I have some experience with a few brands and can say that if I were to do it once again, I may just buy some name branders because there is nothing worse than spending 700 dollars on some "cheap" tires and finding that they really don't perform very well. I will start this off with my list...

Acceptable:
Cooper Zeon

Not acceptable:
Yokohama ES100

I had bought some from Pep Boys some years ago and they would belong in the "not acceptable list", but I can't remember the name of them... I think that they were made by General.

All of these showed the high ratings for traction on the sidewall... The Yokohamas are so bad that I can, fairly easily, break the front end loose in a turn (and this is on a stang with a fine tuned aftermarket suspension). There is no cost savings on a tire that can make up for the repairs/injury from loosing control of a car... I am interested in hearing about what you guys have experienced.

I am actually looking only for opinions or just some experiences that can be learned from... for me as well as any that do a search on this topic later... By low profile I mean anything that fits the 17" rim in the 40 or 45 mm range (that being the most common size on the stang).

I also need to add that you don't always get what you pay for... there is expensive junk as well as decent cheap stuff out there, the trick is to be able to sort through all of the BS... and the BS I am talking about is brand name or endorsed items... I will say that by tossing out mega dollars out for something, a person is more likely to end up with a quality product... But that is not what I am after here...

I've never tried a 45mm tire, I like the wider tires, personally. At least 245mm, if not more.

Anyway, for 245-45/17's, I have Dayton Daytona's and they are better than the factory Goodyears, but that really doesn't say a whole lot. I paid $350 mounted and balanced from a local Tires Plus. They were deeply discounted because they were 'last year's model.'

I have a set of 245-50/16 Falken Ziex tires on my '71. I bought them with a set of rims, but I think they'd be around $450 mounted and balanced from Big O. They have good lateral traction, and smell good when the go pedal is hit hard. They seem to stick fairly well considering the task they have to put up with.

The 45mm I am talking about is the side wall (hight)... aka low-profile... And yes, 245 width is the minimum that I would accept on a Mustang as well... (the Yokahamas I mentioned were Z-rated 275 45-17s by the way)...

Thanks for posting. Hope there will be more good info...

OOPS again... I am typoing like mad lately... and not that it is important, but the Yokahamas are 275 40 ZR17s.

That 45 or 40 isn't in mm. It's the aspect ratio, a percentage. A 245/45 has a sidwall height that is 45% of the width (245), or about 110mm. A 275/40 has a sidewall height of 110mm, which is why these two can be interchanged without having to worry about the speedo.

Im gonna be buying the cheapest tires possible coem spring time.

Ive been on MT's on my rear for so long, i forget what its like to punch it in 2nd gear and get loose :(

Im leaning toward the Sumitomo 245/45's...

anyone know of anything that may be cheaper?

i personally go with either goodyear, bfgoodrich, nitto or mickey thompson. from what i experienced, i cannot stand bridgestone or michellin.

275/40/17 is my favorite   just a thought.

I bought a set of cheap Falken brand tires to replace the original Goodyears on my '02GT & IMO they're GREAT!! For the money, they grip pretty good & are wearing nice & evenly, WAAAYYYY better than the POS Goodyears the car came with

I have had great luck with Khumo tires on a bunch of muscle cars as well as a few rice burners.  You can also check out second line tires like Remington, which is Dunlops less expensive brand.  Typically you will find the same tread patterns, sizes and ratings on the second line stuff for a lot less money.
