Default run-in w/ a new GTO

Yeah yeah, I also posted this at AFM.

Last night coming home from a beer run...I'd just turned right onto a 3-lane w/ no cars. I made the turn pretty hard and swung wide into the left lane so I guess it peaked the interest of this black GTO that was sitting at that light.

I saw the lights coming up quick while I held at about 60. GTO catches up (black, clean, nice) throws a rev so I grab 3rd and we hit it. I pulled even and stayed there through 4th, but by then the GTO was pulling ahead. Take 2 - we slow down to about 30. I'm in 2nd now and he's able to get 1st (auto). I 3-beep, get a legit jump and hold it again till about the top of 4th where he's reeling me in but there's a red light (which is the entrance to my neighborhood - I was already planning on not pulling in). I get on the brakes hard and stop. Mr. GTO flies right thru it!

At the time I just thought that was kind of crazy. Then this morning (you know how you think about all kinds of stuff in the shower?) I thought what if there'd been a car going thru that intersection. The GTO was doing probably near 100 when he went through. It would have definitely killed anyone on the driver side and probably anyone on the passenger side - front and back. Would I have been "at fault" well that's debatable. Legally, I probably would have faced some sort of charges. Morally, I think I would have been devastated by the guilt of having participated.

Anyway, the GTO was supposively stock. I've got a JLT, SCT, 4.10's. It was pretty much a dead even pulling match up to about 90 then the GTO starts to pull. He had a passenger which I estimated to be about 200 lbs and was an auto like I said. So it's going to take a few more bolt ons to hang a single driver M6 from a roll. Once the GTO is modded though I have no idea.

I gotta quit doing this!

In my opinion you are responsible for controlling your own vehicle. Unless of course someone actually makes contact and physically forces your car off the road or into another car or whatever.

I believe Tommy is correct, but I'll check and make sure.

But, otherwise, good kill. Those Goats pull on a lot of cars up top, even F-bodies.

Do you happen to know what year the GTO was?

Sounds like it was DEF. a LS2

a LS1 goat prob. wouldnt have pulled on a 05+ with 4.10's and other small mods

As for racing and being at fault, I still think had you been seen, or witnessed or something, you would too be at fault,, for some kind of something, perhaps contribuiting to a fatal accident or something...

Unless he had a dual exhaust conversion and an AM hood, it was an 05/06. Also it definitely didn't sound like an LS1. And now that you mention it there was a white car that had turned on to the road right after our 1st go at it. I had let off, the goat stayed in it (WTF?) and actually had to dodge this guy. We had our 2nd go about 1/4 mi in front of Mr. White car. Had something happened at that red light, the white-car guy would have come up on it moments later. I would have stopped (knowing me) and that guy would have told the cops that I was the one racing him. I'm assuming that the two GTO guys would have been dead too (no airbags at that speed) so this guy would have been the only witness.

My reasons for posting this were mainly to explain a situation I never saw coming - having thought I had considered all the angles about trying to do this stuff safely. I'm not so much weirded out about getting caught, moreso the loss of life that could have easily resulted.

Anyway, cheers!

Dude you raced a LS1 GTO, even with your mods a LS2 would have dusted you long before 4th gear.

My Camaro SS would eat up gear swaped 05 GT's and my GTO would kill my Camaro SS.

Even if I still had my Mustang or Camaro I would call bull**** on this story.

Actually, all the S197's I've seen at the track always ET very well, but trap stupid low numbers. From roll, I could easily see an LS1 walking away from a modded one, more so than from a dig. An LS1 Goat, however, is a bit harder to see that happening since they typically won't trap what an f-body will due to their weight.
