I love black on a muscle car - makes it look like a total street cleaner...

From what I have read it doesn't fade at all - if it does then you just sand the area down a bit to prep it and then paint it again just like you did the first time. If you follow the link (somewhere on this thread) to the YeeHaa69Charger fellow who started all this with his orange '69 Charger then you'll also see a VW Bug that he painted something like 12 years ago and it still looks like it was done just yesterday.

if u use a fine grit like 1000 and above with enough water it takes off just enough to create a smooth surface.

Wow!

You are already painting your pony with this method???

Same as you would before putting down any paint.... do some sanding/roughing up... degrease.. all that good stuff.  If your paint is in good shape you should be able to paint over it... get rid of all rust.... fix your dents... .apparently this will also paint right over bondo.

Nothing sticks to your car like the original paint - fix the dents best as possible so minimal bondo is used, then sand smooth. Wiping the car clean with a prepped cloth is next then get the foam & roller brushes out and go to town. Trick is to make sure you thin it A LOT!

your original color was white right?  if that is your first coat it is way too thick...color sand it with some 400 grit then thin it more for the second coat

Yeah, and for every sand and paint session, keep increasing the grit of the sandpaper, start from 300, and move your way up, 600, 800, 1000, and even up to super ultra fine 2000 if you can find it.

Once the weather gets a bit warmer, I'm going to practice on my 1989 F-150 truck first.

I am in the process of stripping my car and I am going to try this over the next couple days on the trunk lid.  If it doesn't work out then I can always just strip it off with no harm done.

Can someone give me more specifics on how thin the paint should be after adding mineral spirits.  Some kind of ration would be best.

Thanks, I'll try 50/50 and see how it works.  I've got a couple more evenings bringing the decklid into shape and then should be able to get at least 2 coats applied over the weekend.  I'll take pictures throughout and post them with the results.

Make sure to wetsand a lot during coats, very important. Start with 300-400 grit sandpaper, and work your way up to 1000 and more.

I got some extra time last evening and actually finished the deck lid prep and applied the first coat.  This morning I put on the second coat.

I have pictures of the before and after that I will post later today (at work right now).  Perhaps I should start a new thread so let me know what you guys think.

I mixed the mineral spirits (I am using Varsol which the "Paint Experts" at the hardware store said is mineral spirits) at about a 50/50 ratio.  I stirred the mixture and applied with the foam brush.  The brush looks just like those pictured in the post and says it is for use with Melamine and high gloss paints. However, there were a lot of little bubbles in the paint after application, more than I thought there would be.  I was then wondering if I thinned the paint too much, or the roller wasn't dense enough.  Did anyone else have that experience?

This morning it looks like all those bubbles eventually burst, but I can see where the larger ones were in the paint.  Actually in those spots I can see the bare metal.  Overall it is a very uneven finish.

I applied the second coat and again a lot of bubles in the paint.  I then left for work and will check again this evening and report.

Any feedback on whether my experience is typical would be appreciated.

Did  you shake your paint?  Apparently it's a no-no... stir only.  Shaken paint will give you those bubbles and the paint must sit a couple weeks in the can to let them bleed out.

Hrmmm... if I remember the technique right your supposed to roll the paint... then go over it with on of the small brushes very lightly to get rid of the bubbles.  Did you do that?

I went back to the original post on the Mopar forums and I think the problem relates to the Varsol.  The original poster said not to use Varsol but the straight mineral spirits.  So much to listening to the people at the hardware store who say "it's the same thing".  I'll stop by Canadian Tire tonight on the way home and get the real thing and try again.  I also think I may have thinned it too much because it was very thin.

Overall though, I must say the results look better than I would have thought possible before reading the post.  It was also nice to see a nice glossy panel after doing so much sanding.

I'll make some adjustments and I am sure it will be even better.

As for consistency of the paint (ie how it should look when thinned) this guy has painted the method quite a bit and he's made a short quicktime video showing his consistency.

Here's some step by steps for both methods that a guy put together after reading all the posts.

Rust-Oleum Method

Brightside Method
