You gotta admit though...even though the new Mustangs are a lot nicer looking, them Camaro motors are pretty intimidating. I wanted one back in the day (2002) just because of the motor.
No doubt, Chevy had some good motors. But, I've been a Ford fan for years.
One thing that always amazed me, but no one else seemed to notice: Ford won the races and Chevy BOUGHT the names!
Trans Am = Ford Mustangs kicked butt, Chevy bought the name. Grand Prix = Lola-Ford cars kicked butt, Chevy bought the name. LeMans = Ford GT kicked butt, Chevy bought the name.
Any one else miss this?
Oh, yeah, don't forget IROC = International Race of Camaros
shouldn't even be an argument...there is no comparing the two cars...if you get away from pure speed the S197 is much better than any of its recent predecessors...even then the V6 base model is much more powerful than the previous base model...anyone who tells you different hasn't driven both...but it this way...I would have NEVER bought a Stang unless the S197 came out...its a much better car...
if you want pure speed from the factory then why not buy a GT?
now being a former f-body fan after the release of the camaro in 1967 chevy beat the mustangs in every race that year. also now in the races the vettes are destroying everything. so in all fairness ford did not win every race chevy's are a force to be reckoned with now we can all bashthem till we turn blue in the face but it won't changed the fact they manage to build a sweet motor but that is about all they could do right, bodys wouldnt hold up, rearend would get blown to bits, but the motor's have always been works of art. the classic chevelles with 454 big blocks, and now gm just released the new 572 crate engine. also the LS1-7 have been incredible every upgrade you can add improves them they have soem of the best reactyions to adding power over any other motors i have seen you could add close to 20rwhp from intake and cat-back. they benefitted from eevrything. but ford on the other hand never did anything really crazy from the factory(until the release of the cobra and the terminator.) for has had their amazing cars but nothing solely on their own they rely alot on third party contibutors like roush saleen, shelby. but they have done alot of crazy things with their car and also have concetrated on quality overall better interior, doors, door hangers, suspension, rearend(were not sealed shut) in my 02 z28 you had to replace the rear they didn't have a cover. but overall bang for your buck ford takes the cake. Chevys are great race cars, but thats where they stop fords have been great everything.
I think if your looking for a newer car for yourself, you should definitly go with the 05+, but if your looking for more of a project car, go with the 99-04's. The 05's are nice, i test drove a steeda v6 and was very happy with it, BUT parts are still expensive for them. They also seem to have a few quirks (throttle lag, revving for no reason, interior getting soaked, windows not working right, etc.) One of the few good things with the older sixes is that they are EXTEMELY reliable. Engine wise you have to do very little to maintain them and they are easy to work on. Parts are very cheap and plentiful for these cars/engines. Ultimately the choice is yours, both have ups and downs. Either way have fun!!

yeah, because it's only a $126,000 difference, as to $5,000...

4.2 is the truck motor, the mini van stole the 3.8 from the stang, then ford wanted to get away from the headgasket rep the 89-96.5s had (some idiots still say they do but they dont) and slightly stroked the motor
yeah man the 4.0 car should be far superior, especially the motor. isn't the 3.9 a truck or minivan engine?
And where do you think the 4.0L came from? They're based on a long line of engines, back to the Mustang II's. The same drivetrain as the mustangs, is in the explorers.

Best thing to do is to drive both and choose what YOU like best. I had a Fox style GT and waited until now to purchase another. I'm glad they brought back the legend look. Reminds me of the stangs when I was a kid.

i didn't realize that. i thought the 4.0 was new to the 05 mustangs.
Here's the Mustangs I have experience with that are pertinent to your question
1) My 2006 4.0L, auto 2) My brother's 2004 Mach 1, manual 3) My buddy's 2001 V6 convertable, auto 4) My father's 2002 V6 convertable, auto 5) My sister-in-law's V6 auto
NOTES - All of the above owners of the previous year Mustangs agree that the new S197 rides much, much smoother with less rattles in the body, a completely different beast. - I've personally taken the 2002 convertable on a 1k mile trip to Wisconsin and back and drive it every so often even now. The S197 has a much more smoother ride; and the old ones feel like a slug compared to it (no offense to anyone that has one). - All but my brother with the Mach 1 wants the new body style and really likes how it looks and are debating on trading theirs in like you are. - To me, the interior of the S197 is more comfortable. The armrest on the door is giving as opposed to the hard plastic of the previous cars, and considering how I drive, this is a big deal. - The Mach 1 has less than 2k miles on it, sits under a tarp in a garage, and I've had the opportunity to drive it several times. It's friggin' badass. (just thought I'd add that =) - If anyone doubts my connection to these cars, PM me and I'll send you a link to my MySpace page that has pics off all of them with mine together during a drunken party in the valleys of Virginia =)
Overall, I have tons of experience with both body styles. I could have bought a 2003 GT for almost 10k less than what i paid for mine that was still under factory warranty, but after driving both, opted for the V6 S197 simply for the style, drivability, and comfort. Ultimately it is your decision though.
Not sure why anyone would doubt you. I've drive an S197 GT and V6, an SN95 convertable, an old fox 302, and my pops has a Mustang II.. The mustangs previous to the S197 had horrible interiour. The reason the old 3.8's were "sluggish" was because of the transmission. I believe there is a 10HP difference between the 3.8 and the 4.0
Whats up everyone i have a tuff desion too make soon is too keep(as in selling) my 3.9 2004 v6 auto or buy a 2007 4.0 v6 5 speed is there much differnce? is the ride better? does the engine feel faster? please tell me anything what you think is better then the 99-04 modles.
