Default 2000 V6 questions.

I'm checking this 2000 V6 Mustang. It's in good shape, about 70K miles on it and looks mechanichly sound.

Is there anything specific I should look for at this model/year/engine combination (like the infamous Explorer V6 4.0L engine and it's timing chain rattle)?

What are the common problems in this year?

Thanks,
zoti

Really nothing mechanically. The stupid seatbelt retractors are junk, but i think thats just a ford thing. I got my car in 2004 with 26,000miles on it. I now have around 93,000 miles, only thing engine wise that i got was a antifreeze leak. I just had to replace a hose. Normal wear and tear items will have to be replaced. I have gone through one clutch, one set of tires, one set of brake rotors/pads, and thats about it. It is a very dependable car. Pretty much the 99-04 years are the best for the six.

No real common problems with the 3.8L V6, but there are some good things to look for. Look for leaks around the rear end from the seal that seals the differential in the rear end. Look under the car for any signs of rust on the subframe, rust = bad, while down there look the exhaust over for any visible leaks/breaks, not a biggy, but will make you sound like crap and can hurt peformance and mpg. Test drive the car and make a few hard turns at a slow, then moderate speed and listen forany odd noises like sqeeking. Look at the valve covers, there should be absolutly no oil around the seals, oil = gasket failure = very bad. If you can, find the tire rods, they're inclosed by a rubber accordian looking thing behind the tires and visible in the engine bay, they should be near straight, if there is a significant bend in them there could be a bad tire rod. That's about all I can think of, if those things look good, and the car shifts fine, then it's good to go.

Thanks guys. This is really helpfull. I'm trying to get the right price as it seems like it will need some work on the paint. Nothing major but looks like the previous owner manged to scrape it on every other car i the parking lot.

Anyone have any idea on how much under/over blue book they go in TX?
