’83 GT: TRX Tires, clutch
 

Okay, so I just came into this '83 GT free of charge. It runs surprisingly well given the age and the fact that it's been sitting for nearly a year without being driven. I siphoned the old gas, put in new, checked fluids ... and she started right up.



So, I've got a couple basic questions about the car. Searching the forums didn't turn up any answers.



1) The car has the funky TRX wheels/tires on it. 220/55R390 is the size. TireRack.com only lists the Michelin TRX tire in this size, at $200 each! Yikes. Is this the only size that'll fit, or is there a non-metric equivalent that fits on this rim?



2) The clutch engages at the *very* top of the pedal travel. Too much gas from a stop causes excessive clutch slippage. Is there an adjustment on the pedal to allow for more travel, or does this simply indicate that the clutch is at the end of its life? The clutch holds well once engaged (WOT in any gear, the clutch holds without slipping).



3) The car doesn't have dual exhaust stock. I'd imagine (although I've not gotten underneath to look) that this is due to some interference with plumbing dual exhaust from the engine. Could it be that the answer is that it's as simple as buying some headers and an exhaust system and it'll bolt right up?

Thats the retarded rim size year! Either get new rims or check with firestone I think they make the only availabe non metric size for that wheel

I don't see why. Heck, go to a local run shop and get duals hooked up. You can generally get a nice job done fairly cheap.

Woa....am I reading that right? 390 inch rims?

Yeah, that's the right size. From what I've been able to gather, the TRX wheels are the Betamax of tires. Some funky idea Michelin had that didn't take off. The 390 is actually in millimeters ... and figures to 15.354" rims.



Looks like the '85-'86 ten-hole 15" wheels go for cheap on ebay, guess I'll pick up a set of those.

Well I have a 83 gt. It is not a bad car after a few mods. First get rid of the TRX. tires. a replacenemt tire will cost $200+ each. You can find a set of standard 4 lugs cheap at just about anywhere. As for the exhaust, the Y pipe config. suck. You can get a H or X pipe for around $150. While you are at it you can upgrade headers: if you are cheap the newer stand around 90's have shorties but are restrictive. Check

E-bay. If you need anything else just ring.

I also used to own an 83 GT. I really enjoyed the car and also had a similiar problem with the TRX tires untill I was able to buy a friends "rolled" 83 Capri 5.0

for 200$. It had 3 brand new TRX's on it and I parted out the rest of the car. I agree though, in the long run get rid of those metric wheels!!!
