A 400 horsepower naturally aspirated motor is tough to beat.

Hi Chuck ~ Glad to hear your getting the PJ out for some fresh air and by the sounds of it some rather sweet exhaust notes !!! Nothing like the sound of a 60s/70s Trans-Am Championship Race Car, eh. I think you should have a little more thatn 200 miles on it by now unless your under a foot of snow like we are ? Get that Pony out there and ride her. More Pics. Wheel / tire close-up. Engine. Trunk. Exhaust. Anything. Don't mess with it, keep it original. Enjoy, Enjoy !!!

Thanks Kenardo,

You're right about the snow. We are in the middle of a blizzard in Tulsa. 15 degrees and ice everywhere! When it gets nicer I'll post some more pictures. I haven't driven it since last weekend! For now, the pony is in the stable.

Keep us updated on your progress, and I'll get more pictures up soon!

Cheers,

Chuck

Saleen's designers deserve a prize of some sort for 25 year of beautiful cars. I just checked out the link to the Ron Ward site and that car looks GREAT! I dont really care for Grabber Orange, but that car looks AWSOME. Can anyone name an ugly Saleen? NO!, that's why we are a bunch of drooling fools that deal with slight imperfections (extra long side skirts, pink tail lights, and falling steering wheel badges) and could care less.... Power In the hands of a few....

Congrats on the new PJ 302 Doc............looks awesome......just awesome. I kinda felt this way before.....and now seeing it with more detail I have to say: this is the best looking S197 mustang variant produced yet.........bar NONE. And hearing a bit about the performance, well..........I can only wish for this car.

Very nice. Enjoy that car Doc........for me.

Two more questions:

1. Are the rear louvres metal or molded plastic? I had some of these on my Celica back in the 70s and the ones that were available them were metal.

2. I notice in the engine pics on another site that the stock air intake and box appear under the hood. Is the hood scoop functional? Does it have a vacuum-actuated flap or something?

dramsey - The rear louvres are TPO plastic, not metal.

Also, the 'shaker' hood scoop IS functional. On the Ron Ward site you can see the air duct from the scoop to the flat air filter box, then back into the normal front intake.

I've seen some Mustang GTs with the shaker scoop 'look', but this one works.

I will get some new pics up soon.

So is it a stroker motor?

Yup. a Saleen Stroker- Looks like the 4.6L mod re-worked. Sounds like a beast.

Type 5.0L, 3V, SOHC V-8 cid High Compression
Bore and Stroke 3.55 x 3.80 in.
Displacement 5.0 liters, 302 cu in.
Exhaust System Saleen Stainless, 2.5 in. Variable Exhaust
Horsepower 400 bhp @ 6000 RPM
Torque 390 lb-ft @ 4700 RPM
Fuel Premium Unleaded 91 Octane
Intake Saleen Design Shaker Hood with Hi-Flow Inlet Tube and Air Box

From Saleen's website - I need to find the exact compression number other than 'high compression'.

I do know this. If I use anything less than 91 octane it voids the warranty!! LOL Note to self: don't buy the cheap stuff!

I actually haven't had it out of the garage for over a week now due to snow, weather, and now sand all over the highways! arg!

Been thinking about vanity plates for this thing: PJ 302; Boss302; GO 302 (note the Grabber Orange ref.), etc....

Coolness

Chuck

Haney -I haven't autocrossed it yet or had it on a road course, but as for street driving it's firmly planted.  You can tell it isn't IRS, but it seems damn good for live axle with the Watt's link. (over bumps on hard corners...)

S281E - No mods planned yet, other than maybe tinted windows and lowering it to have the stance of the preproduction car.

Hi Chuck,
Very nice pics.  I also have a Saleen PJ #39.  It arrived from Campbell Ford on 12/2 and it is the car in their photo shoot on the website.
I am still learning about the PJ and can't wait for Spring to really use it .  Right now its put away for winter with a little over 200 miles on the ODO.
Take and best of luck and times with your PJ.
