Just the learn the basics of driving and get used to it; every young driver needs experience at driving. Chances are, you will probably get into an accident, whether it be your fault or not. One day you will have your dream car and you will truely appreciate it. quote:
ORIGINAL: dlamib My first car i had to earn. It was an Opel Kadet station wagon. I was just glad to have some wheels when i was sixteen. I got my first Mustang at 26 so hang in there. Now i'm working on my third stang. If you really want it and it's not a passing fancy then work for it, save for it and you will eventually have it! Good luck. P.S. if you got the urgh to race do it on a track not the street. Dude, all I can say is just be happy that you're getting something, and that you don't have to actually BUY your first car yourself! Back in '95 when I turned 16 (God I feel so old!), I spent $1800 on a p.o.s. retired '77 Ford LTD II cop car. Man, that car was truly the pits, but I was proud of my purchase cuz it was MY car that I bought with MY money. Ha, at least it had a 351 in it, but with it being retired from a hard life, it didn't drive so well. But it was my transportation thru h.s. and into college. While I was still in college, I had to replace my first car cuz it was dying a slow death. As much as I wanted to replace it with a Mustang, I couldn't cuz it would cost too much (factor in gas and INSURANCE, especially for still being under 25). Instead, I bought a non-descript, used VW Jetta with a VR6 and 5-speed. My first stick shift car, definitely important to learn driving stick on a car you don't care too much about. Good transportation to get from A to B, and at least I could get it with a bike rack to transport my mtn bike/road bike on top. Meanwhile, since about '94, I had been saving for my dream car: I knew I would someday own an SVT Mustang Cobra convertible. Finally, in early 2003, I knew I would be graduating from college after Fall '03 and starting my career. The '03 NY Auto Show unveiled my ultimate purchase: a 2004 Mystichrome Cobra, but of course mine would be a convertible. After officially graduating from college and starting my first job out of college, I was finally able to afford to BUY MY OWN dream car, AND IT FELT SOOOOOOO GOOD that day I took delivery of it! Believe me, you'll appreciate it more when you actually work for it! For me, I knew I had to not only finish h.s., but also graduate from college and secure a high-paying job just to be sure that I would afford my baby. And after a decade of saving, I was able to put down close to 75% of the total, and I only financed a small chunk. As they say, the best things in life aren't for free.

A 300HP car isnt a good idea for a first car. I had a 1977 Nova with the big bad 250 I-6 "3 on the tree". Still managed to wreck it quickly. If you bought that youd either get in trouble with the police, or worse wreck it and feel bad about it

My first car was a '87 Honda Civic and my mother bought it for me right after my dad died. I paid her back but, that car wasnt my choice. That was a nice little car for the time and it lasted for several years til some drunk guy decided to run a red as I was goin on the green....I was pissed.
