Default intake restriction?

ok, so ive heard some rumors around that say that there is a screen inside the intake tube behind a sensor of some sort.. My friends say that if i took the screen out, then i would get more power.. i am curious to see.. but dont want to waste my time if it doesnt do anything.. is all this true?

the only one that i can think of is the maf sensor screen. WE took my buddys off his 99 gt, it restricts about 35% airflow coming trough the intake is what i read somewhere, i dont believe i have one on my 99
