RE: 05 mustang NHRA aprooved roll bars
Okay well the only place to get a good one is to have it custom made. The article posted by Brenspeed is a good bit of information. I did a custom six-point roll bar in my vert, and I have been through this already. You have to remove the seats, the kick panels, the door jams, the console and the rear quarter interior panels. You can leave the carpet in and just roll it up toward the center of the car. Once you weld in the rollbar you will need to do some interior trimming to fit some of those pieces back in. I had my interior trimming done by professionals (Riggs Bros Custom interiors) but if you are talented you can trim the panels, seats and or carpets yourself. The rollbar itself will have to follow NHRA rules which determine the diameter, the way it is attached to the car and the angkes of the rerar braces etc.
Any good chassis shop will have these rules and have built rollbars to these specs before.
I highly recommend doing the rollbar in chrome moly as opposed to mild steel. Chrome moly is much stronger and much lighter. ALL the rollbars and cages sold pre-made by Summit etc are made in mild steel. I also would be leary of how those roll bars were mounted and the position of the main hoop and braces.
If you do a custom one, you can choose where the hoop will sit in regards to your front seats, you can customize the height, customize where the back braces are mounted etc. This is even more true in a street car where yoy want to maintain an interior with seats and all. Race cars are gutted in the interior so placement of all this tubing is going to be much eaqsier if you are doing a cage for track use and will not have full interior.
The rollbar will need to be painted to because it will be ugly otherwise and susceptable to rust, especially in the area of the welds. I had mine painted by the guy who did my stripes and it was worth it!
