general questions on cobras

sahlberg -> general questions on cobras (1/28/2007 4:33:17 PM)

well...i'm looking to get either a 99' or an 01' cobra. this will be my first car.... i'm 14 now and will be buying one in a year.    (my parents will match whatever i have to put down on the car...i have 6,000, they give 6,000=12,000)

now, is there anything i should watch out for when going used?
how much hp do the stock cobras have?
and anything else you would like to throw in here would be greatly appreciated...thanks

the 01 cobra i think has 320 hp stock dn bout 99

snakeman4life -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/28/2007 5:27:03 PM)

Both years are rated at 320hp,but the '99s had a huge recall[the reason there wasn't a '00 Cobra] because they didn't make the advertised 320hp.The recall consisted of reworking the intake, exhaust, and computer and after being fixed they made the full 320hp.I would assume that most all '99s have been fixed but it is something to look out for.The '01s had the full 320hp from the factory and had a few updates over the '99,the IRS was a little stronger with 31[vs. 28]axles and different bushings to reduce wheelhop a little, they also have a stronger transmission[tremec 3650 vs. T45 for the '99].The interior is also a little different with a 6 disc in dash changer for the '01 as well as much better seats. The bottom line is go with whichever one you can get a better deal on,either will make you a hell of a first car[too much of one if you ask me][;)]

sahlberg -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/28/2007 6:49:33 PM)

yeah....well, my dad was cool with it until we talked about it with my mom......i'm gonna get a big 4x4 lift it and then when i'm 18, get a cobra....thanks!

Evil04C -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/28/2007 7:20:33 PM)

Have FUN with gas, and tires...and when **** breaks. Have fun with that.

sahlberg -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/28/2007 7:42:16 PM)

umm...ok?

italia18 -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/28/2007 11:42:11 PM)

dunno what he meant either..

Anyway that sucks that your mom is apprehensive.  I got my cobra when I was 16.  Did all the work on her myself, I'm 18 now and I can look at it and say I've got something I can be proud of.  Once you get one, after looking at it for the first three days, driving it around, and pickin up mad girls in it.. youll NEVER want anything else hahaha.

Maybe they'll change their mind and let you sell the 4x4 early.

Only thing that sucks about owning a cobra in your mid teens is that insurance rapes you.  Even under my dads name I was, and still am, paying alot and I have no tickets to speak of... yet.

PWORLDSTANG -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 2:55:00 AM)

Damn, your're 14 years old and are thinking about a COBRA! ..And have 6K saved up?.. Keep up the good work kid! Lol.

midnightsnake83 -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 3:29:20 PM)

Atleast you're not getting into ricers like alot of kids your age and you have the dough saved up!!!  Don't take this the wrong way, but your young and stupid.   I was too and so was everybody else.  When I got my 99, I didnt know how to drive it and now I have a nice crease right up the door from a mailbox and no driverside sideskirt.  Another thing, HP!  320 hp is alot for even me to handle sometimes.  You could even get a GT,  Its got less hp and tq, but atleast your not in a 6er. You can find a good GT for $12k.  I got my snake for $15k.

sahlberg -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 3:59:10 PM)

well....i talked to my mom....and she said alright!!!! she said as long as i dont get tickets for speeding, donuts, burnouts, etc. its alright and it proves that i'm responsible...i still  have a while til' i actually get the cobra but now i can start reading and doing research on it lol...

i will admit, the cobra will be a LOT of car for my first vehicle but i'm pretty sure i'll be responsible with it lol...

and, does anybody know what a stock 2001 cobras 1/4 mile times would be? (about) thanks

midnightsnake83 -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 5:44:15 PM)

Responsible he says!  Thats what you said to your mom to let you get the car.  I will gaurentee you when you get the car, someone will want to race you and you'll give in.  That or in my case, no one will want to race you because you have a cobra.  The 1/4 mile times depend on whos driving the car.

sahlberg -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 6:08:33 PM)

lol, well around here, theres definately competition....theres 2 GTs all fixed up, a fast azz supra, my good friend actually drives a 460whp evo.....and theres a lot of other nice cars.....i'll end up racing just wont get caught LOL...'i hope'....
well, say the shifting is almost perfect, and its floored, and it doesnt break loose in the start.....what times....anywhere in the 13s? i have no idea what so ever.... i'm used to fast pickups lol

midnightsnake83 -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 8:27:30 PM)

Well you said almost perfect, which makes sense.  What kind of shifting are you doing?  Double-clutch shifting or shifting without letting off the gas?  Each person had their shifting style.  There's really not much of a time difference, but if you got really good...maybe high 12's/low 13's.  Thats completely stock!  Now you do what I have "plans" for...you're talking 10's maybe...MAYBE very high 9's.  Of course overall weight helps when its as low as you can get it.  So dont go deleting your back seat, lighter wheels, and a bunch of CF everywhere, but then put 200 lbs of stereo stuff in your trunk like those ricers!

sahlberg -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 8:41:09 PM)

yeah.....i really wanted to cobra because you can make them REALLY fast besides the fast they're fast already lol.....i cant believe high 12s, low 13s....stock, thats freaking awsome! i do have plans on fixing up the interior and stuff.....and i will defiantely have a sub in the trunk or , atleast somewhere in the car...since, my parents think its too fast now, i cant make it even faster before i even drive so i'm not going to put any money into the engine...

i'll fix up the exhaust....do some interior work and then buy engine mods but not install them until a while after i drive....

and what exactly is double clutch shifting....my uncle did it sometimes but i never saw what he was exactly doing

midnightsnake83 -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 8:59:36 PM)

Double-clutching is kindof difficult to explain so I'll try my best at this scenerio.  First, know this: when you press in the clutch...the rpms will jump from about 500-1000 like that!   Lets say you're in first getting ready to shift and the gas is floored.  When your rpms reach about 5500-6000 you very quickly press the clutch and let go in about 1/3 of a sec.  Before the rpms go down you'll press the clutch in and shift.  this will keep your rpms high which is where most of the cars power is.  Speed shifting is never taking your foot off the gas but your still pressing the clutch in and shifting.  I would recommend not doing either of these shifts very often!

sahlberg -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 9:03:20 PM)

oh, so double clutch shifting is bad?

midnightsnake83 -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 9:08:25 PM)

When you but a new exhaust  DO NOT get shorty headers!  You might actually lose hp and tq.  Go to this website and read:  www.headersbyed.com/bildbetr.htm   Get long tube headers with less then 4" difference between the longest and shortest tubes and a long collector.  Get 3 in. pipes if you can (they sound better than 2 1/2...deeper and more powerful tone).  Im getting my headers custom made for my car, buying all the piping then adding cats/mufflers.  I'll have different sections with flanges so if I need to replace a cat,  I just unscrew the old one and screw in the new.  Same goes with mufflers, x-pipe, and tips.  Im putting the Roush side exits on mine but not the Roush exhaust system...Flowmaster super 40's! My sh*t's gonna be sick!!!

sahlberg -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 9:11:55 PM)

lol...cool, i'll check that site out.....when i start working on the exhaust, i'm gonna have my uncle help me out because one thing my uncle knew about mustangs was the exhausts.....

is yours turbocharged/supercharged? or do you plan on doing that in the future?

midnightsnake83 -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 9:21:14 PM)

Its not supercharged yet.  You dont "turbo" domestics; you supercharge them.  lol  Its cool  I was dumb when I started on this forum.  But I learned quick...thats why you're here.  I plan on putting a Kenne Bell 9psi intercooled 8-rib S/C (13-21 total psi)  but that means changing my internals  to forged pistons, rods, new suspension.  Yeah...BEAST!!!   Once I get it done, I'll make an owner of a GT 500 cry!

midnightsnake83 -> RE: general questions on cobras (1/29/2007 9:22:27 PM)

I wasnt calling you dumb  so dont read it like that.  You have a clue;  I didnt at all.  But you are here to learn more,  that was my point about you.
