Ok, I'm just finishing up my 5 lug swap on my 91 notch and I want to do suspension/handling now that I've got the wheels and brakes done. I also plan on getting full length subframe connectors and probably replacing all the bushings throughout the suspension.
My questions...
Do they sell "bushing kits" ?
I want to lower the car, how do I know how much I should lower it? I'm running 245/45/17's up front and 275/40/17's out back now, but might go wider.
I want a firm, well handling ride, and would give up some launch capabilites to feel more secure at high speeds.
What else do you recommend for setting my car up right?
For the suspension, I would suggest starting with a good spring kit, and shocks & struts. Springs will help improve handling & lower the car... while the shocks will help dampen the movement and smoothen out the ride.
If you have the wider tires in the rear, I wouldnt suggest lowering over 1.25 inches on your 5.0.
The Ford Racing B springs are a very popular spring kit, as well as the Steeda Sport Springs. The B springs will lower about 1 inch on your car, while the Steeda springs will lower about 1.25 inches. The Steeda springs are slightly stiffer.
Tokico Struts & Shocks would go well with either of the springs above... and are cost effective.
With the Springs, Shocks/Struts, and the Bushings swapped you should notice a big difference....
Awesome, what other bushings are recommended to replace that are not included in the kit? When I drop my motor back in here next month I'm doing solid motor mounts and a poly trans mount, but is that all the mounts in the entire car?
It looks like if I bought all that you recommend it'd be just about $700, not to bad to totally change the handling.
What are the spring rates of the steeda springs? Would these be ok for aggressive street and drag racing?
What about sway bars, should I look into those, or control arms at all?
Also, I was looking in the bushing section and had a question about the ball joint/tie rod boot kits. I have a 91 foxbody, with stock lca's, but have the newer balljoints in place for my sn95 spindles/brakes, so which balljoint kit do I buy, and same goes for the tie rod end boots.
Swaybars and Control Arms will help... it is really for you to decide... depends on your budget and goals.
If you get Control Arms... then a few of the bushings in the Total Bushing kit I linked you too will be useless... so I would somewhat plan what the future is before you buy the Bushing Kit.
For the Balljoints, you'll want the newer balljoint boots (for whatever year your balljoints actually apply to).... same goes for the Tie-rods...
What is your total budget for this project? I mean sky is the limit with a Mustang.....
Ideally, no more than $1000-$1200 for the suspension/handling side of things. Some guys said I wanted something adjustable for the struts/shocks for drag, but yet have it stiffer for the street.
I understand the planning stuff, but what do I do? The car is torn apart now, no suspension, motor/trans, rear end, nothing, and I'd hate to have to put it back together twice. I guess control arms aren't bad to do, or sways, at a later date.
What are the bushings called that are in the rear end, like for the upper control arms?
Do you sell all the bushings separate, if so what's the cost difference? If its about the same I could just buy what bushings I wanted know, and not the one I know would get replaced when I bought new parts, such as control arms.
