread onto the SAE Standard handle. Even my Hurst ball threads onto the standard handle.

Sounds like something changed down the line or perhaps there's 2 different Gripper knobs?

09-19-2007, 07:01 PM
Hmmm....something must have changed. My MGW Gripper Ball is threaded to match stock...12mm I guess. I had it on my stock shifter. Same threads I ordered on the MGW shifter. Love the Gripper Ball......

MGW makes a Gripper knob for both the 12mm and 3/8" threads. It's not on their web site so just call them and tell them which you want. I had a 12mm Gripper knob already so George sold me the 3/8" guts for it so I can use my Gripper on either shaft.

Well I got my mgw shifter a few months ago..just havn't had any time to install it. So I installed it today finally. Went pretty smoothly. Hardest part was getting the trans arm bolt out, then back in. I didn't have a ratchet so I used vice grips and my hands to get it out, pita. I used blue locktite on most of the bolts, as did tacobill. I set mine to 50% shorter throws, which it did do. Stock was 3 inch, now its 1 1/2 inch throws.

Now my problem, between the Vortech and the shifter I think I fried my clutch. Tacobill do you have a tutorial for clutch replacement?

Nothing of significance, but here are a few pics related to 08+ models with Ambient Lighting.
Also, a few pics related to the redesigned Shifter Handle Block and Support Rod Clamp.

Revised Shifter Handle Block gets installed the same way as the original, 2 bolt clamping side for the shift handle, 1 bolt clamping side to the center shifter post.
As the previous design, in static neutral, rotate (clock) the shift handle to center the shift knob within the shifter opening of the center console.

Note: After the re-installation of the leather shifter boot, check to see if the Shifter Block rubs against the edge of the console opening. This condition may cause a reat in the boot. Rotate the Shifter Handle block as necessary to eliminate and riding conditions.

Step 11: Skip. MGW is now shipping with new blue bushings already installed in the shifter block.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6263.jpg

Step 12: No Dynomat required on the INSIDE of the car. Replaced by a thin rubber insulation pad that rests on top of the trans tunnel, then the thicker foam insulator pad on top of it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6585.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6586.jpg

Step 14: Throw adjustment is now 0 -10 turns MAX. This results in a throw reduction of 20 to 50% from stock. FYI.. I have mine set at 5 turns out which is about a 35% reduction.

Step 17: New underside Dynomatting procedure. Cut pieces in such a manner where it makes a 90deg fold ('L' shape) to the shifter assembly base to the body, completely sealing off any heat/noise from entering the cabin.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6573.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/tacobill35/MGW%20shifter%20install/IMG_6577.jpg

Step 28: No longer required to align shift handle slit to opening of shifter handle block. It will tighen no matter how the slit is clocked allowing rotational orientation of shift handle once it's tighen down all the way.
