I then put the mute button on the right side by the oil pressure gauge. I also added a power switch right next to the mute button. I can use this when / if I get pulled over. I figure the chances of talking the cop out of writing a citation drop significantly if the cop knows I have a RADAR detector.

that is awesome!!!! that took sometime to do

Jamars are illegal. The V1 is the best radar detctor because they have the arows and the counter, not just a signal strength indicator.

Lets put it this way...

Would you rather spend $300 on a decent radar...

or

$300 on a speeding ticket, with possible points on your license AND your insurance will go up.

I am using a whistler something or another.... paid around 140 bones at Best Buy...

The output voltage of the cig adapter was exactly 12 volts, so I spliced into my drivers side vanity mirror, and hard wired the detector in....
That way, I can mount the detector in my tint strip, and from outside the car, you wouldnt even know it was there... Plus, above the mirro, i almost blends in, and when I got pulled over (these arent perfect), the cop didnt even notice it, or mention it at any means.....

Depends on what you want it for.

If you have a lead foot then plan on spending some money for one. THink about it. A ticket of going 85 in a 65 will be more expensive than a $300 detector.

If you just want one for speed traps and only travel moderatly over then only $100 will do.

Here are my pennys:

You don't speed but just want to know where the cops are:
Cobra or Whislter....$100-150 but don't spend more than $150. Those detectors average range in the open is 1 mile.

You travel speedlimit to 10mph over:
Cobra, Whistler, or Escort (7500). These will be $150 to $250. These detectors average range in the open is 1-2 miles.

You travel 10-20mph over speedlimit:
Escort or Valentine. These will cost around $300 and have a range in the open at about 3-4 miles.

You travel 20+ over the speedlimit:
Escort SR-7 with the Lasershifter ZR3. Or the Escort SRX which comes with both. This price is around $1000 but you can find for less at wholesale places. This range is about 3-4 miles and the shifter will cause to cop to read 3mph or 300mph on his gun...meaning he cant give you a ticket by laser. This requires professional install too.
