Ok, after reading this WHOLE thread, and not seeing my question asked, it's time for me to ask it...
Is it true that the law will give you 5 m.p.h. over the speed limit? I mean, as long as you're not doing anything stupid, or don't look suspicious, they'll let you go 5 above, right?

Depends on the department and the system they use. Some purge warnings after a set period of time. others keep them indefinately. It doesn't mean that it would be used against you or even used at all...It's just a record that you had police contact.
I'm sure again it would depend on the system, but from your experience does it say what the warning was given for, or just that you received one?
It shows everything. The date, the time, the officer's name, the warning given, the driver info, car info, even teh name of the dispatcher who entered the info. BUT for most agencies here, that information is internal...meaning that once you cross the town line and get stopped by a different cop, he isn't going to know about previous contacts unless they contact the other agency to see if you have any history with them.
We can search records of other departments on the computer, and we can always call any of them...but that's almost always used for criminal investigations and not for simple traffic stops.

If you pull someone and are able to tell that they were for a fire company, army, or another police station, you give them a break usualy or no?
And do cops actually get under a car to check for cats? Or do they just say its to loud fix it.
It depends on why they were pulled over. People in those prefessions should know very well the risks of not obeying the law and still choose to do so. If I pull someone over and the first thing they do is flash a badge or military ID expecting to get out of something, then shame on them. I wont say i'll give them a break, i just understand that their job requires them to have a good driving record, same with truckers, delivery drivers, etc. I take that into consideration before i go writing tickets. I dont really want to get someone fired from their job over a traffic ticket.
Ive never climbed under a car to chack for cats. I could care less if they're there or not. That will be handled at inspection time.

I will usually go around 10 over. Speedos can be calibrated wrong or get a few miles off over time and the person might not even know theyre speeding. I also look at the road that were on. If its downhill ill take that into consideration also.

the law gives you 0 MPH over the limit. That's why it's called a speed "limit." and not a "suggested speed."
That being said, it coems down to individual officer discretion. Often, it is up to the individual officer to determine what speed he will stop cars at, give warnings for, etc.
I cant speak for everyone out there, but most cops that I know are a , lot more liberal than you think. I know that I wouldn't stop for anything less than 10 MPH over the limit and I wouldne even think about writing a speeding ticket for anything less than 15 MPH over the limit. And 15 MPH was the low end for my tickets.... I wouldnt write for anything less than that and to get a ticket for only gonig 15 MPH over the limit, you had to be doing something REALLY dumb.

there are some really cool cops on here i wish there was more of u around here.
do u have any idea why i was targeted so much in my old mustang? i always tried to obey all the laws because of how much i was followed
If i see a nice car, i might want to take a look at it and hear it. I catch myself doing this on patrol and when im off. Im sure some people think im following them because i want to stop them, but that usually not the case.

Only once have I ever used the "I'm a cop" thing, but it wasn't to get out of a ticket. Every other time I have been stopped, I just act normal and try to make them feel as safe as possible (lights come on, hands on steering wheel, wait to get license and registration until tehy ask, then tell them where it is as I reach for it.)
Now here's the one reason why I had to pull the "cop" card on one occasion (last summer.) I was being pulled over in my beautiful supercharged 5.0 . No big deal. He comes up and asks for my license, registration, and insurance, as usual. So I get my license out of my wallet. I was keeping my registration and insurance in the center colsole. Just as I was going to get it, I stopped and realized, "Oh ****."...
I had gone to the range earlier in the day and I had my glock in the center console on top of my other stuff, lol. So I had to stop and say "just to let you know, my registratin is in the center console, but I have my duty weapon in there as well." Then he asked and I showed him my police ID. It wasn't a major offenese that he stopped me for, and I only did it so I wouldnt get shot when he sees me reaching for a gun, lol.

Well, I always do 5 over, sometimes 10 over on the interstate, and if I see a police or trooper or something I don't slow down, cause I figure they're more likely to pull you over if you slow down than if you just maintain your speed. Also, if you see a sportsbike, and they're doing 30-40 over (around 100 on the interstate) would you mess with them?

LoL, ever had a situation where you seem like you are following someone but you realyl arent? I know that I've had situations like that before. They turn down 3 or 4 weird side streets in a row and I go down teh same route right behind them. I know they think I am following them but in reality, I just had to go that way for routine patrol anyway, lol.

Yep Had that happen a few months ago. Funny thing is that the people pulled into the house right beside where I needed to be. I pulled up right in front of their driveway so i wouldnt be directly in front of the suspect house. They both got out of the car with ID in hand. After the call was over, I talked to them again and we all had a good laugh about it.

Usually we just radio ahead. Most agencies work very well with surrounding agencies. They have to get off some exit or stop somewhere.
