GREAT NEWS ~ Word has it that Saleen, as promised, commenced production of the Parnelli Jones Limited Edtion with all 500 cars to be completed by the end of the first quarter 2007. What more could we ask for. The unlike the Shelby 500GT a truly limited production specialty collector car from an American Automotive Manufacture. Well done Steve Saleen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw the start of production on these cars a couple weeks back. There were about 3 or 4 grabber orange cars just starting the process. Having warranty issues handled directly by Saleen has its perks :D They are sharp cars.

11-05-2006, 03:15 AM
Will they come in other colors besides GO ?

Jonsey
11-05-2006, 04:23 AM
You have a choice of GO or GO. A Boss blue would have been cool. I would have waited and bought the Parnelli if I had know if was coming out when I bought mine in early 06.

06SALEEN1246

I don't really care for the GO color....but I'm sure some people don't really care for Screamin' yellow either...That is why they make different color choices..:) To me the PJ just looks too much like a regular mustang...but that is me....

You have more information on these PJ Saleens than my local Ford dealership does....

Seeing all the Saleens would be a blast!!! [8D]
I'm jealous. Plus, it sounds like you can at least get Saleen warranty issues resolved promptly.
I guess the rest of us will have to move to Irvine, CA or Troy, MI, in order to get our Saleens fixed promptly and properly. J/K

o6 Saleen 1246 ~ I don't think you get it my friend !? The Saleen Parnelli Jone 2007 Mustang is a Take-Off on the 1970 Parnelli Jone Mustang, that won the 1970 Can-Am Championship !!! This was a VERY BIG DEAL back then. It meant BRAGGING RIGHTS GALlORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thus it only comes in the same Grabber Orange as the 19070 Race Car !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thus this is an INSATANT COLLECTOR CAR with a LIMITED PRODUCTION RUN of 500 Units !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dotbomb ~ Re PArnelli Jones Saleen, do tell more !!!

I can confirm they are orange in color and there were about 4-5 of them in one corner of the building. They were just starting the build process. I would guess they had the stock motors in them still at the time. The exterior was completely stock and the hoods were still solid. When I was there a couple weeks prior they were building nothing but the trucks.

edit: !!!!

Kenardo,

Nice to see your excitement about this rare vehicle. I agree it'll be rare - but not many vehicles are instant collectors. We'll see about this one. It is a nitch vehicle, and many people don't know what a Saleen is much less who Parnelli Jones is.

I agree on wanting to see it first also, that is why I have a REFUNDable deposit at my local dealer for MSRP. If I don't like the car when it gets here, or it doesn't seem like it matches up to the pictures in terms of quality, I walk - plain and simple.

I'm sure it'll be a blast to drive, but no car is a smart investment - even one with 500 production limit.

Its hard to ever think of a car as a true investment. Still think they are a little over priced. BUT it is a limited production car.

Kenardo
11-06-2006, 04:29 PM
Chuckdoc ~ Interesting comments. I remember people saying the same thing about my 55 T-Bird, Ferrari Daytona, the Shelbys and other muscle cars back in the 70' and 80's. but your right, we'll see. Smart investment or not.

A big challenge for many of us on this forum is separating the emotion from the practicality when it comes to cars like these. It's rarely a good idea to buy any car -- limited production or not -- as an investment. Buy 'em and drive 'em because we love 'em (and the attention they bring), but I do my best not to tally up expenses vs. incoming revenue because it spoils the whole experience. On the cost/benefit ratio, rarely is the benefit something we can quantify. It's a feeling, not a dollar!

Chuckdoc
11-07-2006, 01:38 PM
Good Point Amy!

Emotion plays a huge role in any of these specialty vehicle purchases. Look at the people forking out 15-20k over MSRP on the GT500. These are the guys (and gals) that said to themselves when they first laid eyes on the car, "I must have that." Same thing with the Saleens when we first saw pictures or one on the road. Sure it would make more fiscal sense to buy a Honda Civic without some of the fitment issues and better gas mileage, but how do we feel when its parked in our garage? Not as satisfied as we would in knowing there's something special and rare out there.

I've wrestled with emotion vs. practicality for the last year or so when I decided start looking for one of these specialty Mustangs. Since then, I've gone from Shelby to Saleen to Foose and now looking at the PJ Saleen. My deposit on the PJ is in and I have right of first refusal when it's delivered. I'm sure I'd be happy with any of the named vehicles, and will work through any QC issues as they come. At the end of the day, it's worth it. I'd hate to 'settle' for a practical decision and kick myself later....

Chuckdoc ~ Your path and mine are the same in many ways. I sold my BMW/5 and moved into the Bullitt for many reasons including a deep deisre to get back to the muscle car feeling I grew up with in the 60's. Also I have a very strong conection to the movie Bullitt which would take a small book to explain but it does involve a Charger, the Police and a 67 Couger GT I had at the time. Moving forward, I too had ordered a new Shelby GT500 and when my former dealer buddy ? who I had bought my Bullitt from at $1000.00 over his cost, as well as several other Ford products from him over the past 20 years. He said he would give me a great deal on the Shelby and when he phoned to take my Shelby order and told me that the price was ging to be $20,000.00 over MSRP I told him to keep his car !!! In hind sight he did me two favors, first his greed sent me in the direction of the Saleen Parnelli Jones Mustang and second I found a fantastic new Dealer in Mike Z at Frontier Ford in Anacortes, WA. So now everyday is like the night before Christmas waiting for the PJ to arrive.

You know those rear 1/4 louvers give us Saleen owners a true SALEEN option now (assuming they end up selling the part), rather than the Roush or Cervinis as several have asked opinions about for their Saleen lately :) I'd probably buy them if they are priced reasonably.

Dealer is Kevin Krebbs at Joe Cooper Ford in Tulsa, OK. They actually placed the order themselves before I inquired about it. By the time I asked, they said they had one on the way! Anytime you can get a Saleen at MSRP while Cobras are going 20k over MSRP its a good thing...

The same dealer had a Mustang car show a few days later, and I saw a pretty nice Saleen PJ clone built from a GT. After considering the options, it came down to a choice between the PJ and ordering an S281. I decided on the PJ. Can't wait to see it when it comes in, and nice pic dotbomb.

Bet we get stopped by the cops just to look at the car. Our local fuzz have new Hemi Chargers. Would like to come up beside one of those on the Freeway in the PJ and see what he's got. We have a fabulous 700 mile drive through the mointains here, a dream ride up around and back throught another mountain pass that one has about 200 corners. The Pj is going to love that drive as much if not more than the Bullitt ! Amen Steve.

According to the multiple times I've been to their facility and peeked in the back, they put temporary wheels on them to roll them around the facility. They just slap whatever they have laying around on them. Most of the time they are the original take off wheels from the Mustang GT though.

But they'll put the $1900 chrome 20's on there and risk those - the same wheels that will no doubt end up on a S281 or SC, or sold via Saleen Aftermarket [&:] I realize if they got damaged they wouldn't sell them, but still equals ineffeciency in my book ;)

Kenardo

Inefficiency, not the case. This is all part of the assembly line process, if you've ever been involved with that activity. It makes a lot of sence along with economies of scale. In other words these things are all very well thought of and thought through to make sure your SALEEN is as price competitive as possible. One needs to take a look at the Bigger Picture, say sa.

I would imagine they are already damaged/rejects/defective. I donated a wheel to the cause not to long ago (peeling chrome). I bet it is rolling around on a PJ right now.

This is an inefficiency. On an assembly line you do not want to put something on just to take it off and replace it down the line. Tech 1 has to take the time to take stock wheels off than put temp wheels on, than later tech 2 has to take temp wheels off and put coreect wheels on. Option B stock wheels off than Correct wheels on. Option B is more efficienct! When was the picture taken, they probably didn't have the correct wheels yet. They probably wanted to get ahead in the build, and not wait for the correct wheels, which is a good thing!

Oh and PS economies of scales has nothing to do with efficiency. It has to do with that it makes more economical sense to have one common part used for lots of different things. another words if you can have a door handle used on 2 models as opposed to 1 model, the part becomes cheaper since the vendor can make more parts thus being able to have the piece price cheaper than if the qty, was half.

Wish they had more pics of PJ in build!!

Work and Play keep me so busy the wait is not killing me that much. Sorry ! What is killing me is the RAIN. In the Pacific North West, November is the rainiest month of the year and if this rain keeps up through into Decenber I won't be driving the PJ as it is going to be my Sunny Day Driver but that's OK because I'm keeping my Bullitt and its my Daily Driver. Congrats on the info Kenardo!!

Also FYI: The Saleen PJ production version IS going to sit higher than the pre-production model. It will have the same height as the S281s (Same suspension). Ride height can be changed, but that will take a new set of springs.

I got this from the Dealer support spec. at Saleen via email.

Chuck ~ Thank you and thanks for the Heads-Up on the Ride Height Very interesting !? Meeting with Dealer tomorrow and I will bring this up. Do you know the ride height of the Prototype ? The Spec Card I got from the Dealer says, in short; Saleen Racecraft Suspension including N2 Struts - Front and Three Link Saleen Racecraft Direct Acting Linear Rate Coil Springs and N2 Shocks - Rear.

Chuckdoc
11-18-2006, 08:07 PM
Kenardo,

Don't know the show car ride height, but it looked like it was slammed pretty low. One could do that with any car - I was just a little bummed out that the production versions won't have that stance in stock form.

The PJ will have the s281 racecraft suspension WITH THE ADDITION of the Watt's link rear-end instead of the Panhard bar/rod. This allows for a more linear movement with less lateral arc / crawl over the bumps : This is a 'throw-back' to the actual suspension setup of the 70s car. It would have been cool to have IRS, but that is another topic....

Also,

our car build dates are 2 days away from eachother, which aligns with your 15 / day rate. It also tells me I'm probably gonna have to wait a bit longer than the first week in December like I was told...

I think I called that one last week. I was hoping Saleen would leave the car at that ride height but ???? Oh well. I think it says on the Saleen website that the car will have coilovers. If so you should be able to crank it down a bit. It probably rides like shi* that low but looks great!

The production PJ cars do sit higher than the proto car did. You guys waiting for one, should have them soon. All they are building right (in Irvine) now are the PJs. There is a sea of Grabber Orange everywhere.....the production line, paint dept. etc. Saleen is shipping all the F150s and Mustangs to Troy to be built their.

Hi Chuckdoc ~ Would have been interesting to have a PJ IRS however I don't think that was in the 1970 PJ I drove a Saleen S281 Supercharged jesterday. A real head turner. Had it up to 100 mph right out of the dealer parking lot and did not even push it. Loved how tight it was. No throttle lag at all. Superb fit an finnish by Saleen. Found the seats a little hard compared to my Bullitt. The exhaust was rather quiet. Prefer the sound of the Bullitt over the Saleen. More of a Muscle Car sound. A guy came in and bought it 15 minutes after Itest drove it. Traded in a HI-Po Mini for ture American Muscle. Good choice, eh. 21 + days and counting !!! I figure December 15th or sooner. Kenardo

Okay... This is funny...
I just noticed those pics are from Midwest City, OK. My Tulsa, OK dealer called me today saying the Midwest City dealer got their PJ in and we could do a vehicle trade for me to get that one #57 instead of the one I was waiting on #126. I said, "Sure!" and was told to expect delivery of this one Monday or Tuesday next week.

Next thing I know, I'm looking at pictures of THAT VERY CAR on ebay!! Dunno if they just didn't have time to cancel the auction or they decided against letting me have the Midwest City car?!

Very interesting. Of course, now it's too late to get ahold of my local dealer and ask them what's up.

We'll have to see in a few days.

Chuckdoc ~ I smell a RAT !!! Something fissssshy with the Midwest City Ford Dealer ??? Good old car dealer greed. I find it rather strange that a dealer would put the PJ on EBay in the first place but then he's probably one of those dealers who maked up the GT500 $20,000.00 or more. Although on the other hand it may show the foruntate few like your and me that the PJ is going to be worth more than MSRP in the future, at least this dealer thinks so !!! Another question is why does the PJ on EBay have 65 miles on it ??? I know that the Saleen Test Drivers do a few laps around the block in Irvine to make sure everthing is running OK, but I don't think that they put that many miles on it ?! I say go with the flow and take delivery of the PJ your dealer ordered for you. I'm going to have to wait for mine till Dec. 15 when I return form my annual golf trip to Palm Springs. Maybe I'll see one there ? In the mean time enjoy your Turkey and the wait.

I thought so, too; although, it didn't bother me, because I figured it was throughly factory tested.
Total miles, on the odometer, when I bought it, was 148. On the window, was an official-looking Saleen sticker saying that Saleen had driven it 142 miles, for testing/quality control.

Good thread guys.

I can't get in touch with my local dealership to ask about PJ build #57. Another ebay shows #56 on the ground. That tells me with all the guys that pre-ordered, there has to be at least SOMEONE that owns this thing and could post pictures, give a ride report, etc... It drives me nuts! Maybe I'm not that good at searching the internet for that kind of stuff.

My 2006 S281 SC came with 8 miles on it when I picked it up from the dealer. I was wondering does anyone know what the center gauge pod on the PJ is used for? On the SC they display boost and intercooler readings. The PJ is not supercharged so I was wondering what Saleen is using them for? Let me know if you have any idea what they read. I think its a good look on the car, but I was wondering about functionality.

Saleen Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Build Number 57 is in my GARAGE right now!!!!

I'll post some pics tomorrow after a wash. I 'test drove' it from OKC to Tulsa today and bought it this evening!

Just came back from dinner out with the wife and the awesome PJ Saleen!!! I'm totally excited. It looks like Christmas came early!

First impressions (there will be more tomorrow w/ pics)

1) FAST - This thing is high revving, high compression, and all balls.
2) AWESOME EXHAUST NOTE - I think this is tuned for maximum attention or something. (Read: very good).
3) WELL DONE - From top to bottom, this car has signs of being well thought out and balanced. I'll touch more on this as soon as I can properly find the words....

If anyone's thinking about a PJ Saleen, #57 is taken, but #126 is up for grabs! I think they will continue the Ebay auction at Midwest City with that car. Let me know and I can give you details on the dealership.

Production Delay for the Parnelli Jones Limited Edition ~ All who are waiting for their Parnelli Jones Limited Edition will have to wait a little longer. Saleen is backed-up with new car orders BIG TIME ! The PJ has thrown a wrench into the regular Saleeen Production Time Line and it is taking longer to make a PJ LTD. than previously thought. Looks like number 90 will be built some time late this week. Seems Saleen is able to build 7 per day rather thatn the 14 per day as originally projected. Reasons include the Parnelli Jones himself making sure that the quality of the Fit and Finnish are second to none. So the wait is going to be a little bit longer for the lucky few, but well worth it !!! For those of you who have your PJ ENJOY the heck out of it before the real winter weather hits. There was snow in the mountains around Palm Springs on Sunday.

Cool,

Just changed to synthetic Mobil 1 at the 500 mile mark, and the PJ is running strong! No fit and finish issues so far. All panels are on strong and the build quality is impressive. Had it up on a stand today while changing the oil and the underside is as pretty as the top!

I get alot of questions on this thing, and there is a whole lot of interest in this car. Few seem to know who Parnelli is, so if they have time I find myself giving the recount of the 1970s trans-am Boss 302 story... I need to find a quicker way of telling people about the car. hehehe

The major impression I get while driving the PJ is people 'get it'. They have this visceral response that seems inherent in the American culture towards Mustangs, american muscle cars, mom, dad, and apple pie. This thing taps into that dynamic like no other vehicle I've experienced... and you don't just drive a Saleen, you experience it.

Cheers,

Chuck

Seeing all 5 of them lined up at Ron's is a sight we will probably never see again. I have seen 4 SSC's all lined up at a car show years ago and they only made 160 of those so maybe we could get lucky but I'm sure for the most part collectors will scoop them up and hide them away. A shame really since they should be driven like Chuck plans to do with his.

The only thing I wish Saleen keep was the ride height from the prototype car. It rides a bit on the rough side compared to the production cars you guys have purchased but I think it looks really good.

Chuck,

The PJ cars are supposed to have coil overs up front. All springs are also supposed to be linear rate so if you can handle the ride now that's pretty good. The car I drove actually felt a little soft compared to a coil over car. I didn't even look to see if it had coli overs up front. It is a bit of work to make a coil over set up work on the rear of the 05 and up cars. Instead, adjustable lower control arms are used.

As far as I'm concerned there is only one option for coil overs.

http://www.evasivemotorsports.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=EM&Product_Cod e=35230045

If I go coil over on the 06 this is the route I would go.

Chuck,

If you have coil overs up front like advertised then just crank it down and get ready for a bumpy ride. I don't believe you have adjustable LCA's so you would have to purchase a set but it's not rocket science to get your car to look like the pre production car. You can achieve the same effect with springs alone. Supposedly, it will handle as good as it can just the way you bought it. Like I said, it's not rocket science to get your car to sit like the picture but if you just go and slam it, it won't handle better just because it's lower. That's why most of us go with the KW set up for the adjustable compression and rebound damping. Believe it or not with those adjustments you can get the car to ride like it's at stock height but lower it down on the wheel wells like that autoshow pic and still handle.

Hi Chuck ~ Thanks for checking. I just received word today that my PJ is on the assembly line today. If all works wellit will be shipped from Saleen on Dec 27th along with 2 other PJsfor my dealer. Therefore I should see it at the Dealership January 2nd or 3rd. So it will be a Happy New Year for me !!! I'll let you know as soon as I get it. Latest word is that Saleen has some concerns regarding the quality of the chrome parts on the car. Steve Saleen has apparently mandated that the PJs must all be perfect before they leave the plant. Nice touch I'd say.

PS, Saywhen ~ I did not receive your email address. Please send it to kenardo@telus.net

Regarding some of the fit and finish debates here the last few months, I'd hope he'd mandate that for ALL cars that come out of the plant. I'm 600+ miles in and so far, no concerns. Nice to hear about the chrome parts, I'll have to go over mine again!!

Chuck ~ Yes, the HIGH QUALITY CONTROL THEME is for all PJs. From # 1 to # 500. Seems that Steve and Parnelli himself are direcetly involved with the HQCT on all parts and the finished product, thus the longer thatn expected wait for some of us. Well worth it from what you say. At the request of my very cool dealer buddy, I received a call from one of the executive folks at Saleen yesterday who assured me that, " your wait will be well woth it,you will not be dissapointed in any way with your PJ " . I also reveived an unsolicited call from a Saleen Customer Service Survey person who asked some great questions regarding my Saleen S/C Test Drive experience. He wanted any and all positive or negative comments. Including was there anything at all that you did not like about the car and is there anything at all that you would change in the car if you could. He is now familiar with this website and will be checking in on it to see what we all have tosay. I told him to call me back inlate Feb. after I have a few miles on the PJ. Merry Christmas to ALL !!! My wife hung the Parnelli Catalogue on our Christmas Tree. I'm dreaming of a Grabber Orange Christmas.http://www.mustangforums.com/micons/m9.gifhttp://www.mustangforums.com/micons/m16.gif

Kenardo,

Another site to help you wait: www.grabberorange.net (http://www.grabberorange.net)
Check it out, a site just for the grabber orange stangs. There's even a place for the tuner and Saleen versions. I already found a guy that owns #75, he's posted pics of it over there. You gotta check it out!

Enjoy your PJ when it comes in!

Cheers, and Merry Christmas to everyone!

Hey Chuck ~ Thanks for the heads-up on the GO website. Just so happens I found it earlier today and saw your post. Neat site. #75 does great work. Your going to have to teach me how to do that stuff when I get my PJ.

Cheers and ENJOY your PJ over the Christmas Holidays.

That is a pale attempt at capturing the sound of this car, but I realize it is hard to get the true sound without professional recording equipment.

Cool vid, and be proud of your car in Switzerland! That's gotta be rare...

Attn: All PJ Lovers ~ go to www.motortrend.com (http://www.motortrend.com) and type Parnelli Jones in the search box. You should be able to find the PJ on the Track and hear what it really sounds like.
