At the time my options were Contour SVT or V6 Mustang. Being a thinking man, I knew that if I got a V6 Mustang then, I would have no shot at another one later, regardless of engine size, due to tight interior. I also knew that getting the SVT would have put us in a bit of a money crunch as well as losing much of the better performance sell with my wife. So we got a Taurus.
Now she has a Wrangler and I have a GT that cost less than the Taurus did at the time. 0% financing and they paid off Taurus plus gave 4K on sticker price. Can't complain.
Moral is... sometimes the shortest distance between two points is NOT a straight line.

I own a 98 Contour GL with a zetec I4 engine and auto trans. The suspension need to be better, (dropped 1.5 - 2 inches by use of coil overs) but the 0 - 60 is real respectable with it at 6.5. The engine and trans (both auto and 5speed) were designed by Porche. www.contour.org for more info!!

SVT Contours come equipt with the same engine standard. To top that off, they are lighter. So any SHO that could beat an SVT would have to be modified.

DJ605389 sorry but you are dead wrong. A SHO and contour use completly differnt motors. The SHO uses a Yamaha 3.0 V6 DOHC 24 valve 220 horsepower 200 lb-ft torque. 0-60 6.6 sec 1/4 mile 15.1 VS svt countours 2.5 v6 which is the SHOs baby sister engine , 1/4 mile 16's which uses all duratec engineering. The SVT would need some upgrades to beat a SHO. SHOSHOP.com is where I buy my SHO parts, they also have parts for SVT contours check it out. I wish SVT contours were as fast as SHOs i'd buy one.
