Concepting tranny option...

Blue coyote -> Concepting tranny option... (1/1/2007 4:25:20 AM)

Has anyone tried mating a Rad 4 bellhousing to a Toyo/Kogyo 5-speed?

The TK was used for a while in the Ranger and Bronco II, but used a hydraulic clutch assembly that doesn't seem overly practical to swap into a 78, but if I can make a Rad 4 bellhousing and clutch assembly to fit the TK, then I can have a decent tranny with overdrive...

i am semi-familiar with these trannys, but i dont know that another bellhousing would work. i suggest selling the trans and using the money towards a T-5 which can me made to slap right in there.

now that i think about it - the 300 6 cyl had the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 302's and i have a 89 ford van with a 300 6 and that "mazda" 5 speed tranny. so i guess that would be the bellhousing you need. I'll sell ya the whole running van for 500.00 complete with 565,000 miles on it (rebuilt motor, trans, and alot of rust) [:)]

Actually, I'm looking for options OTHER than the T5.  The locals seem to think they are worth their weight in platinum or something.  And I'd be putting it behind a V6, not a 5.0/302...

I'm going to try finding a MII 2.8/Rad bellhousing and see if I can mod it to fit (the same way some modify the Rad bell to fit a T5)

I'll take the van, if that $500 includes delivery (I'm in BC CANADA, eh?)

Basically, I'm seeing if there are any other viable options to get O/D in a II, and I've got a healthy respect for the Toyo/Kogyo (I had one hold up behind a 200 hp 2.8 w. 7500 redline, transfer case, 4.10's and 32" muds, through multiple powershifts, burnouts, and wheelies)

I'll post findings if I have any success on this...

Ahhh i had the same problem,  i found one used T5 in about 20 yards,  200k miles on it,  the jerkoff wanted $1500 for it.  i couldve bought a new t5 or better yet,  a t56

good luck nonetheless

i'd be glad to sell ya the van.... consider a flight down to florida as an added bonus =)

Not even remotely an option.  I'm an "undesirable" (chronic rope-smoker) so I'd never make it off the plane...

But....
I might end up with yet ANOTHER 78 coupe (V8/4-speed).  If so, my current 78 coupe becomes an instant parts-donor for the T-top and the Cobra....

my77stang -> RE: Concepting tranny option... (1/4/2007 11:26:24 AM)

sometimes i really wish i had a stick.... although i love the way my c4 shifts after dumping entirely too much money in it =)

btw.... "chain smoker" sounds much less... umm whats the word...... gay? [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)]

Blue coyote -> RE: Concepting tranny option... (1/4/2007 7:28:52 PM)

I've had both manual and auto trannies.  95% of the time I prefer the manual...

"Chain-smoker"? Nope, I don't smoke linked ovals of metal.   Uhm, let's see....replace the "r" with a "d" (or, rope is often made from HEMP fiber)  I smoke tobacco as well, but not one after another after another.  Sounds a LOT less "gay" when you understand the reference

my77stang -> RE: Concepting tranny option... (1/4/2007 8:29:34 PM)

understood completely (im pretty sure i could score you some "rope" if you came to FL )

=)

Now that I think about it, I wonder if I could put a 2.8 bellhousing on an SROD out of a fox-chassis?  I know they are similar trannies, but do they share the same case-to-bell bolt pattern?  (I happen to have an SROD kicking around anyway, but the bell is for a 200 I6)

my77stang -> RE: Concepting tranny option... (2/17/2007 10:08:14 PM)

bolt patterns on the tranny case should be the same if they're the same model trans, thats why they made bellhousings come off, so the same trans will bolt to multiple motors [;)]

..... still got that van LOL

Blue coyote -> RE: Concepting tranny option... (2/17/2007 10:23:03 PM)

That's the thing...Are the RAD and the SROD the same case?  I have a T/K 5 (4 bolt pattern, clocked about 25 degrees clockwise) and an SROD (4 bolt pattern, not rotated), but no RAD 4 or Rad 4 bellhousing (yet) to work with.  I still want to come up with a workable O/D option without resorting to to a T5 (way too much $$ locally)

Finally got the 78 coupe on the road, though.  I suspect it may have had some tranny work done by a previous owner...At WOT, it chirps into 2nd at 5900, and hits 3rd at 5500.  Tired 2.8, C4, 3.40's, and 185/80R13's.  A bit of a dog off the line unless I neutral-drop it, though

my77stang -> RE: Concepting tranny option... (2/18/2007 10:27:26 AM)

oh i was confused for a sec, i wouldnt think those two cases are the same. probably need to go with the TK setup or whatever that "mazda" tranny is like the one in my van. its the whole shabang - but i'd still try to score a t-5 if you can find a deal

Blue coyote -> RE: Concepting tranny option... (2/18/2007 1:33:01 PM)

The biggest part of the problem with swapping in a T5 is that the cheapest I've seen one go for locally is about $350 for a stock setup (with the crappy input sleeve, unknown mileage, unknown condition,no shifter, and no warranty)...If its had ANY work done on it, ever, it will go for well over $650 around here.  Only way I could even think of doing the T5 is if I bought a write-off and stripped it, but then there's the chance of a damaged unit and the Bylaw Officer (I live IN the city, and between my wife and I we have: three II's, two foxbodies, two Rangers, a camper, and a good sized shed full of parts...

I'm not going to even consider paying more for a used tranny than a used car (got my 78 coupe for $250...)
