Same thing happens in my 97. When it happens, it's primarily when I downshift from 5th to 4th. Would like to know what's up as well.

Synchro's.

Not much you can do about it beside rebuild the transmission.

Some synchromesh might help.

yeah that is the prob, dads 99 gt had same prob, to keep it from grinding when going into reverse, when you crank the car up go into first gear first while the clutch is still in and then put it into reverse, it slow everything down in the tranny and will let you put it into reverse. hope this helps

yeah my contour SVT did this too me under warranty. 3rd gear would grind unless i threw it in the gear VERY slowly. I had the tranny rebuilt by ford and on i go. Not even a year later 3rd gear went again and was followed by 2nd gear. I was going to get it fixed but, i was out of warranty and i didn't want to rebuild my tranny again just to have it break again. I haven't seen this in my mustang.

this mustang and my last, both had different trannies, this one being a t-45 and the other being a tr-3650. I experience both would grind going into reverse occasionally and to defeat this all u have to do is simply shift into first and then into reverse.

But if you grind gears even when the tranny is warm then u've got some bad syncros. Only way to help this is by getting an after market shifter as it will typically prolong the life of a tranny with crisper shifts.

Oh ya, when you have the money to get your tranny rebuilt.....Just buy a t-56 swap kit from http://www.ddperformance.com/T56%20Kits.htm and this will not happen to you ever again. The t-56 is pretty much not destructable unless you do something really stupid. I dont know why the hell ford put such a s hitty tranny in the most powerful car they made that year.....1999, and 01 but halfway through 2001 they switched to the T-3650 ,,.,,,,,wtf why didnt they put the T3650 in the 99's ford is a joke, im so pissed with them i will probably never buy another ford in my life. The gas pedal broke on my cobra.....ford wants $85.00 for a damn piece of plastic. WTF

o wow, not bad at all. Are g-force kits good at all? They strengthen up the gears and some other components of the tranny

defenitely the syncros, mine does it too, its just the age of the car, tranny fluid will help it a little bit though. Mine also does it where when I put it in reverse it wont go in unless I double pump the clutch. It sucks.

I was told to go to 3rd the 4th real quick and then go into reverse. I've been doing that and it works great that way. I guess i don't even need to go to 4th because it just needs the teeth to align better.

Sadly enough, reverse is the first one to go. If you somehow have a warranty on your car, then run it hard till it goes out, and get the transmission replaced.

I don't though so no go on that one.

sounds like you need new syncro plates but that can be a very costly fix. Try flushing your transmission and putting an additive such as Lucas in there. just be careful with additives cause they may fix one problem such as syncro plates by creating more friction and breaking up the glaze over them but it can also start to break down seals gaskets etc over a long period of time if left in there too long
