tire pressure ?

I just put on 18x9 with 255/45/18 tires and 18x10 with 275/40/18 tires on 06 GT, my question is that the air pressure was at 40 psi. I took it for a short ride and felt that the tires were slippery. Is 40lbs too much air? What would your recomendation be on the air pressure?

most tires come with a protectant layer on them from the factory, and there is a "tire break in" period the tire has to go through, so it may feel slippery...but if your worried about the psi, it should be on the side of the tire

thanks for the reply snake, max on sidewall is 51psi, but I know that it would be way too much. just wondering what others might be running on their setups so that I have a starting point to adjust from. I'm thinking around 36psi for comfort and proformance.

Uh I've got a 265/35-18 tire up front, 295/35-18 tire out back (18x9 and 18x10 wheels respectively)... For the longest while I was running 28 psi all around... gave great grip but the center of my tread blocks always looked darker than the ones right next to it meaning it probably wasn't riding the ground as it should have been...

I bumped it up to 35 psi in front, 38 in rear and noticed the difference, road noise decreased by a LOT and it requires less throttle to maintain cruising speed... bumps actually feel less noticable, but it depends on the bump of course. Max pressures are 48/52 I think so I'm still a long ways from the max, but I'm just wondering what pressure we should actually use. No, I'm not going to follow the manual on this one because it's not the same tire, and it's not the same size.

You always want to start with the recommended pressure that your manufacturer states in the owners manual and/or the placard on the inside of the door jam.

The tire only indicates max pressure which is different from the pressure the manufacturer suggests.

colin, thanks for the reply, I understand if I had put on same size tires and rims. These are 18x9and 18x10 rims with much larger tires(255/45 and275/40. Do lower profile tires need more air pressure or less air to work. What do u suggust in terms of psi?? Thanks

The pressure required is dependent on the tires and the vehicle. Some tires need more air to carry the same load depending on size and construction.

What kind of tires do you have?

I have the Sumitomo HTRZll, 255/45 on 9" rim and 275/40 on 10" rim. I started at 40psi but they felt slippery so I have dropped to 36psi and they feel better. I want to air it to best proformance and even wear. On a 06 Mustang GT, with TI cai&sct 91 tune, Magnaflow axleback exhaust. thinking about dropping car 1" with steeda ultralite springs next. Thanks for any info

You should start out at the pressure as indicated on the placard in the inside of your door jam and adjust from there.

If you are running 40 psi, your tires are overinflated.

Your tires carry their max load capacity at 36 psi.

40 is way to much man! I run 35 on my tires and it rides just fine. 50 Max psi is what the tire can handle, but that doesn't mean you should use 50 max on your mustang.

how about the kumhos in my sig? i started at 32 which is in the tire sticker in my car. max inflation is 51psi. at 32psi its allready bumpy, i cant imagine 51!
so 32 -36 psi is good? what about on roadcourse racing, higher?

The tires you have are low profile so the ride will be bumpy no matter what you do. You could decrease by a few pounds but keep in mind you are also reducing the tire's load capacity and could cause uneven wear.

Race pressure is a trial and error process.

what do you suggest on 40 psi max tires.
these are the stock tires.
