Default Question: Reliability problems with underdrive pulleys?

Kinda kicking around the idea of getting a set of underdrive pulleys. I can't quit thinking about the possible problems with such a system. I read one thread where the guy that had them, claimed that he had no trouble at all. I would like to get some feedback from others that have them installed. Do you have any problems with charging, water, Air conditioning etc.? Is the horsepower increase noticeable? Any actual dyno results on this mod? What do you think? Is it worth the $200. or not? Thanks, Dave

Well... you choices are either:

1) The PHP Alternator Pulley
2) The ASP Crank Pulley

You cannot run BOTH of them! It's one or the other...

We found the Alt Pulley was good for around 3 to 5 RWHP. There were no negative effects... Alternator seem to work just fine... The Alt pulley is like $169 and includes a belt. Is a very simple install...

Doug found that the Crank pulley was good for 4 to 6 RWHP. When we installed the crank pulley on my are WITH the Alt pully we seen 0 gain.... So doug's 4 to 6 RWHP seem to be right. The ASP crank pulley is like $290 and you have to buy a belt. It is also more complicated install...

Some have reported no problems with the crank pulley... however I found that the belt that they recommend was to long! It ended up hitting my alternator cover, coating everything in rubber dust and screwing up the paint... it started slipping and squealing... I think tried a shorter belt.. but the only one I could find ended up being a bit to short! The tensioner ended up making a nasty knock-knock sound as it "bottomed out"... Needless to say I eventually took the pulley off... it's now a paper weight... LOL!

I did do a write up on the alternator pulley...

Thanks for the response! The info that you provided was just what I was looking for. I went to Paul's website. The only underdrive pulleys that I found were for other mustangs. I didn't find anything for the '05 specifically. It sounds like the alternator pulley might be the way to go. Easy install, cheaper part, less side effects, no belt pain in the ass. So what if it's 2 horsepower less. Are there any other sources for the part? I haven't seen too much out on them.

For some reason they don't have it nice and neat on their website... I just ended up calling them and ordering it over the phone... LOL

You'd think that of all of the alternator pulleys that Ford has made, that they would have an oversized one off of some other application that would serve our purpose. Any ideas?

has anyone seen negative effects from the alt pulley with regards to powering a stereo system. I am running about 600 watts, so nothing too serious, but i love my music, dont want to take away from that system at all. thanks for any input!
