My Corolla used to vibrate just below 70mph...after new tires, balancing & alignment it went away..smooth to 100+mph now..lol..though it takes a while to get there. ;)
When's the last time you had the tires balanced? Just a thought..not sure if that would cause what you are describing, though.

I ONCE HAD A MUSTANG WITH A BAD SHIMMY BETWEEN 70 AND 80 MPH.....IT TURNED OUT THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD RUN NITROUS ON THE CAR WHICH BENT THE AXLES. ONCE I REPLACED THE AXLES THE SHIMMY MAGICALLY DISAPEARED FOR A WHILE. EVENTUALLY I HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE CAR ONE PIECE AT A TIME AT A COST OF OVER $100,000 JUST TO MAKE SURE THE SHIMMY STAYED AWAY.

so since a guy ran nitrous it bent the axles huh?? u can have just as much power w/ just motor or w/ superchargers or turbos as u can w/ nitrous. but it was the fault of having nitrous that bent the axles.... weird...

i own that 1.8T that jaybird claims to beat and i have to tell you that he definitely doesn't tear me to pieces.....but neither car is the clear winner......iy is on a launch by launch basis.....until we both build our motors and then i will win.
and i have to tell you that a 2002 1.8T will hand a 2002 VR6 it's a** in a race, it's not even close.
Well the problem with those damn FWD cars is if you get close to 300hp your gonna start breaking axles. My friend had a CRX with a superchager (still pretty slow when racing my other friends Mustang) and he broke axles if he launched to hard. Ohh, and I would like to see your 1.8 do teh 1/4 mile in under 13 secs!

back to the original shimy question, I would definitly start checking air pressure in tires and getting them balanced right, if it still shimming work your way in (bent rims?,axles?etc.

To clarify the situation, this data is straight from the car and driver website
The following is a writeup comparing the VW v-6 to the 1.8L
"The V-6 is 0.2 second quicker than the 1.8T at 10-mph increments through 50. At 60 mph, it's 0.4 second ahead and extends its advantage to half a second through the quarter-mile."
The following are stats on the 1.8L
Displacement. . . . . . . . . . .109 cu in, 1781cc
My (completely stock) 2002 Dodge Dakota Sport with a 4.7L will do the quarter in 15.0 all day long with consistancy!!! Imagine that, a pickup beating the HELL out of a "Bad" little 1.8 VW.
