One thing you might want to check is the rear exhaust hangers. I had a similar sound; it was a cross between a thump and a rattle in the rear. I checked the spare and every fastener in the trunk including the lid and plate. I got under the car and shook the exhaust...nothing. I checked the suspension...tight as can be. I finally just got out a socket set and tightened the exhaust hangers and sound went away.
Mine was the exhaust bracket hanger. Just had it fixed last week. The mechanic said the original welds were pretty week.

Just want to know if other drivers hear a thumping noise when they drive over a bump or in a pothole? The noise appears to come from the trunk. Initially, I thought the noise was from a something I had in my trunk but since then I have cleaned the trunk and secured the wrenches that come with the car. I even thought that maybe the spare tire was loose or the wing on the car is bouncing off the trunk but they are both secured. I have looked all over the truck and can NOT figure out where this noise comes from?
Any idea?
If you have adjustable lower control arms the first thing I'd do is check the jam nuts. After that there are several things that are loose in the rear of the car. One is the rear bumper cover. Only way to tighten that up is replace the plastic push pins with nuts and bolts. there are also some plastic bumpers behind the bumper cover that shake up and down quite easily, not sure how to secure those.

Took my car in to Ford, and they decided (I have no idea why) that they needed to order the replacement gears from Saleen. The car sat there for a week and the gears didn't show up, so I went and got the car back, and they won't be in for another week at the minimum. I told them that they are the exact same gears, and that they should just use the FRPP gears, but they wouldn't listen. Oh well, hopefully they can fix it when I take it back in, but somehow, I seriously doubt it.

Well, I am taking the car in on Friday. It is time for an oil change anyways. That thumping/rattling noise is driving me nuts. I really think that it is the muffler attachment now. I have gone thru everything in the trunk so I eliminated that possibility. Will let you know if the dealership finds anything.
Well, the dealership found the problem. They said the muffler was not secured in place. The dealership called and talked to Steve at Saleen who said that it was a common problem. They can't do the work to secure the muffler at the dealership. They are going to get me an appointement with a metal shop and they will cover the bill thru Saleen.
They are also going to exchange my Saleen Air Temp gauge as it is not functioning properly.
I think that it is pretty good service from a dealership that I didnt even buy the car from.

So I was trying to nail down an exhaust rattle and it turned out to be the left exhaust hangar, like the others quoted above. Remarkably, my Ford dealership couldn't identify the problem in 3 separate visits. Does Saleen have a TSB about this???
This weekend, a local performance muffler shop put my car on a lift and identified the problem in about 8 seconds. It turns out that when driving over bumps, the car's exhaust hangar was hitting against an adjacent piece, thereby creating a rattle/clunk/thunk/thump. The problem seemed to be more pronounced when the car was warmed up, which makes me think the metal hangar would become softer (and more likely to move) when hot. This seems odd, though, since I would think the piece would have been fabricated with the expectation that it would be subjected to high heat during normal driving conditions. From what I saw of the the left exhaust hangar placement, it seems like a LOT of 05+ Saleens should be experiencing this problem. Of course, I'm a lawyer, not an engineer...
Anyway, the muffler shop adjusted the hangar to give it more clearance between it and the piece it was hitting (from what I recall, it was hitting the chassis). My car is at Saleen in Irvine this week, but when I get it back this weekend I will take some pix to illustrate the problem and the fix, in case anyone else is still trying to diagnose this.
That was the problem with my Saleen. It turns out the Saleen muffler is hung using the same mounts as the GT. The problem is that it is twice as heavy. So over bumps, the muffler was hitting the frame. My dealership said that Saleen is aware of the problem and are trying to come up with a fix.
When they fixed mine, initially they put some rigid connectors which removed the bump noise but then translated all the muffler vibrations into the cabin of the car. So I went back and they removed the rigid connectors and placed hangers. They said it was a temporary fix but it has solved all the issues.
That is pretty good service for almost ANY Saleen dealer.
Between these visits, my service rep was fired. He happened to have my email and emailed me. I asked him what happened and he told me that he was not producing enough for the dealership. He said all the reps get a percentage of all the work that they push on the customers. He said that since he was honest with the customers and only recommended what needed to be done, he was fired for it.
I was just wondering if that is normal practice at other dealers too? That is pretty dishonest in my opinion to pay people based on what they recommend for the service.

I thought it was comming from the trunk too. But they said its from the passenger side front suspension. It makes sense because mine only makes that sound when I drive over bumps on the passenger side.
ive got a better question what are you doing driving the car when its below zero? arent you worried about things like snow or freezing rain its niot your driving but all the other idiots on the road are the concern there
