View Full Version : Getting top to go down further?

Hey guys,
I always thought that my top didn't look like it went down as far as it should.
I managed to pick up a top boot, and it doesn't fit.
This just reaffirmed my theory that the top didn't go down as far as it is supposed to.

So here's my question,

Have any of you encountered a similar problem?
Does anybody know how to make it go down further?
Adjustment points etc.?

Thanks!

Not to be rude, but just making sure that there is nothing in the area where the top goes down into. Also are you closing the latches after you unhook them???

Hey no problem, I welcome all thoughts.
There's nothing in the trunk. I even took the trunk interior piece out to be sure that wasn't the issue.

Also are you closing the latches after you unhook them??

Yep.. the entire top needs to come down a few inches I believe, for the boot to fit.

I've taken the interior 1/4s out, and found at least one point that makes the top go down a little more. (Already did)

Somebody has to have had this problem before!

Sorry, I was talking about the area just infront of the rear window, but behind the back seat. I haven't had this problem before, but if you can find where the top is touching something else then you can find your problem.

That was the first thing I looked for when I took the interior trunk piece out. I couldn't see anything.

Thanks for the ideas...

There is no doubt your top can go further...just that pic in your sig looks a bit too high to be down all the way.

Maybe the top motor is messed up somehow?

Mine does not go down all the way either, but I have a sub box causing the issue. I am not sure about what would be causing yours. Is the frame binding in any way?

IF YOU FIGURE THIS OUT LET ME KNOW. MY 86 DOESN'T WORK SO I HAVE TO PUT IT DOWN MANUALLY. IT DOESN'T GO DOWN FAR ENOUGH BUT I FIGURE THATS BECAUSE THE TOP IS OLD AND STIFF. I'M NOT GOING TO WORRY UNTIL I PUT ON A NEW TOP. I'LL MAKE SURE IT WORKS THEN. YOUR NOT ALONE. GOOD LUCK.

My 95 GT last weekend developed a similar problem. Mine goes down all the way, but it will not go closed completely. It stops 2”-3” equally across from the windshield, (3 weeks ago it was closing all the way on the right side and stopping short on the left side) so I removed the rear interior quarters I didn’t find any magical adjustment that cured the problem. I did loosen the adjustments (for what is was worth) and let the car sit out in the hot sun and this improved things aprox. 90%.

I noticed that the top is so tight the arch is a little flat; you can really see it when you put the windows up and it pushes the top into shape.

Good thing I had an appointment to get a new top before this BS began.

Can you push the top all the way down after your motor stops? ifnot then something has to be catching the frame somewhere. And when you close it, its not supposed to come all the way to the windshield frame. that extra 2-3 inches is so that the top stretches and doesnt flap in the wind, and it pulls the wrinkles out of it.

Not really, had to really force it along with letting it in the hot sun! It seems pulled so tight that the frame is being pulled down, I need to put the top up to restore its shape.

if you have to really force it down the extra couple inches so you can get your top boot on there then something is catching either your top frame or fabric when it folds down. so look everywhere possible that could keep it from going all the way down and you should find your answer. if not then i dont know what to tell you. maybe someone else on here knows what the problem may be.

My passenger side didn't seem to go down all the way, it was a couple inches above the drivers side. I had my wife lower the top a few inches at a time and found top wasn't folding right. This was causing it to bunch up in between part of the metal frame. I had to help the vinyl into the correct folding position as she lowered it. I am currently leaving it in the garage with the top down and boot on for a few weeks to see if the vinyl will "learn" the correct folding position.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem on my 2001 Stang. This might work for you but sure didn't me.Its a 94-02 diagram but it looks the same as mine.No matter how far i turned the downstop bolt down it didn't help. It seems to be stopping on Downstop bumper not the actual Downstop bolt. Anybody have any other ideas sure would be appricated.
