I feel the GTO is a great machine, it has things us Mustang owners would like to see in our vehicles. I especially liked the instrument cluster with the animated information screen.  I saw on a video when this guy went past 90MPH it started flashing and telling him to slow down. I thought that was cool. Its the little things that people appreciate about the GTO, which made people buy it. It must hurt for current GTO owners because hardly anybody will make new aftermarket accessories for it.  This is good news for Ford, since the Mustang is now the only affordable muscle car still around.. the corvette went another route to $50K street...  and its been happy ever since.. so.. heres an article about the death of the goat...

http://www.autoblog.com/2006/02/21/gm-officially-dumps-the-pontiac-gto/

That article hits it square on target. Too expensive for the muscle crowd and too GM for the rest. It looked like a Pontiac Grand Am/Prix on steroids   Some called it a 'sleeper' In this case I'd call it a synonym for hidesous.

That and since the RWD lineup in GM is switching to the Holden designed Zeta platform, they will still have the same frame and engine linesups, just under Camaro and possibly the....TransAm!?!

The new GTO was an embarasment to the heritage of the Muscle car and the original goats, what was Chevrolet thinking by using that ugly body and Aussie platform, yeah the engine was awesome, but the body was terrible.

Don't forget that the GM "Styling Department" has mentally left the building years ago...

I don't think there has been a "good" looking GM other than the Vette.

Avalanche
Cobalt
STS
CTS
and the super sexy AZTEC!
the list goes on...

How are they selling these freakin' things!

I wouldn't be caught dead in one of those!

SOHC

You're so Ford fanboy it's just silly my V6 driving friend.  I'll give you the Aztec and Avalanche are brutal.  But the CTS-V or the STS-V are ugly cars?

And let's look at Fords list of ugly cars recently.

Edge
Flex
Explorer Sport Trac
And who can forget the Lincoln Blackwood?

I am a true Ford owner. That's all I buy.

And, your right the CTS-V is not ugly, let me correct myself, it's FUGLY!!!

It has a face only its Psychologist can love, and an ass so big that rappers would have a field day writing songs about it!!!

Not only does it have a LOT of "Junk in the Trunk" the rest of it should be scrapped too.

I am not saying that Ford has hit a homerun with every model either, but each model Ford comes up with at least has ONE "good side"...

These Chevy's are hideous.

Lemme stop laughing for a minute...

I mean really, what is this symbol supposed to be? Oh wait, nobody knows, keep em guessing.

At least I know my pony is a V6, and I'm not embarrassed to drive it, I know it is decent looking.

When a 4 door Honda looks better than a $56,000 Cadillac, GM should just give up.

Looks are subjective.  And there is an ass for every seat.  I happen to not be a fan of the S197 Mustangs.  So I bought a GTO.  I personally think they look better.  But again, it's just my opinion.  I don't see how you think GM is failing at producing cars, because you think they're all ugly.  Some peoples taste is different than yours.  Thats all.

GTO's tear mustangs a new asshole,They bury the charger. They are just brute power...If you have ever owned or driven a true muscle car of the late 60's you would appreiate the GTO. I suggest you go test drive one, then after you peel yourself out of the seat come back here and post.

"Brute power"?

A blown and injected 427 SOHC V8 is brute power.

I drove a 429CJ Torino for 15 years so I know horsepower. Real "Old School". Holley 750, Hooker headers, cam, you know..

Only thing it couldn't pass was a gas station.

I appreciate the new Mustang because it is a "driver's car".

It is sharp looking, great handling, good on gas and fun to drive. Even has a big trunk.

Even the 4 door I drove was powered by a 390 Marauder.

I don't need to have the most horsepower on the block.

Horsepower doesn't make you cool or better than anyone else.

I certainly wouldn't sacrifice looks for power.

As far as tearing "mustangs a new asshole", let's see now... Camaro, dead... GTO, dead...

Performance isn't everything.

Looks like a stock V6 Mustang wasted the GTO.

I like my Mustang, you don't. OK. I can accept that.

I'll bet my insurance is cheaper though!

I don't know why you guys keep saying the GTO and Camaro are dead.  The GTO was ONLY SLATED for a 3 year run.  And the F bodys died because they were getting too expensive to produce.  They also had union problems with that plant and the Canadians kept sticking it up GM's ass.  If you notice, they didn't give in to Canada's demands, instead discontinued the line and knocked the plant down the next day.  Putting the Canadian Union out in the street.  The new Camaro is scheduled for production mid '08, in the Ontario plant.

That argument really needs to go away.

Becasue they weren't selling, pretty simple.

The plant in Canada that built these cars were better utilized to building cars where GM could make a decent profit, which was very important because GM was not in great shape at the time. That's the whole reason the union was against them so much. Blaming bean counters is not telling the whole story, and I don't blame GM for getting rid of the cars, they just didn't have the resources to redesign them, especially considering they needed to sell a certain amount that just wasn't happening. The destruction of the plant was a money saving startegy, just like Ford did recently, to save on materials and personnel expenses.

Horsepower is not the clincher in the sales wars. The F-bodies were difficult cars for a large percentage of auto buyers, and their needs were better met by the Mustang or smaller, more practical sport coupes. Mustangs have always been a little less on the pocket book, sometimes only a few thousand if that much. To some, that's a fortune, and turned a person into a Mustang, or other car owner, instead of an F body.

Over time, GM has matured a tad, and is now getting ready to produce another Camaro. I sure hope they do it right and give the Mustang, and possibly the Challenger, some competition. Then we can have the good ol' days back.

This thread was started as a sort of fairwell/tribute to the outgoing GTO platform.  When/if it is resurrected in the next year or two, it will most likely be a completely different animal.  So I think any judgements on the GTO's future need to stay hushed until we actually see how it resurfaces.

In the meantime.................stop beating a dead goat.

About the GTO... I don't know whether to say "Rest in Peace" or "Stay Dead"!
Looked like a darn mid-90's Honda Civic.
It did autocross better than the S197 Mustang though... But I go for looks first!

yesterday me and my gf were driving to town and we past a house that had just recently bought a GTO and (not kidding) she said "that is probably the best honda i've ever seen"

i died laughing and had to spend the next 20 minutes trying to convince her it wasn't. so the GTO/honda resemblence is there...

Agreed, the fact that it looked like an oversized Cavalier is the only thing that stopped me from buying one back in '06, so I kept the old 03 Grand Am SC/T for another year...

PS: Sidewayz: "there is an ass for every seat" I also find that funny as hell, nice one!!!
