Yesterday I took my 1998 3.8L convertible to a well known
reputable muffler shop to have cat back duals put on. When
I got there they suggested that I would be disappointed with
the installation becuase there would be a loss of back
pressure and a corresponding loss of power.

Called a couple of Ford dealerships service writers. Neither
of them agreed with the muffler shop. They both said it would
be beneficial.

I would like to hear from some folks who have actually had
it done. Did you loose any power? Second question, anybody
who has had it done use Walker mufflers? Thanks, Joel

Thanks for the reply. Are you happy with the sound you get
from the two chamber Flowmasters? One thing I would like to
avoid, if possible, is what I call the "mad mosquito" exhaust
sound. That was the reason for the Walkers (a suggestion
from the same muffler shop). Thanks, Joel

Jonny is right about the Flowmasters being 2 chamber 40's. Flowmaster makes basically three types of mufflers: a single chamber, race only; the 2 chamber 40's everybody runs on the street; and a 3 chamber "boy, I wasted my money" quiet can that's about equal to a stock Buick LeSlobber muffler for sound quality.

I sell parts for a living, and I have to wonder about this shop you speak of. What alternative do they suggest for your exhausts rather than the duals? Sounds like they've been eating too much rice, wink-wink, because your car will definately be able to use the freer pipes to your advantage. A little four banger WOULD be gasping if you stuck duals on it. It would be like running it without ANY exhaust, there'd be so little back pressure.

Tin Kicker,
The muffler shop made no alternative suggestion. They said stock
was better. They were willing to do the job, just wanted to put up
the disclaimer that I would loose power. The shop came highly
recommended because of the quality of their installations.

Flowmaster shows a 60 series muffler on their web site specifically
for 4 and 6 cylinder engines. Anybody used those? What is the difference
between them and the 40 series?

Yes you will lose power, in terms of torque.  Yes you will feel faster at high revs.  That's where you use that horsepower to keep moving.  You will lose torque, torque gets you off the line you would be best to stay with a single out if you want power numbers and have power where you will spend most of your time, dual if you want a look lose some torque and hope you can catch-up on the top end.  Your choice.  And yes the muffler shop is right, the dealership is right, and Jonny is right.  Just not right completely.

Thanks SilverGTV8. That makes sense to me. Will the loss of torque
be so much that one might be really disappointed in the perfomance
of the car or just not quite as quick as it was with the single?

Anyone out there stayed with the single but put on something
like a Flowmaster for sound. If so were you satisfied with the
sound or was it the "mad mosquito" sound. Definately don't want
the "MM" sound. JoelJoel37899.6983564815

Get the dual exhaust, I have it on my 03 v6 it sounds like a stock v8 and you will notice the extra power and sound. Its not alot but it sure sounds awesome. its better for your car anyways, I wouldnt give my business to that place though if they arent confident in there work.

ideally (as i see it) get a flowmaster, but dont dual it.  you get the sound and keep the torque

Joel, every muffler shop says you'll loose backpressure and horses. Every single one of them is living in a myth.

i did duals on mine, and loss of torque and power in the first gears was a lot....
i did an offroad h pipe following by slp loudmouth cat back system.. the sound is very loud, like an old muscle car. but i lost an insane amount of torque...
im going back to single exhaust, or run another dual setup. may be i put back my catalics.. dont know what to do...

i just did a true dual 2.5" setup with my stock cats...there is no discernable loss of torque...just more power in the higher RPM range...doesn't really feel any different down low...i plan to go to high flow cats soon though too...so that may lead to a loss of torque

Why the hell did you ressurect(sp?) a topic of like 2 years old. Is there a rule of opening threads that are really old?

The little bit of tq you may lose bottom end will gladly be made up with the sound you get. Also, not to mention your mustang will have TWO pipes instead of one!!!

Check out my post  - quick rev exhaust vid  -

I have true duals with "H" crossover, flowmaster 40's and no cats
