Depends on the tranny. Put synchromax in a toploader and you'll be replacing it quickly.
Amsoil makes a series of different oil that will cover the range of fluids required for different transmissions. Plus, you'll get a warranty directly from Amsoil.

I have a 2003 GT with a Tremec TR-3650 transmission. I just went out and bought four quarts of synthetic Mercon fluid because that's what my owner's manual recommended. I haven't changed the fluid yet. Now I've ran across the following quote from this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremec_TR-3650_transmission
"TREMEC engineers have recommended Texaco-Havoline Dexron III/Mercon Non-Synthetic ATF. The most recent Ford owner's manuals specify 3.17 quarts of a non-synthetic Mercon ATF. There has been a significant amount of confusion regarding the proper capacity and proper type of ATF for the TR-3650 which may have a correlation with a rather large number of complaints about notchy shifting, shift "nibbling", noisy synchros, and grinding gears."
Does anyone have any constructive input? I intend to change my fluid soon and would like to put the right stuff in there.

I used Red Line fluid in mine.It still shifts harder when cold but you shouldn't be hammering a cold engine anyway.

I'd like to see where Tremec engineers made a recommendation for non-synthetics. The factory filled 'er up with synthetic in the tranny and rear end....[&:]
