Hi everyone!

This is my first post so please excuse me if this has been asked before.

I just purchased my first mustang, a 1969 mach 1. There is a strong smell of gas in the trunk area. No evidence of gas on the floor. The gas cap was missing a gasket. I made a gasket, but the smell persists. I am thinking the fuel tank to filler pipe hose could be deteriorated and so I ordered another today.

Any ideas?

good idea... on an old car i would raise it up and go through the entire fuel system.. watch for deteriorated fuel lines and check the gas tank.... make sure nothing is leaking especially GAS....

I don't see any evidence of gas anywhere.

I think I am going to try a second gasket. No sure if the first one is thick enough.

Has anyone installed a filler pipe hose? Looks like a tight are to work in. Does the tank have to be removed?

Also had a though that perhaps the tank could have some pin holes? Any way to test for this?

could just be lingering gas that you smell. though still check stuff

It's probably the filler hose inside the trunk, if it looks old, replace it. Gas lines run underneath the tank, check for leaks in the ring seal, you'll have to look underneath near the axle, and also check the rubber gas line. Sometimes it's as simple as a lousy hose clamp. If it had holes in the tank, you'll see it seeping out somewhere.

You're not a smoker are you?

No the tank shouldn't have to be removed to replace the filler hose inside the trunk. Just loosen the two hose clamps inside, and also loosen the 4 or 5 small bolts behind the gas cap. The filler pipe should come out straight back and you'll have access to pull off that hose.

I've also taken off the gas tank before. Easy job. Just empty your tank, loosen the gas line underneath, loosen all the 1/2"(?) bolts along the gas tank edges from inside the trunk, and take off the filler hose.

I spoke to the local Mustang Restoration shop here in San Diego and they agreed it is most likely the hose inside the trunk. Apparently, it is a fairly common problem. They suggested I replace the hose and give me the same instructions as Warren Boss9 on how to remove the old hose.
