here's a simple way to add a nice effect to your sigs and pictures.

first ill show you how to make the patterns for both the scan lines and the dots. after both patterns are made, the steps to apply them are exactly the same.

Scan Lines:
first open up a blank document with a transparent background. set the parameters: Width- 1pixel, Height- 4pixels.

press Ctrl+0 (the number 0 not the letter O). this will set the zoom to 1600x to make it much easier to work with.

select the pencil tool (behind the brush tool), and set your size to 1 pixel with a black foreground color.

color in the top 2 pixels with the pencil tool so your document now looks like this:

next go to Edit > Define Pattern and name it. i chose to name it Scan Lines for my personal reference purpose.

Dots:
now  were gonna do the same thing, but this time to the dots effect.

open a new document with a transparent background with the parameters of a 4 x 4 pixel square.

press Ctrl+0 to zoom in all the way.

use the pen tool with the color white selected, and color in the top left 4 pixels so your document looks like this:

next go to Edit > Define Pattern and name it. i used the name Dots for my personal reference.

From here out, all the steps are the same for applying either of the two effects. i will show you the scan lines effect, but in essense, the Dots effect will show up the same.

first step is to open up the document you want to apply your effect to. and go to Edit > Fill, and select "Pattern" as the "Use", and choose your pattern whether it be Scan Lines or Dots.

after you hit Ok, your document will look like this:

thats a bit too overwhelming, so lets tone it down a bit.

change the blending mode to Overlay under the drop down menu in the Layers palette.

its startin to get there.

now lets lower the fill down to about 35% to finish it off.
