looking to buy a 302 5.0L HO EFI fuel injection motor pulled from a 1990 ford mustang LX 5 speed convertiable for $490.00. wanted to know what i should watch out for when inspecting the motor up close in person. plan on rebuilding it and dropping it in a 67 coupe, what would be an ideal bore size this engine should have? i currently have a 289...if i buy this engine will i need to buy the transmission as well or i can you the one i have now from my 289. any advice would be great. THANKS!

u can use the stock tranny just need the right flywheel to adapt to it. it will need a 50oz balance compared t the old trannys 28oz just make sure there are no weird noises while its running and no blue or white smoke and u will probably be ok those 5.0 are tuff little motors i have over 170k on mine in my 91gt runs perfect another place to look for the same 5.0ho is the 88-92 linconl mark 7 its identical but can usually be bought for less since it doesnt have the mustang stigma attached to it

i think im leaning more towards the carb, gotta do the research first. which is better?
thats a matter of opinion, carbed engines are ALOT easier to work with then fuel injected ones. but if this is just a family cruiser, go with the EFI, but fi your gunna mod it ad drive fast alot, go carb
can someone explain the 50oz balance compared to the 28oz? and picking the right flywheel?
is this a fairly strightforward procedure? are the parts easy to come by? can i use the flywheel that comes with the motor?
Imbalance refers to the offset weight value used onthe crankshaft, harmonic balancer and flywheel. SBFs prior to 1982 used a 28oz offset weight. After that time, the5.0s went to using a 50oz offset weight. You have to match the offset weight of your flywheel with the actual motor you have.
The problem you run into is that thelater model flywheels are also different sized and drilled different than early models for mounting clutches.
Tell us what youhave and what you want to do, and we can talk specifics.

i have a 67 coupe with a 289 which was pulled and sitting in my garage. right now im jus doing engine research while i do bodywork on the car. basically i want something thats respectiable somewhere around the 400 to 500 hp neighborhood. the engines im interested in are the 302 and 302 5.0L but it seems like the latemodel 302 5.0L engines seem to be a little overwhelming because of the imbalance and flywheel sizes and how their drilled differently problem, it jus sounds difficult to correct to put a 5.0L into a 67. maybe i should just stroke a 302.
You never said what kind of transmission you have today. I take it you're looking to upgrade the motor and bolt it to your current tranny. If you're looking for 4-500 hp, that will narrow down your selections. If you currently have a 3 speed manual or a C-4 automatic, you'll want to plan on upgrading to a 4 speed toploader or a C-6 Automatic that's been reworked.
If you can pick up a complete 5.0HO for 500 bucks..that's not bad. To get 4-500 hp, you're going to be looking at several thousand dollars worth of improvements, such as a stroker kit, heads, special carb/intakes, maybe NOS...etc.. plan on spending over the 6K mark. That's just for the motor... then there's the transmission.
Unless you're going to be racing..there's no need for that kind of HP and you can really scale back.

When you're building your engine, you can change the imbalance to 28oz while it's at the machine shop. You'll likely be replacing the crank/rods anyway fora 400-500 hp goal. The 5.0L will more than likely be a roller cam, which is better for making more power. If you wind up toward the top of what you want, you'll be needing an aftermarket block along with the aftermarket rotating assembly.
