There are blackout kits and special paint available to tint tail lights.
I would think window film would be too dark and maybe too difficult depending on the shape of the lense.

Consider checking other cars in your area.  There may be a "legal limit" for this.

go to autobadges.com ...they have the "tail light tint" you are referring to...im getting it myself for my 03' gt...they have a fog light tint kit, a 3rd brake light tint kit, headlights, tail lights, and the rear side markers..in 50% tint or blackout tint...im getting the 50 % smoked look for mine...its under the decal or vinyl tab on their website...good luck...

You can also check on eBay.  I got vinyl blackouts for the headlights and taillights all for $40, shipped.  Look around and you'll find what you are looking for.

You could try, but it would probably last a week.  Window tint goes inside the glass remember.

For our body styles, you will need to get a spray on tint. That is the best/only decent way to do it for 96-98 taillights because the roundness of the taillights.

I went to a hobby store and got the spray tint you use for model cars. It was five bucks and I did my trucks tails black, but you can just put on a few coats to make them smoked, it works good just clean them really well first and it will stick.
