Now I am not posting this to try and start a brand war or anything but I need some serious insight. Also I posted this on a gto forum. I can either get a new 2007 mustang gt or a new 2006 gto (yes there are still ones new out there) for about the same price. Now I have read up on both and have driven both but i am still having trouble deciding. Ok first off let me tell you what my plans for this car are. I want it mainly as a daily driver, but still want to do some upgrades and make it a road warrior. With that said, I like them both very much. To me what the gto has on the mustang is the extra 100hp and a 6spd manual tranny. I love the look of the mustang though, the gto is ok. I would like to hear people’s experiences with both car and their opinions. Any insight would be appreciated
P.S. I know the results of this poll will be biased. Also I want a new car with a warranty as my daily driver

Not to knock the GT, but when drivenright the GTO can hit high 12's. When driven right the GT mid 13's. A CAI and tune would help but stock for stock the GTO is quite a bit faster and stronger up top. I have driven both. In fact I drove A 06 GTO from Atlanta to Naples Fl and got a speeding ticket[:@]
Now the 2004 GTO is more in line with us, in fact the GT is a tick faster
I went through the same decision process about a month ago and posted on this forum and a GTO forum. I wound up with a 2007 Mustang GT/CS. Basically, I liked the GTO but really couldn't get comfortable with buying a such a limited production, discontinued model with the hybrid Austrailian/US manufacture. In terms of a comparison between the two cars, here are my thoughts:
The Mustang GT feels like a smaller, lighter car. Even though the external dimensions are similar, the Mustang weighs about 300 lbs less than the GTO and to me visability was better. To me, the controls in the Mustang feel much more connected and offer better feedback, especially the shifter (I was looking at manuals in both cars.). The back seat in the GT is smaller but the trunk is actually pretty decent size. The GTO back seat is larger but the trunk is a joke. The GT has much more of a muscle car feel. Access to the back seat in both cars is a pain because neither car has the quick release and return passenger seat.
The GTO interior is nicer and it feels more upscale. It feels more like an AMG Mercedes at a reasonable cost. The Mustang GT feels more like a muscle car. The Corvette driveline does feel a good bit more powerful than the Mustang. 2nd gear from about 30 mph pulls like crazy but other than that the Mustang felt better.
The resale value of the GTO is already bad and with the upcoming cars like the Camaro and Pontiac G8, I think it will probably get worse. I was also very worried about parts availability if something went wrong, especially with the GTO specific parts. There are only about 45K GTOs.
Styling is subjective. While I liked the styling of the GTO, I love the retro style of the Mustang. The GTO is much more generic coupe and could easily be mistaken for a Grand Prix 2-door. The proportions around the rear quarter panel also don't flow as well. The Mustang looks great from any angle.
There is also MUCH more aftermarket and club support for the Mustang. As I said, I considered both and went with the Mustang. Good luck with your choice.
I struggled with this too. Honestly I've only driven a Mustang and never a GTO. The more and more I looked into it, the less I liked GTO. Yes, it has more power than Mustang but its sooooooooooooo UGLY. Mustangs are more popular and seem to have a better resale value.

The first time somebody walked by and said "nice Grand Am" I would lose it.
Love that... I think the Stang has a great combo of looks and power. Back in the 60's there was a fascination with sleeper cars... which is that the current Goat is.. It looks like a grand am (barf) and performs likea muscle car. You'll get more recognition in a mustang... The cops will also recognize you quite a bit more in a stang than a grand am... er gto Yes I am partial, but its my opinion and I'm entitled to it... Good luck with whichever you decide to purchase...
