View Full Version : Thinking about the XCAL II

Im pretty sure my next mod is gonna be the XCal II. What tunes do you recommend for the V6? I wont be going to the track or anything. I use the car for everyday purposes. But I do need that extra boost on the HWY. I always think to myself, Hey I should be leading the pack! Also this is a newb question. For the different octane tunes do you have to wait till your gas tank is empty then fill it with the required octane than switch the tune?

If you have an automatic I would go with Alternative Auto.

Yes I do have an automatic. Are they one of the sponsor sites?

I don't believe so but they specialize in Automatics so you know you are getting a great tune.

You will here lots of people say that this or that company has the best tune........

All I can suggest is do a search on the subject. As far as personal preference goes, I have evolution performance's tune on my 05 Auto and I am very happy with the results. Thay are a sponsor on the site too............

I have an Evolution 93 Xtreme tune (with C&L intake), and I am very pleased (4.0L /auto). I tried the 87 tune recently, and noticed it to be a bit more sluggish than the 93 Xtreme. For me, it's worth the few extra bucks per tank to get the added performance out of the car.

To answer your question on gasoline, yes you want to get the lower octane out of the tank (run it to E) and fill up with the higher octane gas before changing to that tune. I was also told to use brand name 93 octane gas with my tune, versus gas from the discount stations.

The proof is in the pudding..... Alternative Auto 14.6 and 14.3 Boss244 fastest NA autos on the site. If you want you can watch my vid and see how a properly tuned auto shifts gears. Good Luck

What good is a tuner without the CAI? Who has tunes that do not include a CIA?

I called Dough from http://www.bamachips.com and he explained in laymans terms what the CIA does and what the tunes do. I'm just waiting for my Christmas present.

2006Ride, with the mods you are showing in your sig, any given tune from any shop, well any reputable shop (VMP Tuning, Alternative, etc.), will probably be within 5% of each other. Look for the best price you can get and make sure you get all three tunes (87, 91, and 93 octane). Also inquire about future mods, like if you add gears, will the tuner mod the tune for free or for a reasonable amount. When I first started researching my XCal2, I was quoted a higher price from one shop for a tuner with one tune. They wanted $100 for each additional tune (and that's not with dyno time), so shop around.

Great info guys this helps alot. Ok another noob question. For the 93 Octane tune do you run premium gas, 91 octane? Is 93 even available to any gas stations? I have not seen it before???

At least we have timeslips to back up the claim. That has to count for something .If there is a better tune out there ...that makes my car faster ...hell ...i will buy it,but for know, the fastest Autos run tunes from alternative you cant dispute that.

Yeah my Chevron runs 87, 89, 91. I'll have to keep a lookout for this super premium one.

I can dispute that. You know every tuned auto running in the U.S. ? Or you know the autos running here? Know any autos that have done all the same mods you have, and run a tune from another tuner? Nope? What about tuned cars that don't run 1/4's ?? You actually know very little. You know what your car runs. That's about it.

Actually, the fastest autos are tuned by Bamachips, that is, all the X-Men with XChargers. Or maybe the Predator tuned for a turbo is best. I mean, when you pronounce your tune the best, you don't consider mods, so, then I guess it's acceptable to point out that a car with an XCharger is faster than yours, and it's not tuned by Lido. So, he's not fastest.

XCal2 is the way to go IMO...got mine from Brenspeed, couldn't be happier. Very competitive pricing too if that's what you want to compare. And they're a "Top 20 Tuner" according to SCT. I got the 87, 91, and 93 tunes. Their specialty is the 93 tune, and I HIGHLY recommend it.

I've seen everything from 85 to 93 octane. You get three generic tunes, 87, 91 and 93 octane. Retuning takes less time than it takes to fill up at the pump so you can easily adjust your tune to the gas you have available. I do this regularly, like when I'm doing a road trip I'll use 87 but when I want to play I'll get what's available, usually 91 and just retune while I'm filling up.

If you don't have 93 in your area, you might ask your tuner for the 87, 91 and a more radical 91 tune. They can set your car to shift harder if it's an auto, or get more aggressive with timing, etc.

If you don't have 93 gas in your area get a tune for the highest octane available. As far as the "who's the best tuner" argument, everybody thinks their tuner is the best. The truth is the top guys are all good, go for best support and price. Doug at Bamachips is a good guy and takes good care of his customers. Stick with the X-cal though imo.

LX200 as you can see i said NA and on the site. I do get your point but my vote still goes to Alternative.. until proven otherwise.

2006Ride ..any of the major tuners (bamachips, VMP,evolution or alternative) will work just fine for you..just remember to stick with the xcal2 as Beaustang said. Gas ratings vary from place to place so get the highest octane posible and stick to a station that you can trust.

LX200
10-28-2006, 02:23 PM
That may be your vote until proven otherwise.... then say "I like my Alternative tune", NOT "Alternative is best for autos". Doing so is a disservice to members here who ask questions. You only know that your your car, with YOUR MODS, is the fastest car YOU KNOW ABOUT. The tune can't be separated from the mods, which can't be separated from the driver, which can't be separated from the ambient conditions, which can't be separated from the track conditions when the runs were made.

At the end of the day, you have no proof. Just anecdotal evidence. And we've been over this SOOOOOOOO many times....

I think I read this in 5.0, but I'm not 100% sure. There was an small article soliciting tuners to submit tunes for a tune-off in a future issue. This could be a great article if the response is good and if they include a category for the V6.

I think I have decided on Evolution performance. I guess the tunes I will get are, performance 87, performance 91, & torque 91. Does that sound right? Or maybe they can recommend a tune for me.

LX200
10-29-2006, 04:52 PM
Sounds good... I guess you will ask for the tunes for whatever CAI you are getting too.

yes i can, rygen is tuned by powerhouse and scrming is tuned by mrt :D

but then again, my mower is tuned by hondata, so they are obviously best. none of you can even claim to be able to hang with my 7 sec mower and that's on grass tires, no slicks here.

OWNED.
