Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

colin@tirerack -> Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (11/7/2006 4:18:41 PM)

Tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) are now impossible to run from when buying a new vehicle. Every new vehicle made for sale in the USA has a direct TPM system as standard equipment. There are several exceptions though: the vehicle must have only four wheels (so no dual-wheeled trucks or motorcycles), and the GVWR must be less than 10,000lbs.   Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury have incorporated a TPMS system on several of their vehicles since the 2002 models. The first couple years they used a valve sensor, but now they have moved onto using a strap sensor which complicates the easy task of swapping wheels. We carry every sensor, strap and valve-mounted, and all accessories needed to install them.

The basics of the direct TPMS is that it uses a sensor in the wheel/tire to wirelessly relay pressure back to the driver on some sort of display. Some vehicles have a digital info screen that will show all four tire pressures (five pressures if spare has sensor) all the time. While others might just flash a low-tire-pressure light on the dash. There are also two different styles of sensors for this system: a valve sensor and a strap/band sensor. In the beginning, Ford Motor Company was using the valve sensors on many of their SUVs, but within the last two years they switched to using a strap sensor. A strap or band sensor is held onto the wheel by a metal strap that wraps around the inside barrel. This complicates the wheel fitments since each strap is fit to each wheel (ie. 18” band for 18” wheel). The OE bands are crimped from the factory so they can not be swapped from one wheel to another since they have to be cut in order to be removed from the wheel. The bands we carry can be adjusted from 14in diameter wheels to 26in diameter wheels and can be swapped from one wheel set to the next.

Ford’s indirect system will not affect the choice of switching aftermarket wheels or tires. The system runs off of the ABS/wheel-speed sensors which “count” the number of revolutions of each tire. If the right-front tire is low (25psi) it will spin faster than the left-front tire (35psi), so the ABS system will recognize this change and alert the driver with a flashing light near the gauge cluster and possibly a loud chime.   The previous models’ valve sensors were produced by Schrader. The current models using the strap sensors are having them produced by Lear and Siemens. The size of the valve sensor shouldn’t be a problem for many wheels, but if the valve hole is in the middle of the wheel’s barrel, then obviously the sensor will not fit properly. The wheel industries are aware of the valve sensors and are rushing to get most of their wheels TPMS-compatible.

If you have any questions about the TPMS-fitment on a wheel that The Tire Rack sells, I can look up the wheel and confirm if it will work with your vehicle.

I'm not sure if this is where I can ask a question, but we have a 2007 mustang gt convertible. Just purchased 20 inch weld racing evo chrome wheels with pirelli tires mounted/balanced ready to go, but questioned mounter about sensors and he put the brakes on. Said wouldn't work. Any ideas? Thanks

colin@tirerack -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (11/17/2006 11:59:08 AM)

what did he mean by wouldn't work? Wouldn't work with the wheels you bought?

sycd -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (12/31/2006 3:06:42 PM)

Are the TPMS sensors and straps reusable? I'd like to replace a set of stock 17" bullitts on a 07 GT.
Thanks!

Cobrakev -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (12/31/2006 5:21:07 PM)

Yes you can reuse the strap and sensor if you are using the same size rim. IE 17" for 17". Just make sure when you swap them to put the sensor 180 out form the valve stem. Now if you are going bigger in wheel size, then you must buy new straps, but use your sensors. Napa I think has the straps for around 10 bucks each. Ford wants near 40 each. Just get the strap the same size as the wheel.

Perfect, thanks Kevin for the reply.

The sensor straps are crimped on at the factory.  They have to be cut in order to get the sensor off so you would need to purchase new straps.

Hey folks, I'm still deciding on the new set of wheels to go with (I'll have to deal with them for a while, so I want to make sure I pick the right ones :-) and I have another question:

If I were to buy a new set of wheels + tires + TPMS sensors already mounted (tirerack.com offers that option), is there any kind of process/reset that needs to be done so that the car recognizes the new sensors? or does that happen automatically? I checked my owner's guide but couldn't find that particular info. I have a 2007 GT.

bcolem10 -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (2/7/2007 4:15:29 AM)

You will need a tool to train the sensors to your car.If you have the tool you can do it. The tool is a OTC 204-363 , this is the tool used  by our Ford dealer. I went with the pvc tube, no need to retrain the sensors.

vphokie -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (2/8/2007 5:02:31 AM)

I also have a set of 20" rims that were installed by the dealer. They said that they didn't think there was any sort of way to get the TPMS system to work. However, I looked on the tire rack website and saw that you can buy them. My question now is, when the car is sold, is it required to have the TPMS system working? Looks like it's pretty expensive to buy the straps and sensors for four 20" rims. If that's the case, I'll just keep hitting the reset button when the TPMS fault comes on when I start the engine ;)

IMHO I think you should go back to that dealer and have them fix the problem. For them it's only a matter of installing straps + sensors and activating them for the car. They rendered a govt mandated safety feature of your car inoperative, and ****ted their way out of it during the sale.

bcolem10 -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (2/8/2007 10:27:08 PM)

If its a 07 its the law. Did you buy it New or Used. Where are the stock rims/tires? You can buy new sensors form ford for just around $53 bucks and buy straps for up to 22inch rims at Discount tire for around $50 bucks. If you buy new sensors they need to be trained. Keep us up to date.

vphokie -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (2/13/2007 8:14:46 PM)

I bought the vehicle new and the rims were already on there. They didn't even give me the stock rims and tires...*sigh* Hey Colin, so technically the dealer should have purchased the new TPMS assemblies and installed them before they sold it?

bcolem10 -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (2/15/2007 2:41:41 AM)

Its the law make them fix it. If they do fix I bet this is how they do it. Stock tires and rims. Because the light is set to come on at 20% drop ( around 26psi ). It you lower the pressure to 26psi on your 20s you are all ready in trouble, Bent rim or worse. They need to reprogram the sensors low point and if they get it wrong and you bend a rim or get killed because the light didnt go on at the right time , someone is in deep do-do.

trpcthndr -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (3/19/2007 9:49:27 AM)

Hey guys,

So let me see if I have this right?  I have an 07 torch red V6 that came with the usual 16" wheels.  TPMS was working just fine. I just bought some 18's off an 06 GT and now my TPMS alarm keeps going off every time I start the car. I simply hit the reset button and all is well until the next start. I asked Ford if they could do anything about it and they said no, unless I wanted $575 plus labor to purchase new sensors & bands.  My question is, I can re-use the old sensors and just purchase new bands from TireRack or somewhere similiar for $50 each or so and have them put back in the new 18's I have now?? I thought since I got factory wheels off a GT I'd have no problem but it sounds like this was optional until 07?? HELP!!!

kthulhu -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (3/25/2007 8:57:02 PM)

I have a variation of your problem.

My dealer swapped a set of 18" fanblades onto my brand new GT from another car on the lot. Everything was good for a few hours and the the "Tire Pressure Monitor Fault" message started popping up. I'm wondering if it's a problem with the car not being calibrated for those wheels, or if there are no sensor bands on the fanblades they got me from the other car.

Norm Peterson -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (3/30/2007 3:42:15 PM)

It is my understanding that the primary purpose of TPMS is to prevent tires from being allowed to go too far underinflated.

Is there any effect associated with setting pressures on the high side, such as might be used at autocross or under unusual vehicle loading such as trailer towing?  If so, can the sensors or control module be recalibrated to permit this?  Note that this would involve permitting a wider range of pressures.

jslove1408 -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (3/31/2007 11:25:53 PM)

you can reset the tire pressures however it requires the tool.  the "strap sensor" or band sensors are a pain as well as the valve style sensor they break and seize all the time and aren't cheap to replace. If anything they are more hasle than help.  If you just check your air pressure your self often they are useless.

JasonHilton -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (5/26/2007 7:23:40 PM)

I ended up buying the straps from TireRack for ~$220

grabbergt07 -> RE: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (6/13/2007 10:59:41 AM)

Does anyone know the part number of the replacement bands from Ford, upgrading to 18" GT4's. Thanks
