View Full Version : Stripes
AmyVCTexas 11-15-2006, 08:32 PM A few days ago I saw a white Saleen ('05 or '06) with two fat black stripes running over hood, roof, trunk, etc. like the old mustangs used to have and it looked really good.
Okay, I don't have the $$ right now, but am wondering about putting silver stripes on my car. Would love to get the feedback of the Saleen-loyal (I'm thinking Saleenanistas? Saleenazzi?). demarcom 11-16-2006, 12:07 AM Way to Shelby-like. I can't remember any Saleens with stripes on the top and I dont think they should if you keep it "Saleen"
I've always liked the Shelby-looking wide strpes; although, I think I'll keep my Saleen stock.
Nitehawk422 11-16-2006, 01:09 AM I really like the stripes, it adds that race ready look to any car, and its not specific to any car. I think the official name of dual wide stripes is LEMANS style, but correct me if I am wrong. As far as doing it to your car, being a SALEEN, I would make sure you get them painted on, the money is well worth it. Vinyl stripes used on cars today have a life of about 5 to 7 years before they begin to chip and come up. But it's just my 2 cents
Cheers!
should have filled in the white SALEEN with blue to make it readable, with the opposite contrast
S281SC Serial 1234 11-16-2006, 02:41 AM or to keep the stripe more "saleen looking" make the blue stripe on that white car a single wide stripe (space between the 2 stripes are distracting) and on the hood the saleen logo (like the one on the steering wheel) oriented sideways to make it the center stripe on the hood
hhhmmm??? I think I'll try and photoshop this and see how it looks

Those pix are so helpful, dotbomb. Thanks for sharing! I like the stripes.
02 JRClassic 11-16-2006, 11:01 AM That look resembles a Roush a lot more than a Shelby. The white w/ blue stripe is very indicative of the 360r/380r from 2002 and 2003. Anything to make your car stand out from the rest is never a bad thing.
marcuskeeler 11-16-2006, 11:13 AM In my humble opnion, it would make me think that the Saleen owner wished he had a GT500.
sowaxeman 11-16-2006, 11:23 AM I wouldn't do it. But if you do I say NO to the painted on stripes - go vinyl as you need to be able to easily remove them should you go to sell and a collector tries to haggle over it. Also I don't think the stripes mesh well with the SALEEN in the rear bumper [&:]
Bob D. 11-16-2006, 12:03 PM I have black stripes on my silver car. I put them on in early '05 when I first got my car and have been very pleased with the decision.
I think they look great and I have received lots of compliments, as it really spruces up the car nicely, IMHO.
My stripes are on the hood and trunk lids only, they don't extend down to the bumpers and I think that's a nice look. I got vinyl because, as sowaxeman mentioned, they can always be carefully peeled off if necessary. So far mine have held up perfectly through many washes and hot days, no hint of lifting or cracking.
As always, do what you like for your car, but I think the stripes are excellent, especially on the more neutral color cars.
unclemilti 11-16-2006, 12:55 PM I am thinking about putting some on my car.
Anything that makes your car stand out from every other cookie cutter Saleen out there (go to a Saleen show, and you will see what I mean- theres only SO much you can do to a Saleen) is positive to me.
I don't buy the "collector" argument, at least from a modification standpoint. A true collector car is one you rarely see, or can't find. Its not like you can't find a Saleen for sale, even ebay has 10-25 used ones at any time.
I would say..GO FOR IT!

Keep in mind, that vinyl stripes are installed for any long period of time, you will see their "outline" upon removal. There will be a certain amount of fade due to exposure to the sun and such. Personally, I think your car is beautiful just as she is :D

I for one really like the looks of this car (first saw it a few months back)
I wouldn't be too worried about looking too "SHELBY" as with 640 HP all a shelby will see is the rear end and not for too long at that.
On the other hand;
I'm really disapointed at the fitment of those saleen pieces when looking at the rear view. looks like all three pieces of the wing could be adjusted to fit better. Nit picking ..YES.. but I hope others are a little better fitting then this.

My car was the same way. I removed the trunk portion, bored out the wholes a bit larger for the bolts and re-installed. It gives you a little play to get it lined up before cranking them tight.

Sowaxeman, you would know if it were pink -- it's not a little pink, it's really pink. Not the LED's, it's actually the plastic that appears to have faded in a very short amount of time.
Mine's #52 and the deck is also not lined up as it should be. However I don't think I can fix it myself and am terrified of having a dealer do it. Maybe when I take her to a new dealer at her next service checkup I'll have gained some courage...
sowaxeman 11-17-2006, 03:21 PM Or you could road trip to Indy and I could fix it for your [8D]
I should have done a How To w/pics when I did it, but I didn't realize at the time it was such a common issue [&:] Basically the trunk portion of the duck-tail is held on from the inside of the trunk lid by 4-6 bolts (can't seem to recall exactly). Once they are all removed it will come straight off, but you'll have to disconnect the 3rd brake light to set it off to the side. The holes that need to be bored larger (further down toward the ground actually) are in the factory trunk lid. Close the lid, tape/cover up the bumper area to avoid shavings from scratching it, and make the holes about 1/8" bigger. Be CARELFUL not to let the drill bit go in too far or you will hit the black rear light housings on the outer two holes [:@]. I applied a dab of touch-up paint to the new bored holes to prevent rust. Once dry I reinstalled the tail and finger snugged the nuts. Then I had my wife pull down on the tail so the bolts would be resting at the very bottom of the new holes while I torqued them the rest of the way. The result is not quite 100% perfect, but CONSIDERABLY better than before :)

Paraphrased from wikipedia: SNL moments from the Church Lady :
Another classic moment was when she interviewed Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker (played by Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks) at the height of the sex scandal involving Bakker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Bakker) and Jessica Hahn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Hahn). During the show the televangelists begged for donations and a mascara dripping Tammy Faye recounted her experience with “demonic raisins”.

Yeah, adding stripes kind of takes away from the authenticity of a Saleen. The car in the picture reminds me more of a Shelby than it does a Saleen. I say ban the stripes from Saleens! Just kidding! It's your ride, and it's your style. But me personally, two thumbs all the way down!

I know that some purists don't like the idea of stripes, but I can't tell you how much better I think the car looks since I added them, and how positive the reaction has been from other "car guys."
I'll try to take some pics and postthem soon, I need some decent pics of the car anyway.
desant89 04-18-2008, 07:57 AM I can say that I love the way the stripes look. Someone did post them a while ago on a silver Saleen. However, as much as I know I like the look better, I also would not do it. It is a Saleen, and they are extremely rare where I live. I do not want any confusion. Also, as Jazzer said, there will be some changes with the paint after the stripes are on there for an extended period. If you ever sell, you may just haveto leave them on. Does look amazing though!
Bob D. 04-18-2008, 11:30 PM I am a terrible photographer, but here is ashot of my renegade striped Saleen.
I do not want to start a debate with those who don't like stripes on these cars, justposting for those who asked for pics.
These areclassic Le Mans stripes that go back to Briggs Cunningham in the '50s and have been used on lots of cars since.FWIW, Ilike them so much that when I brought the car back to SSV in Troy after a yearto have it morphed from an S281 into a S281SC, I kept the original S281 hood (the stripes did not work, at least at the spacing I liked, on the vented SC hood). :D
One thing I like about these stripes is that they stop before the bumpers; IMO stripes over bumpers would not work well on a Saleen--but whatever rocks your boat! ;)
