Day 1. Charleston SC to Columbia SC.... 130 something miles.

So we loaded down the 66 and headed out, we plan on being in LA on the 10th of feb. We are going across country to okc then hitting route 66 for the rest of the trip.
The car was so loaded down (we had to drop some stuff off in columbia on way(planned)) that even with the air shocks we got the occasional back fender bump... oh how i hate that sound and the feeling of losing the little bit of rubber each time.
I drove 60 the whole way, and the mustang did well. Only thing was outside of columbia the temp gauge which read fine the whole time inched up to about 3/4 but when i dropped off the gas and back again went back to it's normal place. I'm hoping it's just the fact that it's an old fart gauge.
no coolant overflow, no leaks, the pavement under the car is nice and clean.
Looking good so far even though we have a very long way to go.
We will stop in Atlanta tommorow, we have to drop off stuff for the a.t. (camping gear) for our thru hike in april. Car will be much lighter after we drop off that stuff.
Gas mileage is looking good, maybe 14-18, will know for sure tommorow.

If you dont take a lot of pics on Route 66, then you need to be banned from driving. Your gonna be driving a '66 on the Mother Road and we want pics!

we will be taking lots of pictures. usually we drive to get somewhere, with this trip we are driving for the trip. We would start route 66 up at the begining but we have to drop off some things in atl and dallas so were are taking i-20 to dallas. Once we leave dallas on feb 1st, we will hit the old alignment. so starting the night of the 1st, i'll start posting on my blog and putting pictures online. thanks for all the good wishes.

I took a trip from Texas to Seattle, then down to San Francisco and back to Texas a few years ago.  Then a year later I drove from Texas to Maine and back home.  That old 66 will do it, I guarantee you.  I know you won't get to central Texas because you will just skim the panhandle, but you are certainly welcome to stop by and compare cars.

Day 2 --- We are in atlanta and the weather is cold. we've been spoiled on the island and reality has just set in. haha. we're getting about 14mpg. Not too bad for a fully loaded down car. We have unloaded the car and the car is a bit lighter and has some spring in the rear end.
Our friends told us it will be 18 degrees when we leave, so i will probably have to start warming the car up tonight.
i took a couple of pictures, but don't have my camera handy. I'll have the pictures tommorow.
Thanks for the invite, how central texas are you soaring?

it may add a day to the trip, but may I suggest I10 its a little nicer to look at than 20, oh and then when you get to San Antonio you can take I35 up to Dallas, that way you can stop and say hi to soaring!!  Good luck to you and have fun!!

Sounds fun! How comfortable are those stock seats? Or do you have some aftermarket ones?

Love the postings!  Best of luck on the trip.  Keep it safe and enjoy every spontaneous moment.  Having several cross-country trips under my belt, I know you will have the time of your life!!!

Oh - where is your final destination in Los Angeles - hotel, family, etc.?

Day 3. we are picking up our pace. Atlanta to Vicksburg, MS.
noneventful. we are getting 17.4 mpg and driving at a constant 60mph. Oh, and it was cold in atlanta when we left.

I do want to add that i have run into some really nice newer mustang owners that appreciate the heritage of their car, and it's nice to get the recognition from them of the classic. I never get enough waves, thumbs up, honks, etc. That tight nit community feeling is nice. Reminds me when we drive our TJ the waves and acknlowdegement of other owners just makes you feel good.
To answer some of your questions:

We are going to LA as my wife is going to housesit and work for a friend of hers that is going to hong kong for a couple of months. She will be running the friends vet practice while she is in hong kong.

the stock seats are okay for 100-150 miles at a time.We find we have to stop and stretch, but i wouldn't dare put any seats in to replace the stock seats. Added to that, the lack of cruise control makes it a little extra work for the driver, but it could be worse.

We will be staying in fort worth with my mom for a day to drop off our cats (2) that are being kept in a carrier in the back seat. The cats have been prety good about the trip. I was hoping to stop by either dallas mustang or texas mustang, as i need to replace the passenger side trim panel. The repo piece the previous owner used is cheap and the upholstrey is coming undone from the trim and the chrome had to be pulled off as it came undone. So i was going to go ahead and replace the panel while i was in town.

Sounds like a fun trip.  What part of L.A. will you be in?  It is pretty large area.    BTW, the "Jeep Wave" is pretty much dead here now except from built rig to built rig.

texas mustang will be out of your way if you plan on going west from dallas and not south to 10, but hey it's up to you
