Since I live on a busy two lane highway, and have a yard full of suburbans, boats with for sale signs on them, trucks, my hotrods everywhere, and the guy who used to live here 4 years ago bought and sold old cars and parts, I constantly get people stopping in and asking about my cars. One guy nearly got a rifle in his nose because I stroll out of the house and he is sitting in my 72 Formula, looking around inside it.. He looked at me like I had a third eye growing out of my head when I told him I was already offeerd $30k for it and that is isnt for sale..
Driving the 70 GTO, even with rattle can paint and dents everywhere, I get people starting conversations at stop lights, yelling they love my car as the drive by at intersections, and leaving notes on it whenever its parked somewhere.
The 67 Cougar got 3 hits, people wanted it because they knew someone who had one or they had one a long time ago.. Well this is my Cougar from a long time ago and no it isnt for sale.
The buddy of mine who towed the 65 GTO up here on a trailer last year told me 4 people asked if it was for sale, mind you this is a rusty hulk with no drivetrain nor interior, it is also missing the rear glass and the drivers side window, has 4 flat tires and looks like a 4th grader painted it with his fingers.
With the Pontiacs I always get, "does it have a 350 small block?" Then they get the third eye in the forehead look... That is a nasty insult, although most people dont know it. Just try to explain it is a GTO and not a Chevelle to someone who had one just like it a long time ago..
As for the Mustang, one guy in a clapped out Dodge Dakota pulled up next to the trailer while it was being towed to the shop, he paced the trailer, slowing and speeding up while looking at the car, then he pulls up next to me and give a thumbs up. Apparently he appreciates rust..
As a matter of fact, I had a guy follow me for 5 miles only to tell me he loved the car then turned around and went the way he came. I really love when a cpl is walking down the street and the guy or the girl break thier necks trying to get that 2nd glance. I get people at gas stations that wanna talk shop. I get the same "Man you just dont that many 71-73 convertibles that look like this, its fine"! Its fun I enjoy it :) I get people of all ages that stare, I like all the older Mustangs But you really do not see many of the 71-73 mustang convertibles, they just wernt that sought after... click on the pick for a full sized view....
I get a lot of thumbs-up from guys when I drive it, have had a few guys ask if it belongs to my husband or boyfriend and they got the dreaded 'third eye stare" ala Thumpin!
One of the best conversations I had was about a month ago, 50 degree day, so decided to take it out of the garage, check the battery tender (fine) and drive it around a bit to flatten out the tires, etc. I went into Dunkin Donuts for an iced coffee and was standing in a long line, every so often looking out front at my car, when I noticed a woman in line in front of me staring at me. I looked away but she kept staring, so I looked at her, and she said, "you can always tell a Mustang chick." Turns out she, too, has Mustangs, though hers are race cars. We spent quite a while chatting about older cars while the folks in line listened, including an old lady who began to tell us about her first T-bird!
Young kids tend to ask if it's stock. A few guys have asked how I got a year of manufacture plate.
comments are okay, but I get a lot of dumb questions. Like when folks ask if I got a 289. I say no it's got a 302. Then they try to get all smart arsed and say, don't you mean a 390? No it's my car and I know what's in it. I park the 67 in front of my house (you can see it through the living room window) It sits in the same place everyday. So for a week I see this guy walk by it (I was on leave). And every day that he walks by, he walks by slower and slower. One day he walks by and almost stops. 10 minutes later he's back with his little kid (I guess he didn't want to look like a weirdo or something). He stops this time and starts looking hard at it. Getting on the ground and looking underneath. I'm just rolling by now. Then he looks inside pressing his head up against the window...(I'm on my way outside now). Then he has the balls to open the hood to take a look (I slowly walk up to him). I yell ,"WHATCHA DOIN?" Man he jumped off the ground and wrapped his head on the underside of the hood. What an ass!!

It is a blast to own a classic car. The ooh and aahs and the traditional I had one of those. I know school is important but if at all possible dont sell it you may regret it. they are getting so high in value, good chance you will never be able to replace it. I have had my ss camaro for 27 years. Although for awhile I just parked her didn't have the funds but now she is ripping up the roads again. My husband and I both are into cars, he has two mustangs and a 1970 Challenger . Hopefully you can find another way . Good Luck

Hey Pammie, I want to thank you again, I just got my T-Lock, and it's awesome, what a great addition.
BTW, great stories guys, and yes, although nice and polite comments from people is cool, sometimes you do get the occassional crazy who asks the most insipid and inane questions, I guess we have to take the good with the bad...lol.
I had a knuckle-head approach me at a Mustang car show He said that my car was a fine lookin machine, He then went on to add if I removed the fan and replaced it with electric and di this and that I could add even more HP!! I politely asked him if he was showing his car too? He said no he and a friend where just there to look, but that he was going to do all that to his when he buys one...
I asked him if it ever occured to him that some people might like having a stock ride? I swear (deer in head lights look) I asked him if he had seen the 500 hp new mustang two rows over? Never saw him again, I dont really know if there was a 500hp mustang there either.

im in seattle washington. i was figuring if i did sell it maybe 13k. not sure tho what a good price for it would be tho
Yeah 13 grand is about right. That's what I would think mine is worth, and it's close to the same condition as yours. However, if you sell it for that, you won't be able to buy it back for that in a few months. These suckers are really climbing in value nowadays.

yet another reason y i shouldnt sell. course i show my parents a bunch of your guys comments and they just fire back "your on a mustang website, what the hell do u think they are going to say?"
Surprisingly, not very people react to the PC when driving. At shows, or if I'm getting gas, or someone asks, then I get lots of nice comments. But I figure that the car is so rare it gets more "???" than "!!!" A Shelby or nice convertible have enough production so most people are familiar with them and react strongly when they see one. But there were only 190 PC coupes, and almost all of them had their identity stripped right away back in '64 because the owners wanted a Mustang like the ones on TV. Therefore, they have almost no recognition outside the Mustang world.
Some cool reactions: at my 2nd show, I was parked next to a guy who believed it was a clone until the end of the show. Driving back from San Diego, a car pulls up next to me and a gal almost falls out the rear window trying to take a picture at 70 mph. However, a typical reaction was when Jay Leno was cruising down the line at local show and stopped long enough to mumble "Hmm, Pace Car..." then proceeded to go bonkers over my buddy's '65 K-GT fastback two cars over.

Well being car people we know what they mean to us. Some people consider a car to be basic transportation, they are the ones who drive minivans and SUVs. They are also the ones who more often than not collide with out cars after we have put hundreds and thousands of hours into them, then cant figure out why we get so upset and want to strangle them over a car. The common statement is "its just a car" and "you can get another one just like it later on, they are a dime a dozen."
To us car people, our ride is an extension of ourselves, it is much more than basic transportation. People always say sell that old car and get something newer it will cost you less money. Well figure in a $200-$500 car payment, and then between $150 and $700 a month for insurance (depends on how bad your record is), so figure $800 a month for the newer car including fuel and stuff. How is that saving money?
If you are going to walk, thats one thing. If you need to store it for a while, that can be done as well. Just because you need money right now doesnt mean you need to sell everything you own. All that will do is require you to buy all that stuff again, and you will be in debt even farther at that point.
Once you have something special, you hang onto it, because in 20 years you will wish you still had it if you sell it. it takes 20-25 years after high school to be able to afford to do what ever you like with your first car. In that time the value will go up considerably on old rides like ours.
Car people get it. Those who arent car people have no clue what I just said.

i tell ppl that im gonna be selling my car and they just stare at me and are like "i dont see you in a 4cyl car. it just doesnt make sense". i like the idea of getting more that 20mpg+ but.....argh its so hard. damn i need to hold on to my baby. btw my gf laughs when i call her my baby along with my car. she feels i put my car b4 her but shes a stang lover too and will support whatever decision i make. she feels that i should only have one "baby" in my life but she understands
I know what you mean about being car people. My cars each have their own little pet names and personalties lol. It really upsets me to hear someone say."well it is just a dumb old car." They dont understand the blood sweat and tears and hundreds of hours that some people put into them. Some of the cars we have owned for many years and have gone up in value dramatically. But I dont have interest in selling any at this time. I understand that ordinary people think this is foolish but I am just a car nut
Thumpin, What's wrong with drivin SUV's?. I love my durango, almost as much as my mustang (the hemi helps a bit). Arrrgghh, My mustang is not just another car. It's THE car I was dreaming of since I was five or so. 289, I know what you mean, my wife was standing next to me when I was telling this person there are only 3 things I love/care about in this world (I was crushing one of my Airmen and she just happened to be there). My little girl, my mustang, and my wife. Later she asked me if That was the order I actualy think of them in and I just winked and said, "no comment"
Yeah we are on a mustang forum, but go to any classic car forum and they'll tell you the same thing. Don't sell, well they may tell you to trade it for whatever classic car forum type you are on at the time. But I garuntee they will tell you not to get rid of it for a new(ER) car.

My 72 only gets driven on the weekends, otherwise I purchased a Toyota Prius hybrid for my wife (she calls me the unoficial sales guy, like the guy for wendys).
I bought the car in 2004, then the high gas prices hit. The car has the interior room of a camry, I drove the car from Orlando Fl. to Bryan Tx on $22.00 and that was cruising at 75 - 85 mph. the car goes 0-60 in 9 seconds and has a top speed of 109 mph. What more could a person ask for? It cost me 26k, has an 8yr-100k warranty one the electrical side and a 7yr-75k on the mechanical side. My wife used to fill up her chevy twice a week, now she fills up once every two wks.
Note her hybrid car came standard with pwr lks, pwr wndw, keyless entry, cruise, am/fm/cd w 6 spkrs, ac. What does this have to do with the price of tea in china? It leaves more money for the mustang & in our pockets
PS. anyone going to the ford & mustang show at waterford lakes in Orlando fl.? on Feb 24th?

along the lines of what CJ said.. I have other cars for mileage and getting around. You can pick up a cheap beater for school and give the stang a rest. There is nothing wrong with having a $200 car that is dependable and gets decent mileage. But to trade the Mustang, a GTO, or any of my other cars for it.. I think not.. 'In addition to' rather than 'in place of'. No law says you can only own one car. go find a beater.. mine is a $250 97 Intrepid.. :) its the only thing that gets driven in the winter, other than rusty trucks.
A friend of mine has a #1 condition 1973 chevy camaro z/28 this car is a true trailer honey... He was concidering selling the car to get a loan.. I almost fainted... I talked him out of it as he would never afford to buy another one like it.... He wanted to race the mustang , I just luaghed and said NO WAY.
