Simply put, it is the cop's job to worry about the safety of a stop's location, not the person being stopped.
i completely disagree with this statement 110% I'm responsible for my own safety more than anyone else on this planet! Say your driving at night a crown vic pulls up behind you, lights up the cherries, you pull over they aren't a cop and in fact impersonating one robbing etc! chances are you will be alot safer if he area is well lit and other citizens are around.
Like I said before, Police impersonators create the ultimate catch 22. If you do stop immediately and it is a dark, out of the way area, there is a very, very, VERY remote chance that you may be in danger of being in danger of being the victim of an impersonator. If you do not stop immediately, you are going to make the Officer feel threatened because he will not know why you are not stopping. How is he to know you are not digging for a weapon or planning an attack? That, BTW, is much more common than robberies stemming from Police impersonators. Not to mention, you are committing another traffic violation by not yielding.
If the area you are in is experiencing an "Outbreak" of impersonators, then the Police in the area will most likely be much more understanding if you offer your nervousness as an excuse for not immediately stopping. If not, you are rolling the dice.

I had never heard of that before, I know it's something stupid anyway, but as a college student, sometimes you have to do everything possible to get to class on time.
LOL, what? I'm a college student and I don't even try at all to get to class on time. As a college student you should be trying to do everything possible to not get to class on time. Or get there drunk at least.
First year?
Anyway, as long as you signal going into the parking lot and follow all road signs and stuff, I can't see how that would be illegal at all?
Nah man I'm a junior, but some of my professors are real dicks about being late.
I have a flowmaster exhaust on my 73. It sets off car alarms in the parling ramp where I work. I was told by my neighbor a retired officer, that most cops wouldn't pull me over for the noise because I'm 50+ and driving an old mustang. They actually appreciate the older cars. But they would pull me over if I was 25 and driving a rice burner. Too?

Forgive me for asking this again if its already been asked somewhere...but here it goes.
This question pertains to rolling through yellow-turning red stop lights. How often do you pull over people runing through these lights? I personally have not gotten pulled for this, but I was told by a judge that you can avoid getting this by tapping your breaks as you go through it because you are showing intent to stop but unable to do so safley in time. Does that make any sense? I cant remember the exact wording, it was a good longgg time ago that I was told this. Any amount of truth to this? Just out of curiosity. Im assuming its a defense to be used against getting this ticket? But I dont personally think it would hold up....but what do I know? lol
Im in Iowa...and I have a missile ordinance against me. What exactly does this mean I cant do / have? I understand the laws are most likely different state to state, but anything I can find out about it through here? Like length of time, restrictions...so on. Any help would be great, thanks a bunch guys.
On a side note...thanks for doing what you guys do. Kudos to all officers.

If you enter the intersection AFTER the light turns red you are guilty. If it changes while you are in the intersection you are safe. As for taping your brake, sounds like you have a bad reaction time, not intent to stop. Thats kind of like stabbing someone then putting the knife down and saying I really intended not to.

Tx law states that if a vehicle legally enters an intersection, then it can legally exit that intersection. As long as your front wheels are across the white line before it turns red you're legal. You cant speed up to beat the light, thats also a violation. If the light is red when your wheels cross that line, then you've ran the red light and can be stopped.
I usually dont pull someone over unless its realy obvious that they ran the light. Even then, if it doesnt seem to cause too much of a problem I wont bother them. I'll just follow them for a while, checking to see if they do anything else.
I've never heard of tapping the brakes. If you cant stop safely then you should continue through the intersection. I have no idea what a missle ordinance is, must be something unique to your state.

Thanks to both of you for clearing that up. I wasnt sure what the actual law states regarding that and not sure I heard the judge correctly when he mentioned it. Anywho, interesting stuff.
As for the missile ordinance, it might be, ill have to check on that some more, curious if any of you had dealt with it before. When I got hit with it, they were claiming it was an "act of terrorism" and it was something new I guess. I think its a city thing...not sure though.
Whats the Law on turning Signals? And Loud Exhaust?
Recently i was tagged with 2 tickets
1st said amplified Muffler... there was no sound measuring instrument used. 2nd said "Tail lights not visible" he said my turning signals are illegal i have lx tail lights and teh turning signals flash white. but the ticket doesn't seem like its very specific
when i go to court should i just say my tail lights work and he never did a sound test on my car?
also sorry if this has been asked before, But why is it that cops never seem to use there turn signal. Its kind of irritating..
Well I am definitely guilty of this on a daily basis, but when I do fail to use a turn signal, it is 99% because I didn't know I was turning onto a particular street, or a driveway, or parking lot, until I was already turning. This happens when I am either just driving randomly, zig zagging through the area, I happen to see something of interest off of the road that I am on, have a last minute thought of a place to check, etc.

The law on turn signals? Use them Per law here, and most likely everywhere else, you are required to use an electronic or mechanical (Your arm/hand is acceptable if you know the correct signals, but few do) signal whenever you make a turn or change lanes.
Defective exhaust and similar tickets are different everywhere you go. As I have said in this thread many times, I don't like them because they are very subjective, what is too loud to one person may not be to another. From what I've seen very few jurisdictions require any sort of sound measurement to be taken.
I don't know about your second ticket, but do know that white turn signals in the rear are illegal many places.
Many jurisidictions are starting to post their laws/ordinances online, if you can hunt them down. If the ticket came from a large department or larger municipality you may do some checking up to see exactly how the laws (And use the ordinance/charge code numbers off the tickets, not the written description) are written.

what are the signals? i was thinking about that the other day cause a lot of the trailers at work have less than functional lights. arm down at a 90* is stop, straight out left is turn left, up at a 90* for right?

Hell I don't know. Rule of thumb, the very, very few times I see someone without operating lights that sticks their arm out the window, I just assume the signals are correct and leave them alone
Ok, googled a picture:

What I've always been told is that you just put your hand straight out. All these other signals asumes that everyone on the road knows what they mean. Its just confusing. Admit it, If you saw any one of those signals it wouldn't be clear what the rider/driver meant.

I really, really wish officers would hang the bastards out to dry that run red lights. I was almost tboned this weekend with my daughter in the car......have had two people I know tboned in the last year, and had a buddy killed a long time ago for the same thing. Friggin light runners piss me off to say the least.
also, not quite... there are restrictions, emphasis mine:
"In Terry v. Ohio, the Supreme Court ruled that a person can be stopped and frisked by a police officer based on a reasonable suspicion. Such a detention does not violate the Fourth Amendment prohibition on unreasonable searches and seizure. In Hiibel v. Sixth Judicial District Court of Nevada the court further established that a state may require, by law, that a person identify himself or herself to an officer during a stop. An arrest is not permitted based on reasonable suspicion; probable cause is required for an arrest. Further, a person is not required to answer any other questions during a Terry stop, and the detention must be brief."

If I see someone run the light and almost take someone out it would be their ass. I wont let them off if they come close to causing a crash.
I work nights most of the time, when theres not a lot of traffic. If someone runs a light at 3am when theres not another car in sight, I wont stop them immediately. I'll follow them with my video on trying to catch them making any other violations. If they do happen to be DWI, then the more video evidence I have the better my case will be.
After I read that post I realized it sounded like I go easy on them. Thats not what I was trying to say. I was trying to say is that if its hard to tell if they ran the light or not and doesnt cause a problem, I will give the person the benefit of the doubt.

not quite, an officer only needs to have reasonable suspicion to affect a traffic stop. this is a lower standard then probable cause.
quote:
ORIGINAL: rmtaylor78 cops have to have some type of probable cause to pull you over.
In other words "anything goes"? We really are turning into a police state if thats OK.
No man, it's not "Anything goes" at all. Tim obviously spent a few minutes throwing together some links for you, they can be summed up with the definition of reasonable suspicion, per the Wikipedia link: Reasonable suspicion is a legal standard in United States law that a person has been, is, or is about to be, engaged in criminal activity based on specific and articulable facts and inferences.

I have a question 4 u. This may have been asked but this thing is way too long to read every page. How illegal are blacked out tail lights? Mine are kinda custom painted/clearcoated and they are probably a little too dark. They look good (lol) and I'm not necessarily talking about mine alone but, they make covers for these things and I see some BLACKED out taillights. I have tested mine in the day light and at night and are plenty visible. I haven't gotten any flack from the popo but my brother has for the same thing. What is your take on the situation?
