Car almost keeps dieing need help

The stang II -> Car almost keeps dieing need help (1/4/2007 5:58:52 PM)

Well my car almost dies on me when i'm driving. When I start it, it wants to immediately die. Then it takes at leas 12 minutes to make it a stable rpm. By stable, i mean staying at 1300 rpm for 3 seconds then almost dieing again. It only started yesterday. I was driving home and with out any hint or dieing so yea. I changed the fuel filter and it still does it.

Remember my car is carbureated. Well today I was diving home and had to put it in neautral and rev a 2 grand rpm to keep it from not dieing the put it in gear.

It just started and with out any hints 2 days ago or even in the morning yesterday. WTF!!

I think it has something to do with the carburetor. Crud from my gas tank, got into the fuel filter and I think went into the carb. But idk why else it would do that. And I was on the freeway and going 50 and my car is fine. Just anything below 2 grand it suks. But idk how reliable it is for more than 10 seconds on the freeway.

Any helpwould be nescasary. THANK YOU!

well,  if you think it might be your fuel filter, i suggest getting a new filter and trying that out

Check the adjustment on the choke.  My wife's 81 sometimes does the same thing when the high-idle cam loosens off...

Try the modulator valve. I had the same thing going on with a 67 Mercury Cougar, years ago. After filter changes and carb adjustments/rebuild, someone finally told me to try the Modulator Valve - problem solved! And it wasn't that expensive either.......

if your tanks rusting out maybe i can find the info from where i had mine coated. they did it inside and out then baked it and gave er a lifetime warranty. no more of that "can the owner of the white pinto please come outside, your car is leaking gas" while i'm trying to enjoy my meal at a nice steak house!!!!

i had just filled my tank for the first time in months too...... musta overloaded the rust with the extra weight [:D]

Yea everyone thinks our cars are pintos haha. But o well, i'll check the modulator valve, and we took a gas tank outa a 74 stang and hopefully it will work.. Thanks for the replies.

wait wasnt there something different about the 74's? or maybe it was a hatchback and a coupe were different......... something about gas tank stuff (i know the cap was lower on the rear fender in 74 but thats not what im trying to remember)

Not sure, but it will work. I love my II and won't sell it for my whole life.

The '74 is the only year that didn't come with a V8.  And the inner fenders are formed such that a V8 won't fit without cutting them.

I had a decent '74 Deuce and a junked '78 with a V8.  Wound up with a '78 4-cylinder auto somehow (traded the '78 V8 for a painjob on the 4-banger...bad trade, me thinks).
