Im looking to put either a posi(trac lok) or a Minispool in my rear coming up soon. Its a stock gear( i believe 2.79) open 9 inch, 28 spline. I Want a 4.11, Locked or posi. Adding a minispool or a dragsppol can lock the rear but i KNOW it will hurt drivability. The car is a Fun weekly or biweekly track car and i drive it to and from there and sometimes work. My question is. How much does a minispool change in the way of drivability?? Im guessing it will chew up the rear tires and change handling to a point, but how much?? Is it worth the extra 250$ to put in the posi, or just go with a 20$ locking spool?? -Jon
as far as track, they're great for drive out of corners. in terms of handling they will tend to create more understeer and feel like they are pushing you into corners (especially slower hairpins).
when you abuse the limits of traction, they tend to step out quite quickly and are a little harder to catch and hold sideways (but you get used to it).
we just fitted a Detroit TruTrack to our rally car (pics on "look what I did last weekend" thread on p2.). It was much better to drive than the spool. want more sideways...just add gas. Really easy to manage and felt great. We will be pulling it out in a few weeks to check for wear, but so far so good.

also a minispool is weaker than a full spool by a huge amount, and its less durable than a posi by a lage amount. All that is transmitting torque to the rear wheels is that crosspin, and it has a bit of space between the minispool and the diff case. Add to that its in the middle of the crosspin, rather than on both ends and you have less metal holding the axles to the carrier.
Not a good idea and I wish they would stop making them.
how does the Posi work? is that the same as the tru track or a type of limited slip diff?

Minispools are garbage..don't buy one, you will not be happy. I had a minispool for a week, put in an Auburn Looker with 4:11 and I'm very happy with it.
i have a minispool in mine and it's my daily driver. It drives just fine except for parking lots. If you have the money, or you're putting down some serious power just go with auburn or detroit locker.
Thanks... i was really shocked to hear so many negatives about those. I really wont be putting down much power.. and im not driving it much, just looking for some good burnout material! -Jon
hey Jon, i thought you were looking for handling, road and track use. If you want a thing to do burnouts and it only costs $20 then go for it. If it breaks, you havent lost much (assuming you stop and dont grind up the broken bits in the diff gears).
Me, I'm with LCC. I'd rather do it once and forget it. I'm halfway there. Have a 31 spline 9" with billet axels and the limited slip center (which I think is what you guys refer to as a posi). I want the tru trac or something similar to finish the job off!
And then a dogbox from PPG for some serious clutchless gear changes and left foot braking at track days...dreamin' sorry. thats another $5k i dont have to spend.
