View Full Version : remote car starter 4.0 Stang 12-25-2006, 06:19 PM Has any one installed one on there car and is it hard samuraidad 12-25-2006, 07:02 PM have not instaled one but looked at one and alarm as well. The problem I found is you need a programed key that is in a special box that tells the vehicles computer it is okay to start the vehicle. Remember the ignition key has a program chip that allows the car to start. The additional key is $40.00 plus the module for the system then the system its self. I was not willing to keep adding that much additional electronics to avoid any problems. Soo you have that many enemies or just that cold outside(lol)? Good luck just wanted to give you some food for though. Also most alarms are plug and play it is the optiond you need for the fun stuff. Check out directed electronics.com the make most of the alarms on the market and then some 4.0 Stang 12-25-2006, 07:19 PM Yea I guess its not that big of a deal, I just thought it would be kinda kool samuraidad 12-25-2006, 11:46 PM It would be a really cool adition. Did not mean to throw awrench at you but just wanted to give you something to think about. Like I said try check it out with directed electronics get the info from the pros. Have Fun Dean53 12-25-2006, 11:53 PM A remote start can be a challenge to install if you are not very comfortable with wiring diagrams and testing wires with a multi meter. I had mine installed perfessionally. it took them a good half a day to do. So I would definitely recommend getting it installed unless you are real cool with wiring and stuff. And yes there are a number of parts required besides the remote starter unit (relays, bypass module, etc.). Directed electronics will have a list of parts needed usually and a wiring diagram. I have the Viper 771 and like it very much. It is a remote start and alarm with 2 way remote. Hope this helps some. 4.0 Stang 12-26-2006, 01:20 AM How much did it cost you, cause i think at bestbuy for the install and everything its like 200 and somethin Dean53 12-26-2006, 01:43 PM well...the little part that i didnt mention was that I am a Best Buy employee so it came to me at a discounted price, but even so...having it installed was a must for me. I am comfortable doing stereo installs and basic work on cars, but that wiring was intimidating for the remote start haha. Our best guys in the install bay can usually do 2 remote starts a day, but the newer cars tend to be harder to work on than the older ones. many of the remote starts they sell include labor price in the overall price of the remote start, but just look into the other peices you need to get it all done because thats the "hidden cost" that can easily be overlooked. I think getting the remote start/alarm, parts and install woulda run around 400 or so....just a ball part as i dont remember where i put my reciept to actually look at the prices and stuff. ricklmesa@cox.net 12-26-2006, 04:04 PM This is not possible for a manual obviously right? lol I always wondered if there is a way to do it with manual trannys. SparkYZ 12-26-2006, 05:28 PM ricklmesa, that's a good question.... I'd like to know seeing as we have to depress the clutch to start the car... ST4NG 12-26-2006, 05:41 PM ORIGINAL: ricklmesa@cox.net This is not possible for a manual obviously right? lol I always wondered if there is a way to do it with manual trannys. It's possible but not legal in all states... If you can find a clutch lock, then that'll allow the remote start to start the vehicle. I'll find how how he did it, but a buddy of mine purchased a clutch lock that easily locks the clutch down the to floor. You push it down and then pull a small lever right under the lip of the dashand it locks todown. You pull the same lever to release it. james4litre 12-26-2006, 06:32 PM its not that complicated with a manual tranny, leave it out of gear, then straight wire the clutch inhibitor fuse if it exists on the 05s, im getting a new security system and I was wondering the same thing, what i mentioned above is how we did it on a friend of mines car ricklmesa@cox.net 12-26-2006, 07:21 PM huh interesting Rupp 12-27-2006, 01:10 AM This is what I got for Christmas and the total cost was $209 installed. The Mustang takes some type of an alarm bypass module and I haven't had it installed yet so I'm not so sure what it bypasses. I'll know more tomorrow. I've had one on my Nissan Maxima for 10 years and love it. 4.0 Stang 12-27-2006, 01:18 AM alright thanks, yea let me know what happens. Rupp 12-27-2006, 05:35 PM Ok, I called the place where my wife bought this device and they said the bypass unit is in fact a bypass for the chipped key not being in the ignition when the car is remote started. It's supposed to be installed next Wednesday. blacklaw 12-27-2006, 06:40 PM I had mine professionally installed with my alarm. I love it. Yes, I spent a bit more for the bypass. Jason1114 12-27-2006, 08:49 PM I had one installed at the dealer yesterday. They put in the bypass with an uncut key that is "keyed" to your car. I had the dealer do it as it is now covered under my factory waranty. Paid close to 600 but it was worth it in my mind not to save a few buck only to have an electrical problem and have the dealer blame the autostart StangNeWbieDJB 12-27-2006, 08:54 PM Sooo it is possible to have this autostart feature in a manual ??????? Not sure anyone really answered that question...I always thought it wasn't possible...[&:] workshop4ever 12-27-2006, 09:44 PM No, this can not be installed in a manual. It can be installed to work properly by removing the switch that determines when the clutch is pressed (allowing the car to start while the clutch is not pressed), but it is illegal and dangerous. The problem comes when you leave the car in first gear and accidentally start, the car will start and drive off un-manned. As for the install, if you are comfortable with a radio install this will not be a problem for you. I installed one in my previous car, that i purchased from best buy, and it only took me about an hour and a half. Just follow the directions carefully and make sure you check everything twice before you try starting it. kidrobotzero 12-27-2006, 11:05 PM im not sure if its possible for our car since i have never seen it with our car but my friend had it on his 03' mach1 which was stick. i didnt know he even had it till we were at dennys and he told me to go check on his car after we were done eating and i see him walking fast out of dennys and his car turn on. ill ask him how he got it to work in his car next time i see him Rupp 12-28-2006, 12:36 AM ORIGINAL: Jason1114 I had one installed at the dealer yesterday. Again this is my 3rd one and they do not void warranties. Rupp 12-28-2006, 12:40 AM Unless you install this yourself you're not going to find a reputable installer that will install one of these in a straight shift car. cam2904 12-28-2006, 12:58 AM It can be done on a manual but I would not recommend it. Dean53 12-28-2006, 01:44 AM I think there is something to be said as well for the type of remote start you pick. some are just a remote starter. while some include the functions of the key fob as well....door lock and unlock, trunk pop, etc ( in which case you have to link into the lights and stuff for flashing lights to show it is activated, etc. and when you ad those in and an alarm also, that can make the install more difficult. so this may play into the decision making process for self install vs. pro install. just something else to consider. I would agree with the manual comments. It can be done, but is highly unrecommended. 4.0 Stang 12-28-2006, 12:53 PM Last time I was at bestbuy, I think it was 200 and something forthe starterand the install. This is where I will most likely get it done, since I have a 100 dollar gift card there. |
